How to build the Hobbyzone Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m RTF

The Cub is a lot of fun! The AeroScout is actually easier to fly, but I prefer the look of the Cub. Karstan, my nephew who got the plane for Christmas/birthday, is pretty much flying it on his own after 3 flights. I am still there as instructor in case I need to make a correction, but he does 90% of the flight completely on his own.

So I picked up one of these yesterday the ready to fly model. But it does not have the battery or charger, so not sure why its called a RTF model. I had to purchase these separately, but in all fairness the salesman told me about it before I purchased the plane. I'm a little nervous about taking it out and start flying. Any suggestions for a brand new RC pilot?

Yes, RTF no longer includes battery and charger on larger size models. It is a silly new rule from the FAA as it tries to limit drone silliness and they consider RC planes as drones. The best suggestions would be to start by watching the How to Setup video that I did right after the assembly one. It goes over all the preflight setup and checks. Do all of those checks first. You could also purchase RealFlight Trainer Edition as that is what my nephew started on before his first flight. When you are ready to fly, look for a day with winds less than 5mph, which may be in the evening or early morning. Do a range check on the plane when you get to the spot where you will fly it. The instructions are in the manual for a range check. Do a final check to make sure all of you surfaces move correctly. Take off with the plane pointed in the wind. Use SAFE beginner mode! Don't let the plane get too far away from you as that makes it harder to see and orientate properly. You should cruise at 50% throttle and make gentle inputs on the sticks. You should not need to move the sticks much more than the diameter of a nickel or quarter from center. Practice making circles, then a rectangular racetrack, then a figure 8. Set a time for about 6 minutes and land when the times expires. Point the plane into the wind to land, pull back the throttle slowly to 25% as you approach the runway. At about 10 feet off the ground, go to 0% on the throttle and gently let the plane settle down to the ground. When in the air, if you want to gain altitude, add power. You want to get lower, reduce power. If you want to slow down, pull back on the elevator stick while reducing the throttle. If you want to climb, do the opposite. Most people forget to add power to climb and instead just pull back on the elevator, which makes them slow down, they don't see the plane going up, so they add more elevator, which makes them even slower, and then the plane stalls and crashes. Throttle controls altitude and the elevator controls air speed, which feels very backwards. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions.

Because you got the wrong model. The HBZ32000 comes with the DXS transmitter + 4x AA batteries, basic Spektrum charger and 3S 2200mah Spektrum smart battery. The HBZ320001 (which you purchased) comes with everything except the charger and battery. The latter option is the one most abundant right now. I know this because I almost fell into the same trap. The HBZ32000 was £35 cheaper and came with everything needed to fly. I initially thought that the Carbon Cub S2 in the HB320001 RTF package was an upgraded model hence the increase in price and less items included but Hobbyzone confirmed they are the exact same plane and specifications.

I noticed on mine, every set of screws has an extra screw.

Yes, most of the planes include an extra fastener in case you need a spare.

If it was the young guy’s plane, why didn’t you let him build it? He needs to learn these things.

Because he has zero experience with hand tools, the Cub isn't the easiest plane to assemble, and his mom was already messaging him upset that the video was taking too long. You can see him keep checking his watch because of the angry messages. It wasn't the time or place to try and teach him. It would have made the video 3x as long.

He’ll never learn if you don’t let him try. Holding his hand helps nothing. The fact is, it seems like you enjoyed it too much. He, on the other hand, looked extremely bored.

well he has parents and if his parents want to teach him mechanical skills, they can surely do so. Instead, the mom was very upset the process was taking too long and didn't want anymore time spent making the video. We had already filmed the unboxing video prior to the assembly. The kid has parents who are there to teach him, it isn't my responsibility to be the teacher. Or he will figure out things on his own, like I had to do. I would take things apart and put them back together to learn how they worked. I offered this winter to teach the kids how to work on their RC cars and the parents didn't want them wasting their time. I am not the parent and not responsible to teach. I have offered and the offer wasn't accepted.

Your Nephew looked bored. Maybe you could have trusted him more with a screwdriver so he was more of the building process.

yeah, we were super pressed for time during the video and it wasn't the right venue to teach him some basic hand tools. The assembly process took far longer than expected and it isn't the easiest plane to assemble.
