A Brexiteer from the IEA right-wing think tank was invited on to BBC Panorama to talk about the benefits of Brexit, but he blames the EU for 3rd country status and he suggests that Brexit is a means to "shake up" the economy, something that could benefit businesses.

Was gonna say somehting similar - GB decided to leave, you can blame the EU all day long, it doesn't change the fact that the EU didn't want GB to leave, but GB insisted on it. And after they got what they wanted they keep complaining that they no longer any infuence in the EU. Who would've thought? What Johnson and his lackeys realy wanted was reaping all the benefits from the EU without any of the attached obligations. They are not alone with that sentiment, but they are the only ones who actually got to the point where they have to learn the hard way that you just can't have the cake and eat it. And of course now the blameshifting begins.

37% of the electorate at the time voted to leave, which it it had been a legally binding referendum wouldn't have reached the threshold to leave, it will be less now with more older people having died and younger Brits being more pro EU. It was more than the 33% that voted to remain so that couldn't just be dismissed, 30% either didn't know which way to vote or didn't care. This is what saddens me the most. It wasn't just not the will of the majority of the people it was barely over a third. There will be a reckoning when it becomes clear what has been done and eventually we will re-engage with Europe on much more friendly terms unlike now.

Simple, the BBC is threatened on a daily basis to lose its funding source (coming out of a long gone period and very undemocratic : Licence fees you must pay even if you don't use the service). So the BBC is not any better than Murdoch's newspaper. They cannot bite the hand which feeds them.
@Charlie_Crown
@Charlie_Crown 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnjeanb The BBC wasn't always like this, only in recent years, especially now with a Tory donor at the helm, and although I agree, to an extent, about the licence fee, it once represented genuine value for that fee. But BBC in its present form, certainly under big Tory donor Richard Sharp, I don't want to be forced to pay for a propaganda network against my will, especially when I could be fined for seeking out more balanced views on other platforms, by virtue of refusing to pay for said BBC propaganda, so most definitely undemocratic in its current form. If it ever reverts back, balanced, i'm ok with the fee though 👍

I think you're mixing something up here. The UK is not in the same position / doesn't have the same relationship with the EU as Norway or Switzerland. Norway is part / member of the EEA, another kind of union that is focused on trade solely, that is linked to the EU and gives them access to the single market. They accept the three freedoms and align with EU standards, rules and regulations. The UK refused to enter the EEA after Brexit (even though they were a founding member back in the day), main reason was, that the UK didn't want to accept the three freedoms and doesn't want to be "ruled" by EU standards, rules and regulations. Switzerland currently has the same status as Norway does, but it is not a member of the EEA either. They've achieved this by a ton of different agreements with the EU. This status is about to change slowly into a similar position as the UK currently has (or even worse, but it will propably take way more than a decade for them to get there), because Switzerland refused to accept a new agreement, that was meant to unite all of those hundreds of agreements into one and finally accepting the three freedoms, which was the reason they refused in the end. The UK doesn't have that close of a relationship with the EU right now. They have chosen to become an independent country with third country status, but added the TCA (trade and cooperation agreement) to avoid some of the most annoying trade barriers (no tariffs), but all non-tariff trade barriers are still there, due to them insisting on different standards in the UK. All countries with third country status abide to those rules when trading with the EU (like for example the USA, Russia, China), but not Norway nor Switzerland, because they currently don't have third country status.

While the UK was a member of the EU we had obtained a number of exemptions that allowed us to trade below EU standards. For example shellfish waters under EU regulations have to be of a certain standard, the UK had an exemption that allowed us to keep selling our shellfish providing we had plans in place to improve the standards of those waters. Once we left that exemption went and until we achieve the water quality standard our shellfish will not meet the required standards. There are many of these exemptions that have now gone and will be gone for good because if we decide that at some point we wish to re-join the EU we will have to meet their standards first. Brexiteers are like somebody who resigns from his local golf club because he doesn't like the way it is run and that the membership fees are to high. But then when he turns up to play discovers that not only does he have to join a queue but also has to pay higher green fees for the privilege of playing there. While waiting for a tee time he then goes to the clubhouse for a drink and discovers they won't let him in. He then stands in the car park complaining the golf club is been totally unreasonable and unfair and that it is all their fault. It's hardly surprising however as they were told that they could have their cake and eat it, some even said they could have a cherry on top. Sadly they believed the lies and they are not willing to face the consequences. As for trading with other countries outside of the EU there was a documentary on BBC's the Money Program well before the promise of a referendum was even made. The program was discussing why Germany and France were able to trade with China but that the UK struggled so much. A senior Chinese official was interviewed and asked that question. He replied "there is very, very little that the UK produces that we can't make ourselves cheaper, or can't buy elsewhere of better quality and/or cheaper." Trade deals do not mean trade and to trade you have to have something that is better or cheaper than your competitors. In the vast majority of cases that does not apply to UK products. To have better quality or more innovated products than others you have to invest heavily into Research and Development and the government have already said that the amount available will be limited.
