Brexit deadlock - as Tusk says ‘special place in hell’ for Brexiteers with no plan

Going nowhere fast. At least that's according to the European Council President Donald Tusk, who's vented his bitter fury with Brexiteers, declaring that those who "promoted Brexit" without a plan of "how to carry it out safely" deserved a "special place in hell".
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
His anger was triggered by the continuing impasse over the Northern Ireland backstop. Theresa May spent the day in Belfast discussing precisely that with Northern Irish political leaders, although the Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar is under pressure to find a solution too.

He is not wrong. British politicians have to almost be reminded that Ireland exists and then they have territory there. They just went ahead with the referendum while hand-waving away any border concerns. They didn't even seem to bother to plan very much for what Britain was even going to do for brexit. The whole thing is an unnecessary mess.

@@bevila4753 But the reason people wanted the assurance of the backstop was because of the perceived threat to the GFA, which is a commitment that predates May. If it had not been signed, there would have been larger ill-will up to and after the referendum from Ireland and the EU. It arguably would have been more of a mess because the UK would be showing a shocking disregard for peace deals and have much less of a leg to stand on in terms of looking reasonable and acting in good faith. It would instead appear to be a country that sacrifices peace and economic prosperity in other countries for its own goals. Not very sympathetic and certainly not an entity that people are going to be throwing favorable terms at in any upcoming deals.

The GFA has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with us leaving the EU. No one has questioned the integrity of the open border, and EU officials had to come out and say that it has absolutely nothing to do with the border. If the EU demands this that is not our fault. I love how the comments are so against the UK leaving, why does it matter so much to everyone whether we're in the European Union or not? Surely you can see it's failing?

Btw, the amateurish behaviour to negotiate a deal and then come back for changes after it is ratified combined with the endless requests for further concessions will make a future trade agreement with the EU more difficult. The EU is still the biggest market for UK markets. There is not much car exports (if these companies stay in England) to the few small countries that do trade on WTO rules solely. And about the Brits pub talks about not paying what they already agreed on. Not accept your legal obligation but breaking a contract does not help with the UKs credibility.

Honestly, with all due respect towards everyone in the UK, but honestly, I think that most people in the EU are done with the BS coming from the UK politics. 2,5 years of hard work for this nightmare? Our negotiations look like a horse with 4 broken legs, it would be a good deed to put it out of its misery as soon as possible. I think Donald's words were harsh, but I couldn't agree with him more. The Brexit is a mess, a collection of sadness and irrational expectations. At this point, a no deal will only feel like sweet relief, I just don't care anymore and I'm afraid many other politically engaged people in the EU feel the same to an extent.

@@johnnndoeee674 Haha, don't make me laugh. About 50% of your international trade is directly with the EU, whereas only 10% of the trade of the EU is with the UK. If it's anything that will fall apart, it's the UK with North-Irland and Scotland leaving and rejoining the EU again. I have no doubt about it. Of course, only time will tell, but I'd happily place my money on the EU outlasting the UK by a long shot. And just for clarity, he doesn't care about the UK leaving, the UK has always been the outsider anyways, wanting special arrangements and such. What angers him is the utter shithole UK politics has turned into. Nobody in the EU understands what the UK wants, yet it is the UK that decided to leave. He is angry that those people who wanted to leave didn't have any idea how they would leave. He didn't say anything about them leaving.

It is not a border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.Ireland is the whole island. Its a British border imposed in Ireland after an ignored democratic election of 1918 led to the Irish War of Independence. The British as part of the treaty negotiations with the Irish after the Irish War of Independence agreed to have a "Boundary Commission" set up in 1925. This was to review the border which split the 6 counties in the north east of Ireland and left a large part of the population of Nationalists trapped behind a new border that never existed before. That Boundary Commission never happened as successive British Governments never kept their word after agreeing in 1925. Northern Ireland was set up as a gerrymandered so that the native Irish would be always outnumbered by the planted settlers state but demographics will eventually change that !

This published comment sort of says it all, Back in 2015, Britain rejected plans announced by Brussels to combat ‘industrial-scale tax avoidance by the world’s biggest multinationals’. Britain had built a corporate tax haven for multinationals that included slashing corporation tax from 28 per cent to 20 per cent - new favourable tax regimes for multinationals with offshore financing subsidiaries, and tax breaks for patent-owning companies. @@ravenclaw255 No deal only destroys the country. Brexit is about the UK leaving the EU. That doesn't mean destroying every connection with Europe, it means leaving the European Union. A deal needs to be made to ensure we can still trade with the EU, we can still fly planes in and out of EU airspace, we can still have people cross the borders back and forth, our citizens, who are living abroad, can continue to live in EU countries without disruption to their lives. The border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland continues to "not exist". No deal isn't a "true brexit" because it doesn't just sever the UK from the EU but it severs it from Europe and the rest of the world....the UK becomes a tiny island with no connections to anywhere.

Imagine this, It's 2023 Ireland has been sliding back into civil war for the last few years. There are car bombs happening almost weekly and the streets of Belfast and (London)Derry look like they did in the 1970s, Hundreds of people have already died. Its 9am rush-hour and the phone rings at the BBC. Somebody picks up and is greeted by a code word and a thick Northern Irish accent retorts "Britain will never be safe as long as Ireland is unfree" Just then a loud explosion is heard and smoke can be seen rising in the distance through the window. The New IRA has just successfully detonated the first bomb in downtown London since 5-05 killing many. This is one possible future of many that still may happen. Tusk was not talking about most of the British Politicians like Cameron whose sin is arrogance, instead he talks of people like Borris Jonson who it seems has been playing a game the whole time and who should know better having been around long enough to have seen the bad times in Nothern Ireland and the amount of good work that was done by all sides in achieving the peace process on the Island of Ireland.

The British people in general have little or now comprehension of how divided the north still is and how fragile the Good Friday Agreement is, and while there may be some excuse for them, there is no excuse for their politicians. It's obvious they care little for us in the North but they must realise that if we return to the troubles the violence will not be contained within the six counties, and they are doing their own electorate a great disservice by twisting the facts and not accepting the reality of the situation.

If the Irish are so determined to keep the border open, then they should be the first ones to the negotiating table to salvage the withdrawal agreement between the EU and the UK. When the UK crashes out of the EU next month and the EU demands the Republic of Ireland to close and secure the border to protect the EU single market, perhaps then they will see how foolish they have been. The UK of course will be under no obligation to close their side of the border. The UK can simply do nothing, and let the EU force Ireland to break the Good Friday agreement. I wonder how the Irish will react to that? Perhaps IRA bombings in Brussels?

The real reason for Brexit. Back in 2015, Britain rejected plans announced by Brussels to combat ‘industrial-scale tax avoidance by the world’s biggest multinationals’. Britain had built a corporate tax haven for multinationals that included slashing corporation tax from 28 per cent to 20 per cent - new favourable tax regimes for multinationals with offshore financing subsidiaries, and tax breaks for patent-owning companies. As a result, Britain saw a number of large corporations like Aon, Fiat Industrial, and Starbucks’ European operations set up headquarters in the UK with a small number of staff in order to take advantage of these tax laws …The common tax regulations would have clamped down on offshoring and removed many of these elements of Britain’s competitive tax advantages over other EU member states. Then European Commissioner for Tax, Pierre Moscovici, stated that: ‘The current rules for corporate taxation no longer fit the modern context, as corporate tax planning has become more sophisticated and competitive forces between member states have increased, the tools for ensuring fair tax competition within the EU have reached their limits’. Earlier in 2015, Conservative, UKIP and DUP MEPs also voted against EU plans to crack down on corporate tax dodging, by making companies report where they make their profits and pay taxes. The plan included a requirement for all member states to agree on a common EU position for the definition of tax havens and for coordinated penalties to be imposed upon countries or territories across the world that are uncooperative in tackling tax evasion. Then just two weeks ago, the EU revealed that they were set to launch an investigation into a British Government scheme that could help multinational firms pay less tax. The EU believes that the special exemptions for multinationals in Britain do not comply with EU competition rules as they allow them to pay less tax than their domestic-only competitors. So with the release of the Paradise Papers last week, it is useful to examine the relationship that Britain has with tax avoiders and evaders and the UK’s stance on the EU clamp-down on tax dodging tactics. The crux of the investigation centres around the UK’s ‘controlled foreign company’ (CFC) rules that George Osborne implemented in 2013. It allows a multinational company that resides in the UK to reduce its tax bill by moving some taxable income to an offshore subsidiary (or CFC). The Conservatives, UKIP, and DUP frequently voted against tax evasion regulation in the European Parliament. The Conservative government pushed back against the EU crackdown on tax evasion by large corporations, and now the EU is investigating Britain’s controlled foreign companies rules that are thought to benefit large multinationals who can push their tax burdens offshore. CFC reforms are set to become EU law, with all member states required to have anti-CFC tax evasion measures on their books from January 2019. Hard-line Brexiteers and UKIPers are desperate to get out of the EU by 2019, including those who have stood adamantly in opposition to the crackdown on tax evasion. So I ask, at what point do we admit that tax evasion regulation was a driving force behind Brexit?

Ireland has been pushed around for long enough. There's no better time for a reunification. Businesses are already moving away to nearby EU countries to have access to the single market - the Republic already made plans to accommodate them. More will follow post-Brexit. Both Ireland and Scotland could gain a lot by staying and offering them access to the EU - only because the rest of the UK decided to shrivel up and become irrelevant doesn't mean they have to as well. One country's failures are another country's successes, after all.

If it's no deal and a border in Northern Ireland, so be it. This has gone on long enough. No extension, no renegotiation.

It's not their top priority at all. They don't give a fig for Ireland or any other EU state. It's their contrived leverage that's their top priority. Just wait 48 days and you will see how important Ireland is to them. They have played Varadka like a puppet.

I don't get it, say us Irish agreed to a time limit of the backstop, it doesn't mean that the UK parliament will agree with that. So T May is negotiating without knowing what will be satisfactory to the majority of the parliament.

Funny how some English call Tusk and the EU arrogant. Isn't it arrogant to expect 27 countries to strike a deal that pleases only one?

Brexit is like going a step backwards. But thats ok. One day we will go two steps forward and form together the European Federation. Mark my words.

If Brexit ever does happen (which I doubt), younger Brits will be more keen than ever to get back in - more so than we are now.
