Hey everyone! The original draft for this video was over 40+ mins and gave a more rounded view of the industry, however after falling for a few supplement scams myself growing up, I decided to scope the video down as we are seeing the same problems occurring again and again. Ill likely do another video in the future because there are a few positive sides to the industry; there are some companies who are genuinely doing their best, some reliable supplements that have a positive (but small) effect and it has funded a lot of the fitness industry. Not to mention the placebo effect has its place. I personally use; protein powders, creatine, omega 3, a multi vitamin and caffeine regularly with a well formulated pre every now and again, this may help get that last 5% or so when it comes to nutritional success for body composition and is NOT necessary. While there are plenty of good brands out there, for those wandering I usually end up buying MyProtein and optimum nutrition products. I strongly recommend you use the resource; examine.com for researching supplements and then make sure the company uses third party testing. As always thanks for watching. 😄 Free guides: transform.brettjosh.com/josh-brett-links Follow Me for Extra Content: 📸Instagram: joshuwab_ - instagram.com/joshuwab_/ 🐔Twitter: Brettaljeni - twitter.com/Brettaljeni

If bugs and bacteria don’t want it that’s proof you shouldn’t either. It’s chemical digested animal parts and then all the good stuff removed so it can sit on a shelf for months. Try storing a raw egg for long. That’s good protein so you can’t.

This is why it’s so important for all of us in the fitness industry to have something called INTEGRITY, & never sell out by promoting supplements or bad products for quick financial gains. Nobody needs any supplements to achieve great gains in the gym. A healthy balanced diet that properly fuels your fitness goals combined with putting in a proper effort are the two main keys to success. 💪

No, promoting supplements is fine. What's not fine is making supplements with proprietary blends that hide the contents and promoting them as shortcuts. Real world has bills, bills need to be paid. I have no problems with an influencer marketing their supplement to make money, provided they are honest and push the importance of diet/sleep/exercise before their supplement.
@382u3uuej
@382u3uuej 2 жыл бұрын
@@Redditor6079 well arguing that it's ok because it makes money is not a good point to make, if fitness influencers want money they could sell programs, their coaching services or just take the ad revenue from their videos. Other than protein and creatine I see the vast majority of supplements as not worth the money, maybe there are some supplements out there that are useful like Ashwagandha but the vast majority of supplements being sold by influencers are things which are both overpriced and that you don't need. It also makes you lose credibility to sell worthless supplements, if I saw a fitness youtuber selling those things I wouldn't take his advice seriously since it's dishonest to suggest you need something like a 30 dollar pre-workout(any honest person would tell you to save your money and just drink coffe or buy the important ingredients individually and save money while also getting the correct dose instead of having it underdosed).

Josh Brett-You are remarkably ahead of the times at such a young age. It is really awesome to see. Your videos are well thought out and flow incredibly well. Keep up the great work. I am nobody special and hold no weight when it comes to a name or importance. I am a 48-year-old gym rat who has seen just about everything when it comes to supplements/marketing. The crap these companies and gloried natty roid heads are selling will never stop being pushed or marketed. The most important enzyme in all your videos is Mindfulness. You shine a spotlight on what many people may not take the time to notice. Keep up the magnificent work. We need you! The Fitness industry needs mindfulness like a fish needs water. The only difference is the fish knows it needs water to survive. The people buying these products, gym wear, gear, etc have no idea how bad they need mindfulness/awareness. Your videos do exactly that. If your video challenged even one young or old man or woman to actually research the ingredients or question why there ingesting a certain product, You have done your job. Eat right, exercise, and drink plenty of water. The secret has been out for hundreds of years. Keep your foot on the gas Mr. Brett. Another Job Well Done!

Supplements are exactly that, a Supplement to a complete and nutrient dense diet. As someone who uses AAS and competed in bodybuilding, 90% of supplements will give you the slightest of improvements. For a competitive athlete with a full wallet it makes sense. For the average gym goer it's complete waste of time. Another thing missed by people is bioavailability. So many supplements are not bioavailable unless taken in MASSIVE doses. Ensure you check bioavailability of your supplements and vitamins/minerals before making any purchases. Saying that the actual supplements I recommend are. 1. Quality Whey Isolate 2.Creatine 3. NAC 4. FISH OILS
@MathiasMartinWR
@MathiasMartinWR 7 ай бұрын
Do not supplement fish oils. Bad recomendation, look into rancidity problems with that industry. Do not supplement whey isolate. If you are taking these as supplements you're 'complete and nutrient dense' diet is not what you claim.That would include you're Essential PUFA's and AA's. Thats the most important part given they are essential and must come from diet. Either that or rephrase whey isolate as its own meal which everyone should try to prioritize whole food over powdered food if they are able to, its cheaper as well and frankly more convenient once you learn you can just bake a hunk of meat in the oven and it tastes great and lasts a couple days.

You don't need creatine and whey protein either. You're far better off getting protein from food, especially meat and eggs because alongside protein you get almost every micronutrient your body needs, while the ones added to whey powders are nowhere near as bioavailable. Creatine works but for me the effects are negligible so I don't see a point in spending money on it. Diet always beats supplementation.

@@papryk3102 you've just given an anecdote about why he doesn't need creatine. This whole video was about looking at supplements from an evidence based perspective. Yes diet, sleep and exercise are by far the most important things, but the evidence for creatine speaks for itself. I don't take whey because it only provides a benefit if you're deficient in protein (which in not). But to get 5g of creatine a day from diet would require eating about 2kg of meat everyday, hence why I take creatine. I don't need it, but it's got 50+ years of research which prove beyond doubt it gives a 5-10% boost in strength

Whats even crazier is the supplement industry somehow got around the usual scrutiny the FDA has towards drugs and food, basically as long as their products are labelled "correctly" then they can be sold to consumers with no accountability as to whether the product is safe, properly dosed, or as effective as claimed. Imagine if pharmaceutical companies had that same luxury.

The supplement industry really pisses me off. As a younger man in the military, supplements were a way of life. Think the gym bro attitude but taken to a whole new level. Imagine all the most annoying people at your local gym, but they live and work together. Everyone was taking 20 different supplements because half the guys they knew swore by them. So much money. The local businesses took advantage of the attitude, as did the official government stores on post. It was when I went on to become a biologist that I realized how useless most of these products are, and how the manufacturers twist scientific studies and language to push sales. Half the studies they cite are stuck behind journal paywalls anyways (so unavailable to the average person, like too much of science) and the results expressed in the marketing are almost always grossly overstated and over-extrapolated. The hardest part about trying to educate people on the truth is that the truth is complicated. Science is hard to convey often times, especially when the products (claim to) target complex biochemical pathways. Your average person isn't going to understand the details of enzyme kinetics or protein synthesis; why would they? They don't need to know that stuff. But the marketing is insanely effective in convincing people these products work without the details. People won't take you at your word when you tell them something is bunk, and I don't blame them. Especially when they have an emotional attachment to the product. But it's hard to change someone's mind when the facts require an undergraduate endocrinology course worth of knowledge to understand. Make friends with a biologist or doctor so they can walk you through the details and access pay-walled studies for you. And generally for fitness supplements: if you don't need a prescription for it, it probably isn't worth the money.

Thanks for putting your efforts into this subject! I'm a newly-certified personal trainer, and I advocate a very limited use of supplements. I actually believe in making your own pre-workouts using knowledge of basic ingredients and effective doses. It's not very difficult to do, and you get control over what you take. Yes, you still have to learn what works. And of course, even the "basic ingredients" need to come from good sources. The sad thing is that there are quality supplements out there. But the bad players cause problems for the honest sellers. I totally agree with the "late adopter" principle. Just repeat to yourself, "it doesn't matter how good this supplement sounds, if there are no human trials, don't use it." The worst thing of all is when knowledgeable fitness experts forget this and sell something that ends up not being as promised. Ahem... Turkesterone?

The only supplement I ever recommend gen pop to take is creatine. For athletes in specific sport circumstances the use of creatine is a no brainer, but I also recommend caffeine (if they already use it and don't get servere jitters even at low doses), beta-alanine, l-citrulline, and maybe sodium bicarbonate, and nitrate from beets if they don't get enough from food. All have good human evidence to back them up that consistently point in the direction of being ergogenic. IMO there is not enough evidence to support much else currently. Even BCAAs for me are an "on the fence" supplement because meta-analyses find either no benefit or a small-to-trival benefit. Anyway, people can spend their money how they please, but I do agree that supplement makers and "influencers" should have much more integrity and transparency in the products, the research behind them, and the safety of the product. If you choose to supplement, but supplements that are informed choice or NSF certified.

I’ve dissed supplements for years, I only use fish oil tablets, protein powder, CBD gummies & that’s it, I don’t even use pre-workout or creatine. John Brett-a young guy doing a world of good for impressionable fitness enthusiasts. I had a peer die of a heart attack in the gym after taking a pre-workout (early 20s). He didn’t know he had an underlying heart condition, and the 300-400 mg of caffeine mixed with extremely high amounts of vitamins and herbal extracts sent him to an early grave. This shit is no joke- So, thank you Josh Brett for making this video. Everyone needs to really reflect and do their research, and even then, consulting medical and nutritional professionals can certainly help.

I think it depends on the supplement. I had this chronic shoulder joint paint for a few years after hurting it during a cable pull. I started taking collagen peptides and while it not completely healed but I have range of motion back and the almost 80% less pain moving as before. I know this isn't a placebo because I also suffer from psoriasis and my skin hasn't been this clear in I don't remember how long. I'm now a collagen believer.

The only supplements you'll ever need if you choose to get some are protein powder and creatine. Pre-workout is debatable because there's always that conversion of it it actually works or if it is just a placebo. Great video. My only criticism is that cocoa powder can actually be used as a supplement. Cocoa contains epicatechin, a natural myostatin inhibitor. Consuming 50g per day is the recommended dose. Pairing it with creatine and protein makes for a pretty powerful shake. But like you said in the video, supplements account for a very small part of what actually creates results

The only thing I stand by is my multivitamin. After being prescribed creams for my hand eczema caused by roaccutane (eczema that got worse after the cream ‘cured’ it) I remembered reading somewhere that multivitamin might help if you’re deficient in anything. That multivitamin was the ONLY difference and kept the painful eczema at bay (slight itch occasionally) until I finished the roaccutane.

One of the main problems is there is absolutely NO money in bodybuilding, it's the only sport/industry where you pay to go and see a competition and the host company takes all of the money. If you go to a music concert to see a performer they get most of the revenue, if you go and see an NBA game the players are very well compensated based on sales. Bodybuilders get next to nothing, the top classic physique bodybuilder gets £25,000 for WINNING the biggest show of the year that generates almost 100,000 buys at $50 a pop. That's less than US national minimum wage. If you want to be competitive in the fitness industry you have to become a marketing shill, it's just the way it is and it's fucking horrible. Some of the greatest's of all time like Ronnie Coleman didn't make enough from bodybuilding and has to see fat loss topical creme to pay his medical bills. I don't think people shilling products is necessary a bad thing, I think the finger should be pointed at supplement companies who are literally selling powdered caffeine and flavourings to kids for $40 a tub. Bodybuilding is so bad at the moment that some people literally enter it just to promote their new supplement range like Kevin Levrones infamous return. The supplement industry for the most part is a scam, and the next generation is going to have it worse because kids now see very unrealistic physiques on instagram from people who are on grams of test @ 19 years old claiming natural and that all they need is Turkesterone and Creatine. As a general rule of thumb, stay away from anything that you can buy using someone's "promo code in bio"

I got caught in the hype for a pre work out back in 2017. I actually ended up getting super energy every time for about 2 weeks. I have ADHD and my hyper focus was so intense that I couldn't be not busy. My mouth became inflamed and itched my whole body was feeling tingly and fire ants like. Then I stopped using it and felt like garbage for like for a month. I couldn't even motivate myself to grab a bite to eat let a lone workout. Became extremely restless staying up for almost 3 days at a time. I lost 20 pounds that month. Never used supplements again!

Meal replacements are in the same world of supplements. My mom only eats one solid meal, and drinks two “shakes” daily. I am very worried for her health; when she eats her solid meal she will eat anything and everything, she licks plates CLEAN! Then the rest of the day is moody, and probably has other symptoms only she would know about. Suffice it to say she has disordered eating, and we all know even the fresh juice cleanses are bad. I did a 3 day juice cleanse once and learned the hard way that returning solid food to your diet makes your entire GI tract HURT! Please make a video about the harm of meal replacements. Even the solid food ones are awful. If a brownie has NO SUGAR in it and is full of FIBER, then it makes you wonder what else is in it, and if it is really the brownie experience someone is looking for.

I agree with most of this about the products mentioned, as well as a lot of others. But even mainstream medicine, including my general practitioner, recommend a few basic supplements for people not eating a perfect diet or for those under physical stress (such as from sports, heavy exercise, etc.) After quite a while of chasing fatigue problems by looking into thyroid issues, having a sleep study done, monitoring blood sugar, even some psychoanalysis, my doc FINALLY ran micronutrient tests. Turned out I was low in Vitamin D, B-12, B-6, and iron. She did not prescribe any of these, just told me to go buy a broad spectrum high potency multivitamin, and to also add a heme iron supplement (one derived from liver), and for a different reason, she also had me start taking cod liver oil capsules. The result was an incredible cessation of fatigue, and general feeling of improved well being. INCLUDING being more fit, able to exercise with weights again, etc. The recovery started right away, though I would say it was more in the range of 6 weeks before I started to feel really "good" again. Point being, not all supplements are dangerous or a waste of money.

These Influencers are aware of that and are shameless in their approach to acquiring their filthy lucre. They know that their Influence grows exponentially with their wealth and will continue to act in the shameless manner that got them where they are, this is true of Influencers across all spectrums of interests with even religion being full of its charlatans!
