That was still during the streak, though. If they faced at Wrestlemania it would have been an automatic Sting loss. Sting was and still is fine with that match. They turned heel as The Blade Runners (Rock and Sting) shortly after. Then they went to Bill Watt's Mid-South (what later turned into UWF). They split up and Hellwig went to Fritz Von Erich's WCCW where he renamed himself The Dingo Warrior, while Sting continued on in UWF. Dingo Warrior then went to the WWF where he became The Ultimate Warrior and Sting stayed in UWF when it was then bought out by Jim Crockett's JCP but called NWA. When it comes to Sting and his evolving into the "Crow" character, I think that the filter of time has really not reflected just how big he was in the lead up to Starrcade 1997. I mean, there was NOTHING hotter. And this was during the infancy of the internet, but Sting would show up on screen and it was, if you were the right age, GOOSEBUMPS and like a real life superhero. Undertaker (especially his return at Wrestlemania 20) had the same aura about him. I think that's why fans paired them. The only wrestling story, in recent memory, that was on the scale of Sting v. Hogan, that I could think of, was Cody v. Roman at Wrestlemania 39. In addition, I don't feel its acknowledged enough that Sting got so huge with just his body language and his sheer charismatic presence. I can't think of a talent that could get so "over" without saying a single word for a WHOLE YEAR. Much like The Undertaker himself, Sting really was a once in a generation.

If it wasn’t mentioned, Sting was never in World Class Championship Wrestling with Mark or da Ultimate/Dingo Warrior. He was in Mid-South, wrestling with Dingo Warrior (then called “Rock”), as one half of the Bladerunners, managed by “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert back in late ‘85. Sting remained throughout the company’s tenure until it changed to UWF and when the company was bought out (or top talent purged by) to NWA/WCW. I remember those years vividly

Sting and Warrior - The Blade Runners started with Mid South, then got bought by NWA turned into WCW. TNA then AEW. Sting worked on his craft from beginner to Legend

Sting and Undertaker are my all time favorites. As much as I would've loved to see that match the only real satisfactory ending to it would have to be a draw with mutual respect and admiration (and probably some form of "supernatural" air to it using rafters, under ring/facility passages etc for each at a couple points during the match).

Little unknown Fact: But the Taker v Sting match technically did happen. But, this was before Surfer Sting was Crow Sting, and before Mean Marc was The Undertaker. P.S. I think Vince's mindset was "What If" is better than "That wasn't as good as I wanted it to be", and in Theatre the saying always goes "keep the audience wanting more".

Sting had to change his facepaint with the Crow character in the beginning. James O'barr, creator of the Crow told him..man, this is my character your doing yourself up like. Steve didn't have to do a lot,but he did have to tweak the paint

We need sting as a guest on this show!! I wish sting and taker could’ve had that match at 31!! Nobody would’ve expected them to go out and give us a 5 star classic. even in their prime they wouldn’t have a 5 star classic match! It wasn’t about the match it was about the story just seeing them 2 in the same ring face to face would’ve been epic!!!

I love how fan centric Taker is. Great work comes from individuals putting aside ego and collaborating to create a better product. I'm questioning without Taker would the WWE be what it is today?

A face to face in the royal rumble is really all we need. It would be easy for both guys. Its not so much the match people want but the story they could create.

The incredible amount of respect Taker has for Sting is evident in how he's speaking of him and his career. It's also refreshing to see how apolitical he is when it comes to companies too. The man respects talent wherever it's found.

Yep, Sting was in Mid-South as one of the Blade Runners with Ultimate Warrior

Sting versus Undertaker is the biggest omission in wrestling history. He's being polite because Vince is his friend. Vince didn't give a shit about having steam. He just didn't want WCW to have him and he definitely didn't want that match because he feared that it would make Sting bigger and if he left again he would be sending heat over to the competition. That's why the Mansion never happened. It was Vince's ego bottom line

Sting is bigger than WCW or WWE. He didn't need the big company to seal his legacy. He's THE icon.

I watch both :) WWF when I was a kid then WWE and a little WCW. Then WWE and eventually mostly just NXT and then AEW mainly. Now back to WWE with PL running the story. So ya, in the middle just looking out for good wrestling shows mainly. Loved Sting's run and his retirement and also what was done for Muta. Very cool.

Sting and Warrior actually got their start tagging in Mid-South Championship Wrestling, as Rock and Flash managed by Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert, not in Dallas' WCCW where Taker got his start. Flash's name actually was changed to Sting shortly thereafter, for whatever reason (D.C. comics copyrights maybe?) Warrior left after about a year stint in the company and bolted for Dallas where he took on the moniker of the Dingo Warrior, around the time that Taker was breaking into the business, in Dallas, as the Punisher.

6:20 “I could walk out there and shuck&jive and smoke&mirror it and make people feel like they saw something… but that’s just not right.” The man just described the industry at its core after just claiming to throw the best punch in the business. Taker is amazing. He’s right AND he’s also right. It’s been an amazing time to have lived through the Monday Night Wars and then to see these two icons (crowd favorites and 2 of my all time top workers) respectfully retire (I made sure I was at Sting’s retirement match/show) but then to also have the chance to see Mark talk about the business out of character… it’s humbling that such an icon will break down the business and give us insight through his life. He is The American Badass!
