James Kalm is out on a foggy, drizzly Sunday afternoon to check out the latest offerings at some of the Lower East Side Galleries. The first stop is at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise and a glimpse at Brian Belott’s whimsical group of sculptures and paintings. Many of these works are engaged with technology though with a goofball primitive spin. Belott has an inventive use of found objects and color which he combines into inventive funky amalgams.
“Jane Dickson: Witness” at Steven Harvey is an intimate survey of work produced by the artist during the time she worked in a studio in Times Square in the late 1970s early 80s. Many of these scenes are nocturnal, painted on roughly textured black grounds, and capture pictures of this neighborhood and its denizens which have all but disappeared due to the pressures of gentrification and the more disturbing phenomena of Disney-afication.
Lastly we slip through “Holding Out For a Hero” the latest presentation of Paul Gagner at Freight+Volume. Gagner is a visual humorist, but never forgets his grounding as a painter. Pretentious art world snarks and the foibles of the artist’s life are a major target of this painterly provocateur. A musical introduction is provided by HaRi MiNT / harimint . This program was recorded December 2, 2018.

Thank you mr. Kalm for continuing to keepall of us art nuts isolated outside the NYC scene connected with your wonderful presentations. And when mentioning burnt work, let us not forget some of the creations of the great Alberto Burri.

What a treat. - up in this cold mountain evening - the color composition of Jane Dickson’s work is so enlightening I would never have seen her work if it weren’t for You James. I want to infuse a little essence of Paul Klee - just a tad, a connotation in any case. (Boy, I’m full of it tonight)

"Jane Dickson: Witness has all the magic of Renoir paintings but of course without as much detail as the master. Very nice to the point of fun. The painting "Support" seems to be a tribute to (modern) ballet dancing but in the streets of young NY adults atmosphere.

It looked like Brian had mounted many of those on cardboard, but I couldn't tell. I also wondered what he'd used in-between the mounting surface and the bottom surface. I looks like balls of plastic bags or maybe some type of plastic? Interesting stuff though. Some of those larger works looked like they were cutout mattresses reminding me of Rauschenberg's work. Jane Dickson got some nice textures out of her work. Thanks.

Really enjoy B Belott, however the electric components don't match up with the "crappiness" style.
