Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - 1988 Winter Games, Figure Skating, Men's Long Program - Brian Boitano won the Long Program in a 5-4 split vote of the judges, which in turn placed him 1st overall.

The best performance ever! He gave it everything he had, and what a passionate, entertaining performance. The American spirit is really in this performance, and I think that’s why everyone loves it so much. His long hair and military inspired outfit really adds to the triumphant power. If he’d had a crew cut and a white glittered suit, it wouldn’t have worked. The music was stupendous, and his outpour of emotion at the end is the most victorious of any performance to date. It still makes me angry that Brian B. only won by .1 point, especially since Boitano had a minor lead going into the long program. It just shows the corruption of the Olympics.😡 I was only 12 when I watched this live and couldn't understand why it was so close then. There's no way that it should've been that close. I'm not taking anything away from Brian Orser as a skater, but his performance was nowhere near as cleanly executed and as well choreographed. I also didn't care for Orser's red costume, and it was clear Orser was tired during the last part of his program. I understand why Orser would be tired. He had to wait to perform after Boitano's amazing performance. That nervous energy will wear you out, but that is ice skating. I rarely, if ever at the Olympics, have seen a whole package of choreography, costume, music, and execution come together as great as Boitano's did this night. There is a reason this performance has become iconic, and Orser's has not.

The choreography here was magnificent & I’m not a huge Sandra Bezic fan. But this is one of the most beautifully choreographed pieces I’ve ever seen. Two of my favorite moments of Brian’s performance were the huge smile in his last spin & then looking upward & giving the man upstairs thanks. After his short, I saw him mouth “Thank you, God.” Sweet.

Wow, poor Orser. Having to follow that performance with that kind of applause. He very nearly carried it off tho which speaks volumes about him as a skater. And what a coach. But back to Boitano. Those split jumps. A death drop so high I am sure there was a hole at the top of the Saddle Dome. The elegantly carved circle of that spread eagle. And we’re still not even close to talking about his jumps! What a performance. I still shake my head, 30 years later. And I still miss the refined Jim McKay, who became sports reporter turned serious news reporter in 1972 in Munich...covering that tragedy with his typical eloquent style.

Agree. You know, I do not know how some of these posters arrive at the conclusion that Orser was more artistic than Boitano. ON THIS NIGHT, Boitano had it all -- technically and artistically, musically and visually (costume). I thought Orser's music sounded almost like circus music. His red costume didn't appeal to me. With all due respect to Orser as a skater and artist, it just was not his night.

Well deserved. Its interesting how to this day Brian Orser thinks that he should have gotten gold. I looked at both programs- it was very obvious that Boitano should have won. Orser had 7 triples, Boitano had 8 triples which included 2 triples axel and a triple triple combo. Also- overall the packaging was better for this program. Anyways- this performance was awesome!!

Boitano was stiff and only won due to errors made by Orser. While it was a valid victory, throughout their careers, when Orser skated his best and Boitano skated his best, Boitano finished behind Orser 100 percent of the time. Boitano being victorious over Orser, always depended on an Orser error. If Orser skated clean, there was nothing Boitano could do to beat him.

If Orser could get a 6.0 from one of the judges, this deserved at least one 6.0, too. It was obvious they were leaving room for Orser since Boitano went first. I remember thinking that as a 12 year old, who was watching this at home. Seriously, a 5.7 in artistry from the Denmark judge.🤨

Well said! Boy, do I ever miss his heartfelt and informed commentary. I also miss ABC's coverage of these events. They did a wall-to-wall showing, unlike NBC's slice-and-dice coverage, peppered with commercials every few minutes, and leaving out the majority of the skaters. ABC covered Calgary live, while NBC covered Vancouver with their usual repackaged nightly coverage, leaving out all the lower groups, and selectively covering the rest. ABC had to cover all of each skating event in order to cover it live, and not slice and dice it with a skater here, a snowboarder there. In allowing us to see the early groups of skaters, we also were far more capable of appreciating the difference in the various levels of what was still Olympic level skating. But, I deeply miss Dick Button's commentary. His love of the sport was just utterly undeniable. I miss Scotty's commentary as well.

Great program. I believe Orser was stronger artistically; however, this program suited Boitano and his technique was superb. He was just so consistent with his jumping. During his early professional career, there was a time when he literally never missed a jump. He also kept himself in impeccable shape, a bit ahead of his time for fitness.

Probably not, his life would have taken a completely different path. I remember sitting in the family room at 12 years old with my mom and dad watching all the figure skating categories in 1988. Even my tough as nails, silent generation, farmer dad, was on the edge of his seat watching this. I'm sure he never would've admitted it, though, but I remember seeing him totally mesmerized. I don't remember being into a winter Olympics like that since. I don't know why, but I just can't get into them anymore. I guess I learned about the corruption involved in the Olympic organization, how the people of host cities are not helped, and all the doping scandals. I lost my naiveté and innocence after that, I suppose.

I remember this well just as if it had happened yesterday. That skate was so clean Orser had lost before he even stepped on the ice. Brilliant performance by Boitano. Simply brilliant.

Ah...I long for the day when figure skating was not just a jump fest. Boitano is by far my favorite figure skater of all time. Such a flare for the dramatic, so consistent and his attention to detail, body position and hand gestures is lost today. Canadian Brian Orser and Boitano were neck and neck. Orser skated a fairly clean program with only a slight bobble. To win the gold Boitano had to skate clean. Olympic gold on the line and he nails it. He was simply the best!!

Oh my - by the end you just want to stand up and cheer! I loved him so much. I kind of miss the 80s fashion too! Women looked different from each other then - now it just seems that everyone looks the same.

Какое великолепное выступление! Даже если сравнить с сегодняшними спортсменами. Какие таланты, были в пору моей молодости, я и не знала. Если бы не Алина Загитова, я бы не знала Орсера. А узнав Орсера, я узнала Бойтано, как интересно всё закручено. И интерес начался с маленькой Алины. Великая девочка!

I remember this so well and watching it over and over (we had it on VHS back then, so thanks for posting!) He was a teeeny bit better than Brian Orser, and just had so much heart in this. He's still great to this day :)

One of the greatest performances in Olympic history! He should have received all 6.0's for artistic presentation and technique. This was far better than Brian Orser.

I always remember this. My mom cooked early, cleaned on Saturday, made home mac and cheese, baked chicken and corn bread. My mom yelled yes! Watch T.V from the our apt in the Bronx , New York.
