When I went thru public education for 12 years, not a single teacher I had ever expressed their political or sexual beliefs on me and that’s the way it should be. Students should have no idea what their teacher’s personal beliefs are regarding politics or sexual preference.

As long as you don’t make it a big deal it’s fine. In 6th and 7th grade I had a lesbian teacher who wasn’t loud about it but she just casually said in conversation something about her gf/wife and the class just moved on And in high school I had a conservative teacher who voted for Trump but we didn’t know until we found his Facebook page but he kept it out of the class

I would love to hear your perspective on if you think that parents can understand the content well enough to determine which standards should be taught in school. As a conservative teacher, I support parents and agree that parents should have voice and power in their children’s education. I believe that they are the best advocates for their children. But I hesitate on the idea that parents should determine curriculum. Less than half of my students’ parents have high school diplomas, a significant number are illiterate-how can we leave them with the responsibility of determining curriculum? I would live your perspective…

@@juliekennedy9891 I appreciate the genuine manner in which you presented that question. I honestly believe if parents are truly dissatisfied with the public education experience they should make the necessary sacrifices to homeschool. At a last resort for those who absolutely can't, I advocate for school choice for this reason. I believe that it forces the market to improve and the schools who don't wanna lose money due to low enrollment will have to improve and appropriate their funds better to attract the trust of parents. This allows parents to go to where they feel comfortable for their education needs. You should look into the Arizona school choice program as a model if you aren't familiar. We literally have the best school choice program in the country and I truly believe that the monopoly on education for the less fortunate families allows a complacency in the public school system. They need more accountability and nothing accomplishes that like the effects of school choice. It'll expose the good schools and bad schools and reveal why and where our schools need to improve to stay open. The argument that poor kids can't get there is mute because in Arizona they are bussing these kids across city lines. Teachers unions fight against it to maintain power and our children should never be allowed to be viewed as a paycheck to our education system.

Homeschooling needs to be regulated so that the students can benefit from the best possible scenario. Homeschooling can be superb and it can be awful. I was a child with abusive parents, and I needed public education. Not for the education, but as a way to escape what I was going through at home. At one point I was moved to a charter, because the school I was attending knew what was happening in the home. Although CPS never got involved at least I could feel safe for a portion of my day at school. Now that I’m an adult and a mom of 2 girls, I also know the importance of being involved with the PA/PTA.

In 8th grade my living situation changed and I found out the morning of that I had to move and I only had an hour to say goodbyes, it was all my teachers I went to without hesitation. My time was limited and I didn't say goodbye to a single friend because it was my teachers who made me feel seen and cared for. I did too, but I struggled with English. So I had to go to public school around middle school. I had a history teacher in high school that just let me teach. Because his only lesson he had to teach for the year was the american Civil War. Was great, I got to teach American history in a week that was supposed to be a month and I taught even European involvement in the American Civil War which my teacher didn't know. English teacher absolutely loved me said my reading level was far above my peers. While they struggled to read the odyssey, I read the odyssey and the iliad.. so me and her had great conversations about literature. I also let her know that America may note edger Allen poe as a poet, to the rest of the world he is a romance novelist.

@@kimodoms5154hank you so much. I try to do the same. I’ve been teaching for 8 years and you’re right, it is very difficult to remain motivated. Right now, because my wife is bed ridden due to injuries from a car wreck 2 weeks ago and a complicated delivery 20 months ago, I am having to be the everything for her and my 8 children. I am not earning enough to live without debt for the first time in my career. And I have realized that I will never earn enough if I remain in the public schools. This school year is the first time that I have ever lived above my means and we haven’t changed anything in our spending habits besides cutting back as far as we can. Because of this, I have initiated my exit strategy of creating a tutoring business with a colleague with the hopes of that becoming primary income eventually. I’m not trying to discourage anyone, but realize this, my wife has been a stay at home mother since I graduated from college and I have been able to stay debt free until recently in California. I just want to be able to provide more for my family and this (teaching public school) isn’t doing enough for them. Building a business that could eventually give them the future I want for them does.

Right. I had the suggestion to get them into community gatherings so they can socialize with other people but around people they their parents want them around. One that is very common and most accessible is church. Sure doesn’t have to be for religion but its usually comprised of people who have good morals and common sense beliefs. Usually people who live in the real world and Christian’s usually know that not everyone is religious so they know how to tolerate different beliefs without throwing a tantrum. Other activities in communities as well but church is the best one to kinda give a quick idea of what could be useful.

I was homeschooled until my highschool years, since my parents and I decided a change of pace would be healthy (and that God wanted me there). The first year-and-a-half were actually pretty great. I knew 100% my school was liberal, yet I never felt like I was being indoctrinated to the degree we see today. Even the actual education stuck with me and has left an impact on my life. Second semester sophomore year, Covid hit and I spent that and my whole Junior year home. That’s when I realized that, when not surrounded by friends and the few teachers I genuinely had good friendships with, the system had insane cracks. My physics teacher didn’t know the work, the Spanish teacher rushed everything and I had to drop it halfway through Junior year just so I wouldn’t fail, and the choir, English, and art teachers exposed their wokeism. Even the assistant US History teacher began talking about how everyone is racist (upon which I rebutted saying I don’t understand how everyone can be racist while not harboring evil intent on any other race, to which my actual teacher said, “It’s more like everyone makes certain light judgements on everyone upon first interaction, to which I say “duh!”). ANYWAY, all that to say I’m happy to have graduated unscathed in 2022, and am able to think for myself with all the good values that my parents and the Bible planted in me! :) Thanks for talking about this issue!

It was a favorite class of mine and has inspired me to promote critical thinking and healthy debate to this day. I am an elementary school teacher and I wholeheartedly agree that parents need to be a part of their child’s education. I honestly think that the lack of parent involvement is the biggest issue there is. The students with horrible parents are the same kids who turn out to be massive behavior issues and distractions in class. The students with two parents at home that are deeply invested in them are the students who will succeed and excel. That being said, if my student was placed in those two teachers classes, I would request a change.

The rest of it was pointless, and I have succeeded in a trade, and none of that was in the curriculum. In fact teachers only encourage academic success, never anything else. I actually stood my ground when she tried to get me to comply, I don’t think she was expecting resistance because so many people my age just do what they’re told. Tbh, that’s their school rules. Your opinion as a student did not matter to them. It’s an opinion. You went to that school as an optional action. You had no power unless the rest of the school students backed you up. Public school isn’t made for smart common sense education. It’s education on beliefs. You learn more from self teaching. It’s a battle out there especially against the staff. I had very different briefs, humor and generally the opposite from all my teachers. They hated me so much but they didn’t shut me up despite my best efforts. They never expletives someone who didn’t just give them respect. And they sure were not gonna earn it.

@@epgamer1145 Yeah, I was very polite up until that point. I never really trusted schools but that was the year that I found out why. I knew that there was no way that I could rally my fellow students because they’re all too passive, all I could do was hope I could be an example. I saw a few students follow in my footsteps but I never brought attention to them because I didn’t want them to get in trouble too, I did however point out the staff who didn’t follow the same rules that they would then yell at the students for not following. All things considered I went to a good school, it was newly built and I genuinely had some really good teachers. I found by talking to a lot of teachers that a lot of them (at my school) just genuinely like to teach. I brought up my thoughts of how the school system works and they would agree with me. It wasn’t until I started poking around the “higher ups,” the administration who self proclaimed their authority over others that I found an issue.

@@Abbey-Melon right. A lot of teachers would side with you but they would go against teacher guide lines and end up fired. In their shoes they rather keep their jobs and end up losing a student. Knowing that you will have better success in a different school. I got kicked out o g my school once for not being able to turn in work that the assignment wasn’t even taught so I couldn’t give an answer to the questions being asked. They actually pre determined they were gonna expel me after the first repeat but that was more so a problem with the teachers. That was a closed community though so everyone knew everyone. Work quickly got around that I was saying the teachers were not Teaching us properly. It was so bad that we had to have dedicated days where it was just a whole period of working on one assignment it was so backed up. Kids there had no personal life because of how behind they were. This is suppose to be a highly rated private school to, a bit ironic. So all teachers knew it but they wouldn’t say anything. Despite it not really being against teacher guide lines, they cared more about what people thought about them than to actually officially address the situation and work to fix it. As I see it, them kicking me out was the best idea they ever had. I found way better schools down the line and they actually have a good system going. So even private schools have their down sides. It really depends on what kind of people are running it. The people here were more concerned about what others thought about them and the principle looked down to anyone like they were lesser than her even dismissing my parents concerns on how the school is being ran. That isn’t something I see as being worthy of respect.

Watching this makes me realize how lucky I am to have the education system I’m in. K-12 with public school but in my Junior year of highschool, I started the IB Program and all of my teachers were very big on not letting their personal biases in but also recognizing all of the different view point. For example, my English teacher when going over grammar and pronouns mentioned that in traditional English, they was not used for a singular person but as time went by, using they to address one person become part of the vernacular. And today it can now be recognized as grammatically accurate but not in formal, traditional English. The same goes with my history teacher when it came to religion. We had an entire day where we talked about the rise of Christianity where we all got to discuss our own beliefs and learn about the other beliefs we have now and that were existing at the time. It was structured so I always had all the options and was never taught one or the other and I will forever appreciate it because I learned how to form my own opinions.

I don't think it is very professional or appropriate to wear makeup if you are a male teacher, especially when you are teaching children. If you disagree that is perfectly fine. If he wants to wear makeup or dress a certain way I think he should find another profession. When you have this increasing culture of teachers taking advantage of their position to groom children and hide specific topics that are being taught to kids from their parents it really makes it difficult to trust educators. Particularly, when they are presenting and acting like they participate in the said culture it makes it very hard to trust them.

@@kbeezyk the problem begins with you thinking that a male can’t wear make up. That is your believe and not the truth. Make up does not harm anyone at all. Can’t you see the real problem? I know a lot of male teachers that doesn’t wear a single drop of make up that aren’t worth a cent, but yeah let’s say that if you see a male teacher wearing make up is the worst fucking teacher in this earth.

I am a graduated high school student. First year in college now. I never liked the high school i went to for a multitude of reasons. The one that put me over the edge was this situation - We had an AMAZING history teacher. he taught all 3 different history classes and psychology. He was the ONLY teacher in that school that 1.) stuck up for students. 2.) taught unbiasedly and we were able to freely discuss and debate topics. 3.) fought for students against the board even if it meant risking his job. - Well ultimately this is what happened, but in the most unethical way possible. Our principle had come to him one day (he openly told his junior and senior classes about this incident) and had told him that the board would not hire him back, so he might as well turn his paper in to say he would not be returning for the next year. Mind you his next year would have been his tenure year, which i find laughably ironic. So he went ahead and went through with it since there were deadlines on such things. well it turns out, he went to the board himself to discuss and they never once said anything about this to the principle. So the basis of the story is that my principle used her power to overpower her staff into leaving the school and THEIR JOB because she did not like the way that he stuck up for students like a real teacher should. he left my junior year. the most heartbroken i’ve ever been. i longed for him every time i walked past his classroom. the education system is messed up and needs to be fixed. i know by the time i have kids it will be even more twisted than it is now and that scared me for the straight minded and delusional people of my generation.

I would NEVER condone teaching kids 6-10 years old about war atrocities across history, the blood, the gore, the impaling, the burnings at the stake, the inhumane treatment of others. Those kids are not ready for that! Those same kids are NOT READY to be introduced into sexual activity (even the most bland, conservative sexual activity). They are coming for our kids. Homeschooling a kid is a big commitment in time and it's a huge financial commitment because the parent doing the schooling can't work full-time usually so it's a big sacrifice. I was a public elementary school teacher for 24.5 years in a liberal state (I never saw any teacher teaching gender ideology, by the way) and am now retired. I could, and perhaps should write my experiences and insights into a book (I started but still need to finish.) I went to 13 different public, private, "alternative," and homeschooled schools. (I know; I traveled a lot growing up.) I was never a public school advocate; however, some of my perspectives changed while teaching because many students had very dysfunctional unhappy homes, and this institution, public school, was their only haven and continuity in their lives, and this brought me great responsibility as a teacher. I helped many students learn and have a place to go five days a week where they could hopefully thrive. Moreover, because public school is a routine where many children can feel safe and fed does not justify public schools' implementation of curricula and nearly insurmountable testing. It's a very complex problem. For many students, the public school creates much anxiety for children not at the level the school deems they should be. They often need to catch up in many areas due to their problems at home, which significantly impacts their learning. And unfortunately, a deep flaw of public schools is the inability to meet the child's needs. I had up to 36 students in my classroom (usually around 27 consistently), and it is impossible to meet all their needs, even with extra help, which is what homeschooling can give a child. My husband has taught homeschoolers outdoor education for 27 years, and these kids have a better education in most aspects and positive home lives than most of my experience with children in the school I taught. Again, there are many factors as to why. While as a child, I did not have consistency in the same school, my exposure to and experience with many types of schools and their inherent educational philosophies made me know there is no one way to learn or teach. And, for this, I feel grateful. It did not hinder me from getting into college and earning two degrees. If children come from a home where language, books, and exposure to the world are available, they can thrive. Socio-economics plays an essential role in this. Again, it's a complex issue.

When you said "they need to be playing in the dirt and eating a crayon" I felt that, because when I was in the early years of school I'd come in from dinner break covered in grass stains and then chow down on a crayon or sometimes even a gluestick 😂

I really didn't like school growing up but after seeing some of the teachers that are in the educational career right now I'm just appreciate my teachers I had more than I did before.. All the teachers I had are retired now but they were all overall amazing! They focused on basic academics! We were taught how to interact with others but that wasn't the main goal. We didn't talk about gender or sexuality and if the students mentioned anything related to that the teachers would literally "leave that conversation for when you go home it's not school appropriate" but that was with anything that wasn't school related not just sex and gender but anything! Like obviously there are stuff kids can talk about that isn't just school related but still there were limits. Sorry for my ramble I just want people to remember that there was a point where school was actually for what school is really meant for..

I COMPLETELY agree with you on individualized learning in a huge school. I often fell behind and suffered greatly throughout my ENTIRE school life. Guess what, the second I got a tutor, my grades went up SIGNIFICANTLY. I barely passed and I had to BEG teachers for help

I ended up in an “alternative school”… help building low income housing while getting HSED (a notch better than GED)… it was a great experience and a great time of my life! But definitely, super definitely not a normal school for normal kids. We were all crazy in our own way, got expelled from our original schools and every kid had a wild story! It was incredible and I was grateful the entire time 🤟😝

Always interesting to listen to school debates from other countries. I'm from Finland, and according to statistics we have one of the best educational systems in the world, and it's (almost) all public. I think kids SHOULD come after school with questions, imo it's the school's responsibility to give the kids the information to form their own opinion and ask questions. That said, the school/teachers shouldn't be ‘forcing’ or encouraging opinions but rather raising awareness of the questions. An example of how this could be brought up in say 7th grade (~12-year-olds) would be an assignment where the kids make a presentation about a political event or talking point and bring forward the pros and cons of both sides or a debate in class. This way it's also not only allowing the kids to form an opinion and interest themselves, but it's also teaching them debating, public speaking, and literature (researching and writing down talking points/creating the presentation). If you're only teaching your kids about YOUR beliefs and sheltering them from anyone with different beliefs you're only contributing to a society of segregation where people cannot be friends nor productively debate with people on the other side of the spectrum. Being able to show empathy and understand how other people think. There is always common ground to be found.

Private/Homeschooling sounds great on paper, but not every parent has the time or money to make those choices. It comes down to just having involved parents. I went to public school where certain 'agendas' were involved but my parents were involved and steered me down the right track. I've also seen kids that have been homeschooled or enrolled in private school and still get caught up, so its not a automatic problem solver.

If private or homeschooling is not feasible, I would say parents becoming involved in the public school system is absolutely the best route to take. Their voices need to be heard!!

At this point it's afford private school or afford homeschool and there is no other option unless you find a conservative bubble and the teachers are vetted.

I’m so incredibly grateful to my mom for homeschooling me and my three older brothers. I genuinely believe public school would’ve broken me. One of my brothers also likely has mild to moderate ADHD, and I have no doubt a public school would’ve slapped a label on him and attempted to medicate him. Instead, my mom was able to take the time to find a learning method that WORKED for him. He’s in his 30s now, highly musically gifted (thanks to my mom helping him hone in on that), successful in his career, and has a beautiful family.

I went to public school up until my first year of high school. Halfway through I switched to home school and that was a huge mistake. I ended up just dropping out completely because I was completely on my own aside from the occasional voice call from my teacher. My parents were never really the type to push me, and as a kid I loved it but as a newly twenty one year old who is extremely confused about the world, I wish I felt more prepared. I was always just kind of left to my own devices, but at the same time held to a standard that I don't think I could ever meet on my own. It was basically just me and grandma giving me rides to help me get my GED finally. Anyway sorry for the vent but seeing this video and you and all these parents passion about their kids really got me going emotionally. Anyone who sees this and becomes a future parent, or is in a similar situation where you feel alone, change something. I thought life would fix itself, and now I'm left with a mess to make my life out of.

From Pre-school into halfway of my 5th grade I was in a private school and I got the attention I needed. They saw I was lacking in reading so they put me into a certain room to better my reading skills and with that, I was able to catch up to my classmates. Then my family moved to another state and for 5th and 6th grade I was put into a public school that was just built and classes were smaller to where I had the same attention then. For 7th grade my family was moved again and I didn't get the attention I needed to be able to be on the same level with the other students for the rest of my school life. It wasn't that I was a bad reader it was more along the lines that I had anxiety when it came to reading out loud or people reading to me which made things difficult to focus on what I was supposed to be focused on and the private school saw that if I was alone in a quiet place my grades were much better. In my public high school I used to hide in the library to read during lunch before some classes so I could focus on what was to be learned that day.

As a kiwi, I'm gobsmacked that this conversation even needs to happen. When I grew up, I was in public school. There was no politics involved. I'm in highschool, politics sometimes came in, but we were never taught it, we were taught to find the information. In biology, we are doing an assessment on COVID-19 and the vaccine. Our teacher made it clear that we didn't have to abide by a certain narrative, and that we could even do the assessment on how vaccines are bad if we wanted to, as long as proper justification was issued. American schooling is so politicized because the country is politicized. You guys need to keep politics to a small part of your lives

i’ve gone to public school my entire life. and while i love my friends and have overall had pretty decent experiences, i can’t help but be skeptical of public school. going into 9th grade, the counselor would “interview” you with a parent to give you advice about high school. when my counselor asked me what core classes i’d be taking, i said english, math and history (all honors) and biology (for 9th grade you could either take earth science- which is like the easier basic class or biology which was more meant for 10th graders) she told me that i wouldn’t be able to handle it because it was too much work and that i shouldn’t even try. luckily, i did not listen to her. biology was one of my easiest classes, there was homework, but not 2 hours each day like she said there was. students are advised take the easiest route possible, but it sucks because it doesn’t provide a challenge!
