Patrik Stephan was the number one pick. One of the best hockey facts ever involves Stephan. He missed an epic empty net goal against the Oilers while playing with the Dallas Stars (look it up). That single point caused the Oilers to finish 2nd last in the league which made them lose the #1 pick in the draft that year. That #1 was Patrick Kane (Stanley Cup winner). So if Pat Stephan scored that empty netter, Patrick Kane would have been an Oiler.

First, some corrections: 1. Oilers did not finish 2nd last in the league in 2006-07. That'd be Phoenix with 67 points. 2. Oilers finished even with Chicago on points, but their better goal differential put them ahead in season rankings. Chicago would end up picking 5th overall and Oilers 6th overall. 3. Chicago won the lottery to move up to #1 to pick Kane. Would Oilers have won the lottery had they finished at #5 instead of #6? Maybe, maybe not. It's a lottery. Then again, they could have won the lottery that year and ended up with Kane at #2, assuming Philly picked 1st and JvR instead of Kane. Lots of hypothetical here. I'd worry more about the three (okay, two, cos Hall is a good pick, but Seguin is better) straight 1st overalls that landed the Oilers RNH and Yakupov instead of vastly better players.

I've had the pleasure of meeting both Burke and Gradin. Burke way back in 2000-01 at a Seattle Thunderbirds game where I had him sign my ticket, lol. Then Gradin a couple years ago at the Everett WHL pre-season tourney. I spotted his Canucks jacket, asked him if he worked for them, and we started talking, and he eventually revealed his name. He was humble enough not to say "I found the Sedins".

growing up in vancouver watching the sedins get picked and then watched them throughout their entire careers i get so much nostalgia. they are some of the best people in the world, and are very different from the usual hockey mould, which a lot of haters discredit them for not being tough enough. The season tortorella coached in vancouver was an interesting experiment, because i think rarely does tortorella find no fault in a superstar particularly with their attitudes/work ethic, but he only had great things to say about the sedins. i feel bad for them that they weren't able to win the cup - i would argue they deserve it as much as any player ever in the league.

I was a timekeeper at Burnaby Winter Club for a couple of years, dating a hockey player and whatever - Ryan Beech, the younger brother of Kris Beech, played in a group I looked after - Kris showed up just to skate with his brother one day? Great interview, still not completely clear how Burkie fanagled it but I will do some more research. The one thing I would ask Burke or anyone now is considering how important high first round picks are now in 2018 could a deal like this ever even be done now? Going back 18 years, draft picks weren't coveted like they are now, would a team be prepared to deal away a lot of players to make a deal for twins like that now?

He kind of hits on it in the interview, admitting that at the time it was a very risky move to trade Bryan mcCabe, a blue chip young d man who was a centerpiece to the Trevor Linden trade the previous year, AND a first rounder to chicago before even moving up to number 1.. I remember in a past interview him saying if he didn't have the extra first round pick from the Bure trade he likely would not have pulled it off.

How do you still not know how this was done? He explains it. Vancouver was always picking 3rd already. They traded Mccabe and a future 1st for Chicago's 4th over all pick. Canucks now have 3 and 4. They traded the 4th overall and 2 3rd round picks for the 1st over all pick. Now the Canucks have 1 and 3. They then traded 1 to Atlanta for a 3rd round pick and 2nd over all and the condition that Atlanta does not take a Sedin.

Whats up with those career points at 2:10 The Sedins are hall of famers no doubt about that but what happened to the other players in the top 7. To be honest i dont watch hockey other then national tournaments so maybe this is commen. But did the other players get injured or whats up with there low career points. Tim Connolly with 431 points i would think isent bad but what about the rest of them? The number 1 pick with only 188 career points dosent sound like a first round pick and u got 3 of the top 7 with less then 100 points. Is this common or were these players just over hyped and when it came down to it they couldent perform in the NHL. EDIT: Okey Patrik Stefan hade a concussion problem that makes sense then for him atleast.

Imo olympic gold or best on best international play such as world cup ect.. ( best on best tho ) is just as important as a stanley cup. No matter how you try to break it down. I know stanley cup is a grind and is harder to win but olympic competition is absolute best on best there are no bad players there. I don't think it's fair to say Henrik is better than Daniel. Daniel has every bit as much playmaking and passing ability as Henrik, equal puck skills, and a better shot. Henrik plays a more important position that allows him to distribute the puck more. It's Daniel's shooting ability against Henrik's position, and I think it's close. Plus although the Sedins aren't exactly nasty, Daniel does have a little bit more "edge" to his game. I think Daniel still putting up similar totals to Henrik despite missing games and getting his brains scrambled should highlight that he's every bit as good as Henrik and potentially better, but it's so close it's really not worth arguing one against the other. Honestly one of the most interesting things about the twins is how unbelievably comparable they as as players, identical on and off the ice.

Ryan Trylsson That is true but Daniel has an disadvantage when using that point. Henrik *may* have struggle less since no matter what he has played with a winger who is not Daniel. Daniel has always had his center be Henrik. Positions don’t matter that much in the offensive zone as cycling is the norm now and centers are in the corners just as much but there would be some relativity with what position was missed.

BoeserForCalder was quite complicated but basically went like this: VAN had 3rd OA, they traded McCabe + 2000 1st rd pick to CHI for CHI's 4th OA. TBL held the 1st OA and ATL held 2nd OA. VAN traded their 4th OA + a couple of late rd picks to TBL and got TBL's #1 pick. They now have picks 1 and 3, they then traded down with ATL with the only condition that ATL would draft Stefan. That's how they got 2nd and 3rd OA.

I love that Burke said what he did about the Stanley Cup stigma for a players legacy. However, I have to say that I think he's in the minority with his opinion. Look at the difference in perspective and respect that Ovechkin received from the years just before winning the cup and then immediately after finally winning the cup. I'm not saying anyone thought he wasn't a first ballot HOFmer, but his overall legacy was saved in 2018. Or look at Toews being named to the NHL's top 100 list. Now he's a great player and leader too, but when considering his individual achievements/awards along with his stats, do you really think he'd have even been considered for that list of he wasn't the captain of a 3-time championship team?
