As an outsider (non-Brit), this is what I wonder about. The Prime minister says there should’nt be a second referendum because the people already decided last time. The idea that the EU would be willing to compromise its founding principles to benefit the UK has been completely debunked by now. This has been obvious to almost anyone outside the Westminster bubble from the beginning, when the EU refused to even discuss Brexit before the article 50 notification, and managed to forge a consensus within the EU27 about the strategy. Donald Tusk’s statement simplified things, there are three choices: by 11PM on the 29th the UK can - vote for the deal with the EU - do nothing and exit without a deal - cancel brexit altogether No Malthouse compromise or other nonsense is on the table, and “none of the above” is not an option, even though it’s the only thing the House of Commons seems to be able to vote in favour of. The message is “Pick one, and accept the consequences.”

Where did May got her End of June idea from? It had been said several times by the EU that an extension is only possible before the election of the EU parliament. It makes a lot of sense and even wikipedia knows: "The next elections to the European Parliament are expected to be held between 23 and 26 May 2019". The British PM seems to create her own parallel universe where everything that the UK wants is bindung for all other nations and in which only May can secure the democracy of the UK. This is way beyond her capabilities.
@sibience5 жыл бұрын
Personally I think she's had some kind of mental breakdown. The pressure of trying to deliver something that was impossible to deliver has pushed her over the edge. She speaks like she knows what the population wants but she hasn't got a clue, she's completely in her own world at this point I think. She's just completely focused on trying to keep face for her party whilst at the same time watching the country go down the toilet.
@jensraab29025 жыл бұрын
From what I understand the 30th of June date comes from the fact that the newly elected European parliament will constitute on the 1st of July. So the rationale seems to be that if they have to be out before that the 30th of June is fine. I'm not an expert on European law but I guess if there were enough goodwill you could stretch the extension to the 30th of June. But why should the EU do this? All it would accomplish, one is almost forced to think, is that this sorry affair would be drawn out to its maximum without any true benefit.
@thoughtful_criticiser5 жыл бұрын
@@jensraab2902 you're right about the parliament not convening until then. @2Crassus Crassus The EU's red lines are around its fundamental founding principles (the ones that we signed up to when we joined). The EU is never going to shift on those, because they are an essential part of its make-up. May has made up her own red lines. They have been pulled out of the air (or maybe her Derry Air) in order to appease the far-right within her own party, but they are not immovable, other than in her own obstinacy and intransigence. The deal she has agreed with the EU is the best one _where those lines intersect_, but if May was not so damn stubborn and considered anyone outside the ERG then she could move her red lines and get a much better deal for the country. I look forward to, when we crash out, the inevitable movement from Brexiteers to rejoin the EU after realising how good we actually have it. The EU was not an issue for the people before the referendum, we get a hard fought rebate from the EU giving back a significant portion of the £350 million we give. We bought into the tagline of "The Will of the People" at best that was misleading, at worst it's an outright lie. Yes 52% of the total votes were for lave, that is true, but alone does not make it "The Will of the People" There are many MANY more people who live and work in this country than the roughly 7.3 million (EDIT: 17 Million) people that voted to leave, they had no voice in the referendum. So is it true to say that Brexit is "The Will of the Voters" I'd argue that there is a technicality. The 52% is of the total leave votes NOT 52% of the registered voters. That percentage does not take into account those who were registered but abstained in the vote. Taking them into account the Leave vote accounts for a little over a third of the total voters in this country. We've been suckered into this being "The Will of the People" to the point that people blindly attack those who voted remain or those who are working for a deal. Will of the People? Will of a Vocal Minority is more apt. I hope we can make the best of a no deal, but frankly we don't deserve it And if that should come to pass? I won't say I told you so, I won't laugh I'll be weeping

Brexit may have been the finest piece of political manipulation in history. UK is so opposed to May's deal and Remain that now the only logical remaining option is a no-Deal brexit. 10% of UK economy is EU exports (which can be phased to the continent quite quickly), 80% is financial services (which can be relocated to literally anywhere in Europe on the very last day before Brexit) due to the freedom of movement of capital. So the financial elite got some mouthpieces together and fed the citizenry a story about how they were no longer a democracy, egging them on to vote for the political elite that promised a favourable exit out of Europe. Now on the run-up to the deadline, the EU (saving political face) still has the same 3 options open to the UK it has from the start: Remain, May's Fake-Leave or no-Deal Leave. The Brrrritish public won't accept Remain nor Fake-Leave as it would be a "betrayal of the public". So what is left? no Deal. So the EU-exporting companies will be moved to the continent over a couple of years, the financial services can move their funds to their continental branches on the last day, and the UK has been succesfully phased out. 66 Million people less to worry about for only a short-term financial loss. With the added benefit of instantly putting any EU nation thinking about leaving back in line as soon as everyone sees what happened to a former Great Power that left in their utter arrogance. Win-win-win-win situation for the EU. Internal politics easier for the Franco-German alliance, mid to long-term financial benefit for the EU as a whole, civil unrest utterly smashed and a strong unified politically-reliable EU image portrayed to the rest of the world. Because they weren't pushed out. They chose out.

What the British have failed to understand for about 2 1/2 years: Germany will always prioritize the integrity of the EU over profits. And they won't bend over backwards to keep the UK in just because they are a net contributor. But I guess we always assume everyone acts the same as we do ourselves.

DRSNova True. And we are already the biggest net contributor and happily agreed to pay even more in the future…

And Germany will always protect the single market at all cost is because its industry is thinking long term. The Boss of BMW knows perfectly well that whatever money the company will lose due to Brexit, it's nothing compared to what they will lose daily if the single market breaks apart.

gosh mr henkel why even ask him he wants the EU gone totaly its like asking a serial killer how he fews murder laws
@walden62725 жыл бұрын
Serial killers prefer murder laws, do you know why? Just think about it. If murder is legal, then serial killers will get kill by the victim's family. You think they want that? The law prevents good people from killing them. So they prefer the law so that they can go to prison when caught and enjoy the nice retirement in jail home payed by tax payers.
