Damn, if only Nikki viking-ed Lincolns spot in Munster that turned into a monastery and allowed him to expand. Great game. I got a copy of it but havent got a chance to play with friends yet so this scratches that itch.

I wish Nikki had put her monestary in Munster instead of Dublin. She would have snagged Munster back when she tied Lincoln for it (second round, I think). Would probably have been a much closer game in the end.

Great video and play through - I bought this game before the video came out and delighted to see you play it and enjoy it. Coming from Cork myself I was happily surprised to hear Dave reference the county :) it’s a dynamic game which you need to keep an eye on many things a lot! Niceto see Mark back on also. Keeps up the great video content 👍 I think the art work is from an Irish artist Deirdre de Barra who I think has a webcomic set in those times.

Recently bough and played this game. Loved it. I especially like how you have to make do with the hand you got, making tough decisions at times.

Great playthrough as usual! I haven't played, but now I really want to give it a whirl! I think Nikki really had a shot, believe it or not! In the last action phase of round 2, I thought she was going to chain up in Ulaid, which would have secured the Ulaid tile and 4 points. Then place her monastery in Munster, which would have secured the Munster tile and 7 points. Instead of having the 2 points for Dubhlinn, she would have had 11 points and been in a really good place going into the final 2 rounds. Of course, who knows how things would have panned out in the end...

Post game discussion wise, I totally see what you guys are saying. There is a challenge getting stuff on the board when people choose to go to a, let's say, yellow city, and you don't have a good yellow card...so it can lead to a turn or two where it doesn't seem like you can get a town under your control...and that can be very detrimental in end-game scoring because presence on the board is points and controlling different areas can be a lot of points...Lincoln got a LOT of end game points from controlling regions. The semi-randomness of card acquisitions, it can be a challenge in that one aspect of the game. I think everyone has plenty of opportunities to get vikings or church or woo-ing the maidens...but getting a piece on the board is either heavily card-dependent...OR requires you to spend a lot of money to do it using roads...but as was stated, money is pretty tight. Interesting game though. Thumbs up!

The one coins are so tiny, and money is so tight, I just use the five coins as ones and leave the one coins in the box.

Thanks for the playthrough! Brian Boru has pretty quickly become one of my favourite games and I actually wrote a review if it on a Finnish boardgame site, Lautapeliopas (the review can also be found on BGG but it's in Finnish so..). I've now played Brian Boru seven times and I think I've gotten some new aspects out of it with every play. I have one question, though. During the church step in the first round you guys had a tie for the most tokens in the church area so you skipped the first phase rewards (aka a monastery and the active player token). But you still gave the reward for the second phase (aka one point) for the same players you checked on for the first phase. I might be wrong but I've understood it so that if there's a tie for the first phase and no other players are present in the church area, you don't check for the second phase. Am I wrong or have I missed something in the rules? I don't remember how it was exactly said in the rules.

When Nikki chose the Viking placement, I thought it was a massive mistake to put them in Ulaid instead of Munster, given the points at stake. Sure enough, Lincoln ended up yoinking Munster out from under her. Presumably that would have had other consequences, but if somehow everything else stayed the same... Nikki would have won if Munster was under her control instead of Lincoln's.
