Most Americans are not paying attention to this area of the world. I would bet 9 out of 10 of them couldn’t point out Iran on a blank map. They will start paying attention if gas shoots to over $10 a gallon overnight. That’s when people will start asking a LOT of questions. A war with Iran would be an extremely hard sell. A regime change in Iran would require US boots on the ground. Being a realist, I’m not sure the American public would stomach it after the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The idea of losing soldiers daily and spending $$$ nation building isn’t on the Average Joe Citizen’s to do list. This is assuming regime change and nation building was the objective. I could see other scenarios where the US engagement is more limited. But even there, I still think there may be some challenges.
