ancient 1,500-year-old poetry from the British Isles, a time when 'Old Welsh' or Cumbric was the common language of the peoples living in what is now Northern England and Southern/Central Scotland. Cumbric was a form of 'Common Brittonic', the language spoken by ancient Britons, and from which modern Welsh or Cymraeg has evolved. This poem is an arrangement of 'Urien Erechwydd' by Taliesin, a praise poem to King Urien of Rheged who ruled a pre-medieval kingdom centred around the Solway Firth in the sixth century AD. Urien's reign is generally viewed as a golden era for the Britons of Yr Hen Ogledd (the Old North). Under his rule, Rheged perhaps stretched from Ayrshire in modern Scotland to North Yorkshire in England. Taliesin is often referred to as Taliesin Ben Beirdd ("Taliesin, Chief of Bards" or chief of poets). He is believed to have served at the court of three Brythonic Kings.

Please, do not forget that Galice and Asturias from Spain are Celtic, too. So Brittany, which I knew 2 years ago (Landivisiau, Quimper, Roscof, Plougar...) is one of the EIGHT Celtic Nations. Greetings from this Celtic soul and heart.

Lol, what's this hardon for Celtic culture some peopel have? I can understand if you are from places like Ireland or ones where the culture and language are still super close and you want to preserve it........but there's something weird about many of these movements of people trying to reconnect with PARTICULAR roots of theirs. I notice how selective it is...specially in Europe where there have been LOADS of different influences for any given country. Btw, you can add Northern Portugal to that list.

Greetings from the Hen Ogledd (OldNorth) What people forget the Cumbric Brythonic was also spoken in Northern England way into Yorkshire long after the so-called Saxon Invasion of 450AD. in fact, there was a number of Brythonic Kingdoms slap bank in the heart of England there was the Strathclyde Britons the Brythonic Kingdon of Elmet in Yorkshire and the Brythonic Kingdom Of Gododdin. Plus the Brythonic Kingdom of Rheged in Cumbria.

The Battle of Catraeth was fought around AD 600 between a force raised by the Gododdin, a Brythonic people of the Hen Ogledd or "Old North" of Britain, and the Angles of Bernicia and Deira. It was evidently an assault by the Gododdin party on the Angle stronghold of Catraeth, perhaps Catterick, North Yorkshire. The Gododdin force was said to have consisted of warriors from all over the Hen Ogledd, and even some from as far afield as Gwynedd in North Wales and Pictland. The battle was disastrous for the Britons, who were nearly all killed. The slain warriors were commemorated in the important early poem Y Gododdin, attributed to Aneirin. In early historical times, this part of northern England and southern Scotland was the territory of the Votadini, the ancestors of the later Gododdin. By 600 the Angles had formed the important kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia, which were possibly originally ruled by Britons.[citation needed] As such the Battle of Catraeth may have been an attempt to push back Anglo-Saxon expansion. At some time after the battle, the Angles absorbed[citation needed] the Gododdin kingdom and incorporated its territory into the kingdom of Northumbria.

The Breton language is derived from the Gaelic language. There are many similarities between these two languages. Breton is an Indo-European language spoken for over 1500 years. This is a Celtic language specific to Brittany whose first written back to the ninth century.

You take a history lesson. No such thing as "Celtic" existed in the time you are talking about. The term is attributed to an 18th Century Welsh romanticist, ie it's Manufactured. There is no such thing as "Celtic" DNA. The 'Welsh' Language is derived from Brythonic, the original language for most of the Island of Britain covering what is now Scot, Eng, Wales. Gaelic is a separate language from a separate people. Historical writings have shown this to be the case. So who usurped who first?
