GT speaks the truth! I’ve improved so much since following his building blocks approach. It’s literally gold folks. Stop noodling the blues and focus on some of his ideas on caged and arpeggios, major scale etc. If you’re like me, you already know the pentatonic (maj and min) so it’s an easier point to jump from. Thanks Brett Papa for introducing me to his stuff a couple years ago now. 🙏

Great lesson. I learned a bunch. Please tell Guthrie I have a friend in Hawaii downwind from the volcano. Lots of sulfur in the air and he can't ride his bike outside. He got an electronic wheel for the rear of his bike and puts his 15" laptop on the handlebars. For $15/mo he can ride virtually through any city he wants and the rear wheel accurately adjusts the pitch for hills and resistance. he can even ride virtually at the same time with and talk to friends. Take a bike ride through central park NYC and 100s of others. He swears by it

Still coming back to this vid a year later.lol.what I realized is the progression played throughout,is actually in the key ofA.starting on the E.that makes it a mixo progression.E-Bm-A.thats why the natural b min scale don’t work over the Bm,it’s b Dorian in the key of A gsharp
@kilgoretrout3212 жыл бұрын
Someone in the comments asked about Minor CAGED and why it doesn't get any love: If you're already comfortable using the CAGED system to connect shapes up and down the fretboard, you can use it for minor, too. You can because it's the same notes as the minor, and playing minor is as easy as targeting minor chord tones. For example, take the CAGED E-chord shape, but look at the six, one, and three instead of the one, three, and five (or basically just trade the 5th note for the 6th note). Ta da, the listener heard you play a c-minor instead of an E-major arpeggio. Practice it a few times until your ear takes over, and you're all set!

I feel like the intervals are super important to learn to follow this style of lead play, especially when you are playing over multiple chord changes that are more complex. Also, you need to know what the major third is to make it a flat or minor third, in every key. So you do need to know the notes, I know Guthrie knows all of the notes on the guitar, maybe not right on the spot, but it helps with the intervals and chord construction that turns into lead ideas. I can't do the bouncy style he plays, its very smooth and jazzy while somehow being country and funky at the same time.

First time I heard Robben Ford, I had took a chance by purchasing a cassette of his from a music store. It was the Talk to your Daughter album. I was driving north on Route 4 between Hamilton and Fairfield. Ohio. I had pop the tape in and started listening to it. And I also bought the Tiger Walk album when it came out. It’s amazing hearing these two guys tell their stories when they first heard Robben Ford, because it’s identical to mine! I remember where I was when I first heard him.
