The first time I saw him on the tele I thought "what an insecure, man." It was something about the way he speaks that bugged me. Now, however, I find exactly that the cause for my appreciating of him: he speaks eloquently, calmly, and always as if it's been written and practiced beforehand. (Obviously this speech was, but I mean in general: any talk- or panel show he visits, he speaks clearly and interestingly.) My respect grows with every footage of this man I view.

I'm not talking about either; Brian said that the Higgs field, which occupies all of space, contains about 10 to the 37 joules of energy per cubic meter...that's not "too small"; 10 to the 37 joules is a lot of energy, especially per cubic meter...no matter what the source (it would still be a lot even if it were from microwave background radiation). You're not wrong to say the energy from background radiation is too small, though, but I just wasn't talking about that.

When I was younger, a wonderful 'yooman' by the given name of Carl Sagan captivated me. We lost him too soon, but thank goodness we still have another 'yooman' that has that same wonderous way of explaining incredibly complex things in a manner that can enthuse those of us that do not have the mathematical skills required to be scientists but really wish we had. I was raised a fundamentalist christian and was forced into a faith school when I started asking basic questions about obviously flawed notions. Science will be incredibly likely to change in the next few decades, and the next few that follows and this is nothing negative or surprising. We adapt to the best existing evidence without making facual claims of the unknown. If you can seperate your claim from an invented claim by evidence or logic please share it with the world.

I enjoyed this speech and agree with most of what he said, although I think that the statistics about tertiary education that he cited are totally irrelevant. If the life expectancy of people with tertiary education is higher, I expect that has a lot to do with their lifestyle (job, income, etc) when compared to less educated people who earn less doing physically more exhausting or dangerous jobs. While it's good to promote science, "ordinary" people and jobs are just as important to society.

They are just 2 different types of things, theory meaning more explanation and law more description. For instance gravity is NOT a theory. There are theories of gravity, and there are laws of gravity. However our current most accurate model of gravity is a theory of gravity, whereas we have laws of gravity which we know are incorrect.

the way RE is taught in early education resembles basic philosophy and ethics. these ideas are very good for developing empathetic minds. I do agree that some parts of the courses should be toned down but in general RE is still a good thing for young people.

Children and students are taught nothing about politics then thrown into a world run by politicians.. I don't think RE is up there in terms of life skills. In my opinion basic science should be taught then that can branch off to what field of science you would like to learn physics, chemistry, zoology etc .. People learn about RE whilst studying science so i think a whole lesson on religious education is unnecessary.

Global warming is more pronounced at the poles, so a one degree increase over the planet may result in a 4 or 5 degree increase at the poles. While the temp near the equator stays roughly the same. Some regions may get colder as a result of global warming, as melting polar ice results in desalination affecting warm water currents in the oceans. I don't know for a fact the planet is/isn't warming. But isn't it better to do something about it than not. If we're fussing over nothing then so be it.

Or it could've been that whatever the real doctor was giving you was just having a bad effect. A problem with the alternative medicine crowd is they tend to point to flaws in scientific medicine as somehow a support for their own beliefs. Doctors are human and they often get things wrong. But the whole point about the scientific community is that over time it does self-correct itself and make progress. Whereas homeopathy is the same as it was 150 years ago.

Those things simply raise questions about the mechanics of the thing, there is absolutely no doubt in the process of evolution. For example, we didn't evolve from rhesus monkeys, we share a common ancestor with them, there's a massive difference. Also we understand mitochondrial DNA quite well and I've never once heard it used as a refutation of evolution, in fact, it's evidence of the very thing.

If you doubt evolution, you have to doubt everything else in science too, because the theories are developed and proven in the same ways. That includes quantum theory, people applied to create all computers, the biochemistry which people apply to create medicines, and the idea that the Earth orbits the sun. Just to clear up the terminology, neither "the theory of evolution" no "quantum theory" refer to "just one of many unproven theories". It is a different way of using the word.
