This is the first in a series of videos presenting the salutations of celebrities on the occasion of what would have been Fela's 75th birthday. Also on this day, 15th October, Knitting Factory Records are releasing Red Hot + Fela, a compilation album featuring interpretations of Fela songs by a raft of top drawer artists. All profits from this album go towards combatting AIDS.
Brian Eno, producer, thinker, conceptual artist and lifelong Fela fan has contributed this salutory message, talking about how encountering Fela's music changed his life.
Red Hot is an AIDS awareness organisation currently partnering with Knitting Factory Records to present a collection of cross-genre collaborations representing rock, hip-hop, Americana, and classical for an album release of Fela Kuti compositions, 'RED HOT + FELA' (Knitting Factory, 15 October 2013). The release includes classic Fela anthems like "Lady" recorded by tUnE-yArDs, ?uestlove (The Roots), Angelique Kidjo and Akua Naru, "Zombie" recorded by Spoek Mathambo, Cerebral Cortex and Frown, "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" recorded by My Morning Jacket, Merrill Garbus (from tUnE-yArDs), and Brittany Howard (from Alabama Shakes) and "Sorrow, Tears & Blood" reworked by the Kronos Quartet along with TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adembimpe.

You put it all together, Phil. Indeed, Eno produced Remain in Light and undoubtedly was drawing some inspiration from Fela Kuti. Remain in Light is probably my favorite TH album, now I know why!

I totally agree with you, "Jazz from another planet." I can turn it around and say Fela introduced me to Jazz music. I started listening to Fela since I was 7. And because of Fela, I now play a lot of Jazz music because some sounds like Fela. Fela was spectacular just like every other great Jazz musicians out there. Long leave Fela, his music and his ideologies.

Fela never needed the white man's credit. He was a God living among men. Black artists should emulate Fela. Blacks do not need the credit or acceptance of whites before they know they are great. Fela was a God on earth.
