I think instead of constantly talking about racism, we should talk in broader terms about prejudice, which is simply judging someone or something based on limited information. Prejudice is necessary for our individual survival, and you'll NEVER eliminate it, nor should we try. The key is getting more information and assimilating it to refine our opinion, and then judging fairly based on sufficient information. This is what happens on a job interview for example--you might make assumptions about someone when they walk in the door, but it's only through a quality discussion that you determine who they really are. I had never heard of Zuby before listening to this podcast, but I can say, the least interesting thing about him is that he's black, and that's because I listened to him speak for an hour.

@peterlee34674 жыл бұрын
Yang is just towing the party line temporarily. MAny of his friends/supporters who helped him leunch his run last year still support him, while they personally hate CNN and the DNC, they say they understand Yang is playing the long game so he doesn't get the Ron Paul/Tulsi Gabbard treatment. Even Marianne Williamson was was so anti-establishment was a guest on Yang Speaks last week and she pressed Yang on him being part of "the cool kids table" now while both of them were in the same boat in early 2019. She's the only one of the far left/Bernie faction of the left who has compassion for YAng and doesn't blame him for doing what he's doing thes days...but she also thinks Yang is being naive if he thinks there is any hope for the democratic party. Yang in response, simply was kind of silent, he didn't even tell her he disagreed with her. And Matt, Yang's online campaign editor, said he is an independent who will probably vote Trump. YAng's main campaign manager, Zack, has consistently encouraged Yang's supporters to keep supporting him for a 2024 run, which shows they are secretly hoping Trump wins.

She was not too long ago completely caught up in Trump derangement. That also doesn't fit with an enlightened person. A truly spiritual minded person could dislike Trump, oppose Trump, work full throatily against him, but would not resort to the simplistic rhetoric of calling him a fascist or an existential threat. 1:05:29 Small point, but if it's the Football Lads that Zuby is referring to here, they weren't actually doing Nazi salutes at the statue protests. This was something that was cooked up based on the fact that there was a photograph taken from a side angle that showed some of them raising their arms above their heads while they did football chants. I believe that someone even went as far as to take audio from an old march featuring the actual far-right and laid it over the footage to try and cement the narrative that these people were fascists. There may well be all sorts of good reasons to criticise the Football Lads and similar groups, but being neo-Nazis is not one of them. It's just slightly irritating because many conservative commentators also bought into this idea, and whenever I hear it repeated it kind of demonstrates how easily false narratives can be successfully deployed.

Don’t worry we have a spare Portland LMFAO. I miss the non crazy liberals they knew how to laugh. This polarization is crazy any system needs balance to function. The conservatives make it run and the liberals to bring them in line when they move too far off center. Similarly liberals tend to be creative and come up with new ways of doing things and conservatives call them out when the concept or policy is too far out. If I described myself it would be small C conservative but more liberal for social nets. We need a multitude of ideas and ways of thinking as that is the way our society has moved forward. We’ve made our mistakes but by in large we work to improvement for everyone. Making everyone have the opportunity to be their best self is only beneficial to society as a whole

23:00 The false idea at the center of all of that thinking is to assume that that $99 billion dollars would have otherwise been available to anyone without him operating business the particular way he has. That money wasn’t going to fall out of the sky for the greater good simply because people willed it so. Those sort of ridiculous analogies or comparisons are absolutely nonsensical. And if people disagree with someone obtaining gross amounts of wealth and gaming against competitors then it’s not the individuals but the rules of the system that need managing.

That's true. That makes the same sense as AOC thinking the NY/amazon tax breaks would be available to use for the poor. And also it's not a zero sum game. Some productivity is achieved with a 40 hour week and some can be achieved with minimal effort. It won’t be okay for most people. I know human nature too well. Things would have changed on my end for the better by now. Unfortunately my own life seems to be highly correlated with the reality all of us face here. It could just be extremely coincidental over decades, but I don’t think so. If people like myself who were already struggling are dying off rapidly and the best of character are dying off while more and more insane people join together ... eh it’s gone on too long and there’s far too much potential for horror from here out. The class war is the worst war. I didn’t ever have a chance. I had to spend most of my life confined to a bed being abused by my parents. Up til I was 30 I didn’t even get to live anywhere else. Been to the depths of hell from my own body’s pain. Pain that took away my feeling of anything good at all. Then I survived through it all... off and on painkillers and so on... got off everything that they put me on... stayed off... did everything right... fight as hard as I could for so long... painkillers and that fight is nothing comparative to everything else. That was like 20 years ago. endless shit I’d have to say endless books of lives I’ve lived for what... it’s all useless and was all for nothing. Especially when every moment is pain. And pain I figured out. Not one moment did I have to life this way, but they forced me. I only lived in the truth and had the best morals because that’s all I have of value. For what? I survived through everything learning more than many do by simply surviving and continuity no survive and utilizing what I could. This game never ends. And it’s a horrible game. It could have been very different. It could have been amazing. I knew all the math since I was a small child and understood it well. I was just held back completely by things I never should have been living with, period. Especially to die this way with zero coming from it and being tortured to the very end. It never had to be this way. There will never be any connecting to anyone like me and that’s that.

As much as I love Bret, I really hate his misunderstanding (and most people's misunderstanding) of something like the Besos fortune. It's not liquid. It's not just cash you can somehow redistribute. It's literally an appraisal of his share of companies. His company is also adding value to the mix. They aren't just sitting behind a desk and collecting the cream. If people want a share of that they can literally buy it on the stock market. I do agree that governments shouldn't be giving special favors to Goliath, but Amazon is not a monopoly. Amazon has a real absolute advantage when it comes to economies of scale in a few different sectors, but their model literally says "come in and compete with us." Now if it were found that Amazon was not competing fairly and was deranking sellers on their marketplace to push their own goods, then that would be a problem. We're not talking oil or utilities; we're talking about a digital marketplace. With no real physical monopoly there really isn't one. People can choose to go elsewhere even if Amazon might be one of the paths of least resistance. That's a powerful force, but not a monopoly. I also disagree with Bret's assertion that Amazon is working on such a low margin to drive competition out. Really I think it has to do with Amazon finding a more efficient method with an economic tradeoff. With no retail overhead they can sell at a lower price, but people have to trust the product without seeing it in person. If nobody trusts Amazon or its sellers, nobody is going to buy there and Amazon will lose its market share. Part of the value of their service is making sure their customers get what they pay for. I've told this to several people that are thinking of starting a business; you are either a service business or a convenience store, or a mix. The big box store is dead. The corner store will always be alive and well because some people will value convenience over the best price.

The left continually conflates wealth with resources, too. As if Jeff's fortune exists because a bunch of people don't have the dollars he's holding onto under his giant mattress. That's not how it works, and if you look at the value & employment Bezos ADDS to the nation, it vastly, utterly outstrips his personal wealth on orders of magnitude...to include taxes collected. The left just doesn't want to see economics for what they are, instead of what they want them to be.

@@swingset1969 all high earning individuals pay Alternative Minimum Tax. There are ways to personally benefit from company amenities, and I think this is usually part of what people actually complain about. There are lots of federal, state, and local rules around those things, and they change regularly. It is also striking that the most hated minority of all is the wealthy and that these critical theorists don't realize they are the oppressors in that relationship.

Why was the playing field tilted in Jeff's favor in the first place? Anti trust is always trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Prevent the escape in the first place by massively cutting barriers to entry, namely tax favoritism, regulation and the regulatory capture that necessarily follows, and general bureaucracy.

Bret hits the nail on the head with the problem with wealth inequality. Wealth gives people opportunity, power and influence so having it so unevenly distributed will inevitably result in an oligarchy where the rich exploit the poor.

PS - it's 'semi-weekly' which means twice per week (which is how often Bret and Heather do DarkHorse Podcast). Every 'half-week' is what it's suggesting, like a semi-circle (half circle). 'Bi-weekly' means every two weeks. Nerd alert.
@chrisfazio99344 жыл бұрын
Actually .... unfortunately, “bi-weekly” has come to be accepted as meaning both “once every two weeks” AND “twice a week.” The ambiguity and potential for consequential miscommunication is a travesty, and I’m afraid that “bi-weekly” has become unusable as a result.
@chrisfazio99344 жыл бұрын
Oh, and allow me to chime back in and say that my intuitions are in line with yours on how the word should be used. Until we write the dictionaries and pedantically enforce their contents with an iron fist, I shall reluctantly opt for the clumsy “twice weekly” and “once every two weeks” when amongst laypeople, and “once fortnightly” when speaking with nerds.

But Brett somehow reducing the amount or rate a Billionaire earns per achievement may not matter because they all typically stay just as driven if not more to earn once they're Big Men, rather it's the ability to more easily take on Rent Seeking behaviors to continue earning once they have enough Capital. Reducing what they first earn will merely relatively have them using what will also become a higher valued Currency to still go straight into Rent Seeking

The difference is when people see that someone like Jeff Bezos pays a fraction of a cent on the dollar in tax, whilst ordinary people pay 30%, that's where the outrage on inequality comes forth. People who can game the system to others' detriment are going to elicit the well-founded belief that society is stacked against the common person and poor people in particular.

Bret also seems to make up entirely his own definitions for "Patriotism" and "nationalism" seemingly out of thin air and presumably to fit his world view. It is ironic that he chastised Nationalism while later indicating the need for America to stay front and center on the world stage if at a minimum ad a defense against less stellar actors from taking its place yet the only way for any nation to stay front and center on the world stage is through Nationalism. I like a lot of what Bret says but in nearly ever segment I've seen him do he displays a distinct set of biases toward the national identity and the defense there of. He will promote conservation of reasonable power and the tools that encourage stability and then denounce the tools themselves. Bret seems to live on a world where he isn't self aware enough to see his hypocrisy in this regards or perhaps he like many other intellectuals seem to think higher of human nature than they aught to and thus negate it along with the distasteful things societies must do to deal with it. I'm really quite tired of intellectuals with massive intellects lacking worldly experience and then spouting off about how we should be as if they got their play book from a Gene Roddenberry setting.

Thanks for articulating this! 💯 He is guiltier of this than his brother and I think it has a lot to do with thinking better of humanity than it altogether deserves. I think it is symptomatic of former progressives who can rightly call out their left wing fellows but cannot bear to place themselves as “right” as is appropriate for the crisis we find ourselves in. They see fully well that voting for Biden is pure madness but still virtue signal by saying they will not voting for Trump as if it is a valid third option. It’s clearly not!

I agree. I'm not going to waste my vote on a third party in this election. Trump, with all his foibles, is the only thing standing between us and having critical race theory crammed down our throats. The Democrats are doubling down on stupid--namely Affirmative Action--a policy which never should have been allowed because it's not color blind. I want a color blind society, and we're within a gnat's ass of being there now, but the Left will never admit it.

I agree with what you're saying but I don't think it's a big problem. No one person can have all the answers. He speaks based on his idea of "utopia". That's not happening in our government right now but I guess that's my utopia speak coming out 😝😆

The discussion about wealth distribution and Bezos' incentivization depends on Bret's fantasy that he can better calculate the proper marginal incentive better than the market. @Bob Charles Society doesn't need a plethora of Bezos-like unicorns to justify the argument for increasing the marginal number of geniuses or even the number of basic reliable citizens contributing to that society. I just don't see the pros outweighing the cons for any active redistributive intervention once minimal childhood health and basic equality under the law are guaranteed. Populations that understand and value the benefits to themselves for merit based employment and early and continued education will quickly replace those that don't. It is a condescending and false belief that people can't come to that understanding voluntarily. Progressives don't need the state to enforce this understanding. They do need the state to enforce all their less obvious "good ideas" (cunning plans).

I think Bret nailed it. The left has been deaf to the unintended consequences of its overly enthusiastic social policies (Thomas Sowell's Discrimination and Disparities is full of examples) and the right has promoted a false story that things are better than they are. Police are basically functioning as quasi social workers dealing with the mental health crisis. This is not a good solution. The exact same thing is happening up here in Canada.

I'm not religious, (actually an Atheist) but even I can see that Christianity eventually revealed to people the inherent contradiction of the message "all people are created equal" with things like slavery and racial oppression. It was inevitable that the contradiction would initiate change. To remove the fundamental basis of law, public governance and societal values in favour of a Marxist/Anarchist failed experiment is the "end of days". To quote the Bible.
