Fun fact: prison break is legal in Germany. If you break out and get arrested again there is no increase is the time you need to stay in prison. But if you do illegal stuff to break out like bribing or destroying something you can be punished for that

I love this story. The random acts of human compassion from the "yep you're a Norwegian" to the Rolex to the random Swede who risked his neck to help just make me feel hope inside. @@goat369 Its honestly really hard to tell, without being in that situation yourself. We have accounts of many interesting people who encouraged one another and like brew said in the video would join in on an escape plan, even if it didn't directly benefited them. Simply because any successful escape, was a victory of sorts. With that kind of potential support, I would hope that I wouldn't give up if I ever had to deal with that situation. I would probably not have the will to escape myself... But I would hope that I would have learned a skill or two that would have helped others to escape. I know advanced cryptography theory, so at the very least secret messages could be made from basic food items.

I had a dream where I was crawling through an infinitely vast space, but the floor and ceiling were only about one foot apart, and the farther I crawled to try and escape, the smaller the space would get. Upon realizing this, I decided to try and double- back, but the space kept getting smaller. At this point, I couldn't tell if I was just disoriented or if moving was what caused the space to get smaller. I got desperate at this point, as I had no idea of how long I was there, or how long I would have to stay, so I tried to judge if there was any incline to the space by turning and gaging the distance between the floor and ceiling, but to no avail. I once again tried to find a place where the space was wider, but the ceiling began to crush my body until I could hardly breathe. There I lay on the ground for hours, waiting for rescue, or light, or sound, or something that could help, but nothing came, so I decided to crawl some more.

This was an absolutely fantastic story to listen to. Aside from always being happy when the Nazis are bleeped over, it was incredible to hear how much the prisoners would risk for one another and the resources they would put into helping someone else escape. Of course, I know every man wasn't like that - but enough were. The way you told over the events really drew me in.

It's always so weird to me (in the cool and astonishing way) how elaborate and connected people are in prison escapes, from your mom's teacher simply playing violin, an oddly placed item as a message or a cough or sneeze as signal

Doing the digging nude made sense. You keep your clothes relatively clean. You can wash your skin in the shower, but if the prisoner's didn't do their own laundry, having your clothes covered in dirt would be hard to explain.

@@lanfrancoadreani9212 it's an interesting question to what extent the guards turned a blind eye, which would also have to take into account what kind of punishment they would face for each escaped prisoner. I suspect there's a good deal of "the human brain can only pay attention to so much" going on, they had dozens upon dozens of prisoners to watch

The noses are working out well. Wise decision to use them. Previously, pictures of people on Brew, like the prisoners here, were drawn noseless, and they all had the Innsmouth Look like something out of Lovecraft. Noseless works fine on the forehead-people presenting, but I'm glad to see them back on real people.

My great-great uncle escaped from a Confederate prison somewhere in southern Virginia and made it to Union lines some time after in West Virginia. He wrote a short book of which i am the sole family possessor (a photocopy missing a couple of pages). It is perhaps one of the worst things i ever read! I only made to the end because of the family connection. How could he manage to make something so exciting so boring? God knows, but he managed.

I wish that Conflict of Nations wasn’t so microtransaction-heavy. It’s actually a genius game idea but they fell flat by having that dogwater IAP mindset. Real-time strategy should _never_ give an advantage by spending money. On a side note, these 3 escapees may just have a more impressive prison break than the Alcatraz guys. Genuinely a crazy story.

i think one of the smoothest and coolest prison breaks ever was a prison break from a POW camp in Germany called Holzmiden(forgive my spelling). Lots of people got caught but a bunch actually got out, and that POW camp was supposed to be invincible to breakouts, even a Houdini of POW prison camp escapes couldn't break out.

Idk we had one over here in US that just used 3 blankets. A blanket over each side of the razor wire and a wet blanket for the death fence. Less than 5 min 3 guys got over the fence and into a car.

It's not like you had anything better to do. And you were obligated by duty to help resist the enemy anyways. Just because you were a prisoner doesn't mean you're out of the fight. You're just an enemy non-combatant at that point. Escape was considered a method of harassment. The enemy would have to expend resources to recapture escapees. Which eroded their capacity to wage war.

In those countries, escapees who do not break any other laws are not charged and no extra time is added to their sentence." This may explain why prison break is "only" punished with 10 solitary confinement.

I was at Tomoka C.I. (Florida) in the mid 1990s... some guys started digging under the bleachers on the North rec yard. They dug for weeks before one of them told on the rest. They used their jackets to carry the dirt off, spreading it elsewhere. I think the tunnel was nearing completion, extending under the perimeter, when it was discovered. I heard some guys dug out of Glades CI (also Florida) at one point too. They actually made it out tho.

The key elements were the forged documents, railway timetables , the right civilian clothes with the right buttons and a good cover tale if stopped and questioned. The two best forgers were a Bank of England official, and a solicitor. My father Oliver Philpot wrote the book Stolen Journey, out of print , but second hand copies available. buy the hardback book , the paper in the paperbacks can be too flaky now. These three were the first to escape from Stalag Luft III. All three men had nightmares for the rest of their lives.
