Brewing Great Coffee using the Varia x Kurasu Kyoto FLO Dripper

Great video! I am enjoying my Varia FLO dripper. I bought four optional screens to bring it up to a total of seven screen options. As far as cleaning, I found if you rinse the brewer from the top and then rinse the brewer from the bottom (so that you wind up rinsing both sides of the installed screen), you will not have any coffee remaining inside the brewer, so no need to take the brewer apart unless you are changing screens (or have to replace the silicone ring should it need replacing). Yozo Otsuki from Kurasu (co-creator of the dripper) said that he did not disassemble the brewer except to change screens. Keep up the great videos!

Main reason I'm interested in this brewer is for that stainless steel dual wall thermal stability + fast flow base. Recently though I've just been enjoying the simplicity of the V60 and April Brewer so after hearing about the extra attachments + silicone piece + potentially having to unscrew and dry after use has me on the fence. I think ill wait a bit longer to decide to get one but thanks for bringing those cons to light.

My put off was the silicone piece, I thought polished and perfect machining would get rid the need of needing silicone seals

The price is a little steep for a manual brewer, but it is stainless steel so it's a cut-above plastic brewers.

Would have been great if they had been able to use a generic silicone O-ring.I get that the flat ring takes up less space but for longevity a more easily available option would have been better. And I have watched 2 other reviews now and Daddy got coffee actually had some very good points to how important it is to seat the paper in contact with the screen as he had many issues with drip time to start with and found that his filters was not touching. He also tested the dripper without any screen at all and found it worked perfectly as bottomless. So quite versatile with a few cons.

I hope you can compare it with the Orea V4 as it is pretty similar in design and was the first to sell in the market.

Stellar cinematography on this one. Really loved to see the different flow rates between the three dripping at the bottom. That Colombian sounds amazing. Ever since I tried a colombian coffee from Lot61 in Amsterdam I've been aiming for that amazing cup ever since. My lazy butt would probably change the filter two or three times then never change it again 🤣 but very interesting concept though :D Seems like the taste can change quite a bit so I guess trying all three for one coffee can be great to find the "perfect" cup for each. Thanks for sharing.

I'm certainly not an expert on the topic of "bypass." I have bth Hario V60 (plastic) and Kalita 185 (plastic)...as they seem to allow heat retention into my Hario Stainless Server. So...as to bypass...would this brewer tend to have maybe less bypass for us amateur home baristi? Thanks much, and nice Vid.

No, I wouldn’t say this brewer has any design features that make it less susceptible to bypass.
