"There's no reason to pretend today's a happy day" - those were the words of EU council president Donald Tusk after he received the Prime Minster's letter.
Later there was a slap down from German Chancellor Angela Merkel who denied the Prime Minister's request for two separate sets of talks.
Sky's Europe Correspondent Mark Stone has all the reaction from Brussels.

@@_TheOneRing_ As yet no country has left the UK. Sturgeon is trying for independence so Scotland can waltz back into the EU. Scotland financially can not meet the terms to apply for membership. They can not keep the pound, to do so would mean they will become a satellite state of the Uk. Therefore they can not adjust the interest rates etc set by the UK. Also it is thought Spain would veto a membership application, because Catalonia wants independence from Spain. Sturgeon boasts about Scottish oil, being able to make up the deficit needed to apply. In reality most of it belongs to the UK , thanks to Thatcher putting some complicated borders right through the North Sea in the 80s. Politically Johnson is beginning to snub and ignore the SNP at every opportunity. And last , but most importantly, the Queen has her holiday homes over the border.

@forlorndream1400 7 жыл бұрын
ML8593wy Yes. If the EU didn't need UK protection so much then raving EU-philes like Verhofstadt wouldn't be making such a big issue over its potential loss. MI5, MI6, GCHQ, 5 eyes, all integrated with our police and military and almost unrestricted access to all American security services intelligence. Together that's a truly global and, more importantly, functional network. The EU has nothing even close to what the UK has.

Do people forget why we left the EU? We left due to the fact that any EU citizen could immigrate into the UK with no questions asked, and with the previous terror attacks happening in France and Germany. The EU prescribed laws for the UK without any consultation and despite voting against propositions we were just left to be the yes man. Of the 92 propositions the UK said no to 0 were discontinued, its ridiculous to think that this is a day of sadness for anyone who isn't European to control the people who won the war against bureaucracy and a policing unmarginalised state that goes against democracy and is openly keeping secrets from the general public.

I think what he was trying to get at was in the last 10 or so years over two thirds of the new laws passed in the UK were created and decided by the European Commission. which is made up of unelected European ministers in Brussels. Not only do we have no way to replace or decide who these members are, we have no veto or reasonable course of action to stop any law created. This situation has become even worse recently when Cameron came away from the recent reform deal with a new red card system that requires a 55% vote of support to halt any proposal we don't want!

As soon as the referendum was announced to begin, I would've expect to see peace gatherings in EU nations of people who love there allies Britain and dont want them to leave. To see people who are sad that it was happening and wanted to help us to feel better as allies. To cite our cultural, technological, and overall societal impact upon the other EU nations as a reason they wanted us to stay. But no, instead they became VERY angry, They were disgusted, they hated us, bullied us, and outright went out of their way to mock and vilify us. If they had done what a "close and peaceful collective of nations" would be expected to do, we would never of voted leave, or at least, i never would have. Because of them it quickly moved from Economics and migration policy disputes to a full out race war where everybody in Europe hates the British outright. Europe never changes.

@@user-gq9oq9cn6y the eu denying the UK voters a direct say for 43 years was only their fault. the referendum was a ``reaction`` to the eu actions over the past 40 years. They dare call it democratic then refuse to allow the voters a say on the eu law makers in the eu commission. Statements like juncker made was all the eu shooting itself in the foot. juncker stated "there can be no democratic choice against the eu treaties" , three words the brits do not like, no democratic choice. Being denied a say on Lisbon was bad enough, but to watch Irelands NO vote being outright ignored, that is 100% all the eu and was feck all to do with the UK . Ireland, Netherlands France Greece, all NO votes ignored. Magna Carta dictates we the people MUST have a say, the eu attempted to take away our sovereign rights as sovereign citizens, that was just not on boyo.
