One of the biggest, most inexcusable mistakes the Tories have ever made was not electing him leader of the party. They had a few opportunities but wasted all of them. Instead, they chose lightweights, like Ian Duncan Smith and the former PR executive, David Cameron whose idea of leadership was leading by Daily Mail and Telegraph opinion poll. Had Ken Clarke been elected to lead the Conservatives, the party and the whole country would have been in a much better place now.

The majority of Parliament voted to hand over responsibility of the potential of leaving the European Union, to the people, in a form of a Referendum. The majority of Parliament voted to Remain in the European Union. Nevertheless, the majority of Parliament voted to trigger Article 50, to leave the European Union with or without a deal. MPs can’t run away from the electorate. We will vote them out if they don’t deliver the will of the people’. Leave means leave the EU in its entirety. As the leave vote won there should be no compromise. Why do the people who won the referendum need to compromise with the remainders? We had the debate and leave won. If remain had won would they be compromising with the leavers? They’d have said you lost move on. Parliament is acting as a dictatorship by not delivering the will of the people.

I’ve seen WTO and it’s scary in principle and takes 5-10 years to get right. It does create great economic harm. So it comes down to pricing... real pricing on products. Are brits going to pay the price for goods at the till our their own pocket, or will British government pay for those through EU concessions and no tariffs. That was this mess comes down to. Pay at the point of buying a product, or let our National Government pay through membership. Think about it.... when you pay a price on goods than you pay tax which is collected.

Let's not forget that whilst Ken might be right on the EU, he has a responsibility for leading the country down the road of Brexit, which he refuses to acknowledge... As chancellor in the Major government, he slashed public services, cut benefits for the poorest and cut income tax for the richest and to pay for those tax cuts introduced fees for NHS eye-tests, and put VAT on gas/electricity. He also cut basic rate income tax to 23%, perpetuating the myth that tax cuts trickle down to the poorest... They don't! In this interview Ken says (and is not challenged by the interviewer), under Thatcher & unlike now, the Tories didn't have a populist agenda. Really? Is he that old he forgets what he voted for in the Thatcher government, all policies which at one time or another he advocated and voted for; Council House sales? Not populist? Really?, Then what about; "If you see Fred tell him" gas privatisation, mass privatisations of utilities. The break up of the old British Rail to prepare for privatisation, the poll tax, Compulsive Competitive Tendering (CCT) of council services where councils' were not allowed to bid to run their own services... Slashing benefits, and massive tax cuts for the richest, the 'reform' of education to cut the pay and conditions of 'fat cat' council staff like teachers and social workers, and not increasing pay for nurses because they do their job for the feel good factor, not pay - all populist! Ken's voting record record in the Commons is such that he votes against increases in benefits - allways and (so far) forever, even in line with inflation, and votes for increasingly draconian benefits sanctions including the bedroom tax. Now the dispossessed and poorest blame the EU, for the mess he helped to create! Ken Clarke; right on the EU, wrong on everything else!

It was the timing. If Brexit happened in let’s say 1993, one year after Maastricht, I’d have no problem with it. Now is why EU exist. Now is when totalitarianism is growing. EU (including UK) secured democracy in three former fascist states and in eleven former communist ones. That is nothing but glorious actions. Now is the time to stay in the union. That is why I never again will look at the UK with the same trust and respect as before. Same with the US, btw… I think Ken Clarke agrees with the above.

I find this notion that Theresa May must be blamed for the failure to reach an agreement to be so pathethic. The failure to agree on something was a collective failure to find a solution. May put forward her best option. The other options were less successful, and now the parliament must choose the least unpalatable option or come up with something else. But simply blaming May is just a reflection of people's inability to take collective responsibility.
@KryzMasta
@KryzMasta 5 жыл бұрын
wingedpearloyster I see your point, and a very peculiar set of circumstances brought her (and the UK) here, but you have to consider the following points: 1) She voted remain, but wanted to be the Brexit PM. That’s not an easy task to start with, be careful what you wish for. 2) She was overly confident in her public support and wanted to expand her majority and called an election (when she’d previously said she wouldn’t), and lost her majority, subsequently having to form a coalition with the DUP. 3) She and her government were and are the only entity which has the authority to negotiate the terms of the withdrawal (and after that of the post-Brexit relationship with the EU), but she needed parliament to approve of that deal. Knowing this, how come she negotiated only within her party, took her red lines from the ERG, while simultaneously losing the backing of both the ERG and the DUP due to the Irish border backstop? 4) Next, she simply tried to run out the clock in order to make sure there wouldn’t be time to negotiate anything else once she’d put this deal to parliament, and MP’s simply wouldn’t let themselves be painted into a corner like that. So they voted her deal down. Thrice now. 5) Lastly, she squandered all her political negotiating power by ruling out no deal and offering up her position in order to get backing for her deal. Now she has nothing left to bargain with. If she’d run the indicative vote process herself a year and a half ago - setting the agenda, showing she was willing to reach across the isle, figuring out what would be able to carry a majority - she’d be looking cooperative and a strong leader now. I guarantee you parliament would’ve shown exactly the same result as last Wednesday - 8 motions and not a single majority - and the country would say: well, screw those MP’s, please mrs. May, take control, and lead the way, they apparently don’t have a clue. It’s her lost opportunity at every turn, so yes, she’s responsible. And if it’s not because of that, it’s simply because she’s the PM, who is the executive responsible for running the show, and that responsibility comes with a price when you fail at your task. No matter how complicated or contentious.

She has made mistakes to be sure. But her mistakes didn't create the fundamental problem, which neither May nor anyone else can solve in a way that everybody is happy with; and that is: how does Britain extricate itself from the EU without suffering all the costly consequences and difficulties that entails? That's what everybody wants to avoid - paying the price.
@KryzMasta
@KryzMasta 5 жыл бұрын
wingedpearloyster Well, she didn’t put the UK in this position in the first place, that’s true. There’s 40 years of Eurolies, Torie rhetoric and media bias, culminating in a stupid party-based strategy from Cameron gone wrong. But your argument is that she can’t be blamed for the process that is now leading to no agreement. And I disagree with you: had she reached across the isle instead of making this a partisan endeavour, she could’ve reached an agreement (a compromise for sure, but an agreement nonetheless) months and months ago.

@@tomrawley6549 Thats the Russian Federation. EU has an elected parliament, the council of ministers, i.e the leaders of all 28 (UK Still a member) has final authority are elected by their nations. The Executive, put options to the ministers, those options are then decided on then the commission argues for the option chosen by the ministers. The parliament discusses and decides on laws and regulations for day to day operation of europe. The ministers and parliament are all elected. Power resides in their hands, the commission is the visible element but they do not choose. The EU is a democratic organisation. Which is no bringing in TAX AVOIDANCE LAWS, which will curtail company and pivate wealth from being hidden offshore. If you dont like their choices, then blame the individual states who elect the people who decide which way europe goes. Europe has allowed UK since the 70's to grow and prosper, our products, produce and most important services are freely supplied through 28 and by arrangement a further 100 countries. BREXIT is a nationalistic idea, that when you look at it from a logical and realistic view will cause immense financial damage, even the BREXIT parliament has admitted it will take 30 to 40 years for the UK to get back to the position we are in now. Which means 30-40 years of increased poverty & unemployment. Which when taken into account with current debt levels, will put at risk current Social security & NHS & Defence spending. Ken Clark presents a sensible persona, but he ignores the simple fact that the majority of voters, voted to LEAVE. The fact that parliamentarians don't want to leave is the problem. People like Ken Clark are intentionally thwarting democracy, because of their own personal opionion. Ken Clark is meant to be a servant of the people, he is ignoring the specific directive of the UK voters.

Ken Clarke is probably one of the few remaining Thatcherites in the Conservatives, certainly the only well-spoken and broad-thinking one. Looking at his political career, he represents the classic market liberalist views while holding strong traditional values more akin to what it used to be back in the olden days. Even though I disagree with the majority of his policies, at least I can understand where he's coming from and he's informed in geopolitics and history. Having him as an opponent in a democracy is certainly more positive than the likes of Boris Johnson or the rest of the ERG, who seem to be teenagers with shortsighted, spiteful opinions.

Good or bad. Brexit collectively means more jobs for British workers, less wage depression, tightly controlled immigration and a return of sovereignty. If the remainers wanted brexit to not happen they would have had to do the following years ago: 1/Get out of recession fast 2/Get control of immigration What did the remainers do: 1/Nothing about the economy 2/Double/power pump immigration (open the borders) Can only push so far before there is a backlash.
