Props to O'Brien for actually giving great and insightful info. I've seen far too many clinics where the coaches just glaze over the most vanilla concepts they have. He's actually using Patriots terminology and reads. Great stuff.

I hate "empty" sets, 0 Rbs. Yeah I know, 5 pass catchers happens to be effective, but I just really prefer RB blitz pickup and check-release. No threat of run, no play action threat, It's just a style of offense Im not crazy about. For one: Forget the possibility of Deep pass unless your QB can run around a while. Deep shots are exciting part of passing game. For 2; I love running game and aggressive run blocking schemes. The most satisfying kind of offense; is Running it well, play action bombing. It's harder to do because O line is hard to find. In NFL Defensive Linemen are superior. Empty set just feels passive, I'm all by myself, please don't hit me, here's some real short passing that can't be stopped because 5 yard passes are too quick to step in front of; and the rush wont get home in shotgun in time to stop a 3 step pass.

Empty isn't new either; I saw it in 2000 Miami NYJ monday night miracle; 2 teams not known for innovation. Or even great offense. The only Empty I liked was Tim Tebow Gators late 2000's and Dak Prescott Miss State 2014-15; cause those guys were still a run threat and Tebow could bash 20 yard gain if defenders were in Man to Man. THAT's fun to watch. It brings back the uncertainty that makes the presnap look more exciting. Especially when Linebackers and D backs start rushing up threatening gaps; hey look at me! I might be blitzing, might not! QB calls audible, hey possible blitzers, I might be changing the play to fuck your blitz up, might not! That's NFL presnap time at its finest.

I'm with you. I love controlling the game with chewing hard yards and wearing teams down. 5 Wide has its place, but I couldn't run it exclusively. The types of formations you can attain with TEs and a well-rounded FB are amazing. Shot plays are my favorite part of the game on offense, but you definitely need an O-Line and running threat to achieve that style.
