Brexit Used As An Argument Against A United Ireland?

What is the best way to stop a United Ireland if you are a Unionist? Well, it seems to be to talk about how wonderful Post Brexit UK is. This apparently is the message from the News Letter's Ben Lowry. Unionists don't need to discuss a United Ireland, nationalists need to debate the Union.

I used to be the advertising sales manager for the Sunday Express and I was approached by a media headhunter to see if I would be interested in moving back to Ireland as the Newsletter were looking for a Sales Manager.I told him that I would love to move back to Ireland as my family are from the Donegal Roses but I reckoned that as soon as they saw my name, Kieran Kelly which is an extremely Catholic name, they would not touch me with a barge pole. He didn't believe that my religion would be a problem as I had exactly the right experience that they were looking for. I told it could no harm putting me forward but the next day he came back to me with deepest apologies as they were not in the least bit interested in even having an initial chat with me. That was about 25 years ago and not much has changed with sectarian discrimination since then Very sad to see that they have not moved on from the days of the Troubles

I;d say it's about having the discussion - or even the argument (though I wou;ldn't want it to be arguement) - in good faith. We should have having these talks, realty is what it is... As soon as it gets into demonstrable nonsnese (I.e. The Farage shit slurping campaign) - then it all goes out the window. Yes there are things that need to be addressed, there are problems... but one group of people are going "Migrants, trans people, other!!! It's their fault" And another group of us are hoping to actually make the world a better fecking place. This shouldn't really be up for discussion, I find it intensely maddening. Brexit has brought huge advantages and benefits to Ireland! Honestly the Unionist community in NI would be substantially better off in a United Ireland - from an economic point of view anyway. From every other point of view they as a community hold more influence and power in a United Ireland than in the UK, so they can very easily negotiate for pretty much anything they want. From an objective point of view, I just don't see why the Unionist community won't join a United Ireland

He was responding to an earlier point in which it was (correctly) stated that a refusal by Unionists to constructively engage in a debate about what a united Ireland might look like and how best to protect identities within it could only increase the likelihood that they would find themselves within one, without their voice ever having been heard and decisions therefore made on their behalf in the absence of said contribution from them. His response was therefore doubly fatuous. One, because he tried to juxtapose a delusional fantasy of his own (his take on what is Post-Brexit UK) against the original speaker's simple declaration of fact and reality. And two, because what he therefore actually implied was that Unionists could best realise their own ambitions, not by enagaging with reality, but by immersing themselves ever deeper in aspirational fantsy, and even inviting Nationalists to come along for the ride. This was of course, by way of rhetoric, in diametric opposition to what the original speaker had assumed, namely that Unionism's best way forward was to understand the reality it inhabits and engage with it. Fifty or so years ago a prominent Unionist politician within the Vanguard Party (forerunner to the DUP in many ways), William Craig, once stated at a rally that one should not see the civil war in which his society had been plunged as a fight just between Nationalist and Unionist, but ultimately between fantasist and realist. And, in the context of his time, he actually had a point. Realism at the time had to recognise, whether one approved or not, that NI was "a Protestant state for a Protestant people". Without that core philosophy underpinning every aspect of its polity, the polity itself ceased to exist. That was just the reality of things, and Craig saw it as his purpose to uphold, defend and impose that reality - nothing good could come about from fantasists winning that struggle. Now, that situation has completely reversed - those who recognise reality and those who resort to aspirational pursuit of ill-defined fantasy have completely swapped camps. Lowry simply proves that point.

As an Irish Nationalist I'm willing to discuss a 'New Northern Ireland' with Ben and anyone else in the Unionist community. Let's start with an Irish language act, im more than happy to have an Ulster-Scots one too, an end to all sectarian marches and bonfires, the building of a University in Derry City. I'm sure there are other things we could discuss too in relation to a 'New Northern Ireland' but if we could agree on these things, that I believe would go a long way to ensuring that Northern Ireland remains part of the UK. Sticking to how things are now however will probably not be enough in the long term to persuade the growing Nationalist community to favour voting to stay in the UK.

"...a post-Brixit, wonderful new UK"? And WHERE might that be? "Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high There's a land that i have heard of once in a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true"? The sunlit uplands where the unicorns do frolic? Back in reality, why would ANY Nationalist, or indeed Unionist, who voted 'Remain' in the referendum, want to get involved in building "...a post-Brixit, wonderful new UK"? The man is deluded, and that is being as charitable as possible....

The only good reason for Unionism of any kind is that the disparate parts of the Union are better off in it than out of it. That requires a degree of thought, knowledge, consideration and fairness that has been completely missing from this union for many, many decades. That so many people in Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland wish to distance themselves permanently from a system run by Westminster isn't an accident. It's the result of too many years of careless abuse by an ignorant, self-satisfied clique.

Why a union of nations? Why not a confederation of nations? Supporting each other as friends and neighbours. If the IA nations(Serbia, Croatia, ect) can do it in the eurovision song competition, then the nations of Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales, could stand by each other and protect their own interests as well.
@PortilloMoment
@PortilloMoment Жыл бұрын
@@liamm.1431 It's worth exploring but I'm afraid I'm too cynical to believe our London-centred politics and economics wouldn't rabidly resist such a move. I could easily see an independent Scotland, an independent Wales and a united Ireland forming some kind of association however, and making a good job of it. As is so often the case where the smaller nations of the union are concerned, its larger partner that is the problem, behaving not as a partner but as an overseer.

Having the DUP swallow their pride and take their place in Stormont would allow a functioning assembly . This would be first step to normalizing relationships with Ireland, UK and EU. Only the DUP thinks a stalemate is progress.

Up to recently, all NI Assembly members were getting their full salaries (despite the DUP boycott). Now that has been reduced: they only get a portion as elected reps. The other amount, as legislators, has been removed, with now (due mainly to the blinkered DUP), the Assembly having been elected, with the power to pass local devolved laws, but not meeting.

The front page of a paper today (I think it was the i), had that 1-7 leave voters would now vote remain. Look at how many voted and do the maths. Run the referendum today and it’s a very clear vote to remain. Give it a year and it will be a very clear number will want to rejoin. But will there still be a U.K. by then?

There was no general election during WW1. The first election in Dec 1918, the last time that the whole of Ireland voted together, to elect 105 MP's, returned 79 pro-Independence, only 23 pro-Union! Country was partitioned, electorates were gerrymandered to ensure Unionist majorities in Stormont & local government councils. Was that fair, equitable and democratic? 🤔

An argument against reunification could be the special position NI finds itself in now, being able to sell tariff free into the EU and UK economies. Now I'm not advocating anything for NI, just as I won't get involved with Scottish independence. I don't live in those places and don't feel my opinion is relevant. However what I will say is that any campaign in those regions that follows similar motivations as those for brexit without a detailed financial analysis and justification, could bring harm to the residents. I want to stress 'could' because I have made no such analysis but clearly nor did the pro brexit mob and it is agreed that was a failure.

I am sick of people like this telling me (sadly in the UK currently) that brexit is wonderful and it’s great but irish reunification or Scottish independence is mad? Sick of it and the amount of minds twisted by this pish shows it. It is the reason I’m leaving as soon as my degree is done and I don’t plan to return to Scotland unless it’s an independent nation or the UK massively reforms and stops appeasing these ludicrous unionists who see nothing but a union flag and “togetherness”. Sorry everyone, rant over.

For Unionists the Brexit way intended from the getgo was a widened UK in which the Republic of Ireland had to be 'integrated'. Several times it was said so by Nigel Farage. All leading brexiters said so on occasions. The DUP would gladly revise history with false narratives. 1973 the UK and the ROI joined the EU. So to an english Brexit meant leaving together. This way the 'troubles' would have lost their cause. The audacity in this fits perfectly with the unionist behavior since NI was 'invented'.
