BREWING NATTY LIGHT beer from WALMART ingredients - we make fake beer from grocery store stuff

It's April Fools, and what better way to fool ourselves than to brew up a grocery store beer. In this episode, we're attempting to home brew Natural Light aka Natty Light. This light lager has barely any character of barley, malt, hops, or other grains. So, other than smelling faintly of beer, it's a great candidate to try making from junk we picked up at Walmart. Hopefully this homebrewing how-to and tasting will keep you from making the same mistake -- or was it a mistake? Can you make beer from NO TRADITIONAL beer-making ingredients other than water and yeast? We'll certainly try!
Should we try another grocery store beer? Let us know which one in the comments. 👇

Years ago, a buddy and I challenged each other to brew a beer entirely from what you'd find in a Wal-Mart - including equipment. I mashed Grape Nuts and corn grits in a paint strainer bag, bittered with rosemary, and fermented in a water jug with some bread yeast. After ferment I added some fruit puree and bottle conditioned. It ended up tasting like a thin and muddy fruited weizen. Not the worst beer I've ever had. Not the worst beer I've brewed.

I like Natty Light. My favorite dive bar, before the virus, sells it on tap for $1.25 for 12 oz. Of course I don’t like it as much as a good craft beer.

I know this is a bit of an old video, but I figured this was the best place to ask you: I made this with more citrus and real hops. I used sparkolloid like you did, but I don’t have a keg. Will bottle conditioning on it work after sparkolloid, or do I need to be looking for a keg?

Thanks so much for posting this. I know you did it as a joke, but I live in a place where I can get neither beer nor brewing supplies, so I'll try anything. Mine came out good, but I left the solids in longer than you did, which seemed to increase the gravity significantly as the ABV is definitely higher than the SG of 1.040 would suggest (sugar from corn and raisins I guess). I agree with you completely about the orange peel also: If I do this again I'll leave it out.

Hey amigo, I love that a common reoccurring theme of your batches is "something anyone can do". I'm wondering if you've ever made wine from grocery store frozen juice concentrate? I've heard people talk about it, and I can of course just Google it, but I don't trust THEM.

Hi Great video...I'm new to brewing but could not help notice that you did not boil the mash. I was under the impression that mashes had to be boiled in order to sanitize them. Could you kindly explain why it was not needed?
@DointheMost
@DointheMost 4 жыл бұрын
This was in no way a real beer. More of a “wine” actually - if we’re technically speaking. So with proper sanitization and no hops, there’s no need to boil!

Chamomile is a great sub for hops . It has pretty much the same character . Or effects chamomile tea makes you sleep better like hops does and it's antibacterial like hops so nothing grows in your beer while it's brewing .It's a bitter herb like hops. Not as bitter or allergy inducing either great stuff

If you are a regular brewer and can buy your grain in big sacs you can definitely brew a session beer with 20 bucks and with a good yeast choice it can be a great tasting beer. But I appreciate your little grocery store beer, I like doing crazy experiments like this one too, jam wines or other stuff when I don’t have the money for a new batch of mead or when I’m in a place where I don’t have my brewing equipment, so I get it !
