aint that the truth. when i was in 4th grade, we had this sort of class preview, meet the teacher type thing before school. My mom noticed a boy sitting by himself with his head in hands. She had me go introduce myself to him. his name was simon, and he had just moved to the midwest from california. He hadn't met anyone yet. Come the school year, we had become friends. him, me, and our friend Neil had become an inseparable trio. Flash foward to high school and we were closer than ever. Climbing up abandoned buildings and walking around at night to smoke weed, we were best friends. My sophomore or maybe junior year, Simon introduced me to brian fallon; he had been introduced to him from his older brother and the gaslight anthem. I heard "smoke", and immediately fell in love. brian fallon was absolutely my favorite artist. his relatable lyrics, raw vocals, and gorgeous instrumentals had taken me by storm. the summer before my senior year of high school, I had started talking to this girl named ava. We had gotten pretty close and a relationship was forming. that summer I took her to a party at the house of neil, where she decided she liked neil more than me. neil said he was not going to date this girl that had been brought to his party by his best friend. I was rather upset, having talked to this girl for months, only for her to decide she doesn't like me anymore. A few months later, She had began dating simon, whom she had met at the party. Simon and I remained friends. we had classes together senior year and even worked together once covid hit and school was cancelled. I still talk and hang out with neil regularly, but i haven't heard from simon in over a year, not for lack of trying. I'm a little drunk rn so I'm sorry for the rant, its just hard to listen to brian without thinking about simon. We used to be so close. I miss him, and I don't know what I've done to upset him. I hope he's doing okay.

Nobody gives Alex enough credit on this song. His keyboard fits so well into Ian's slide playing that they sometimes are hard to differentiate, but the space would feel much emptier without. Beautifully haunting.

Old ass comment to reply to but I remember watching just Alex in Toronto during their 59 Sound reunion and realizing that second to Brian's songwriting, it's Alex's musicianship that forms the soul of TGAs sound. It's why Brian's solo stuff sounds a little different, Alex adds a darkness and curiousity, and explorative quality, to Brian's structured storylines. That sound is what makes TGA sound how it does. They're all musicians in their own right

I learned how to hammer, In the burning August sun, I learned how to lie and cheat, How to steal and just how to run, I fell asleep most nights, Somebody elses blood on my tongue, your tongue, You learn just how to run. But It's just the blues, Mary the blues Swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes, I'm somewhere over the rainbow for you. I learned how to cry, In them lonesome September nights, I learned to get by, With the dogs and the dirt and the charm of the street I fell asleep most nights, With your pictures right behind my eyes, your eyes, The killer and the victim, Right at the same time. But It's just the blues, Mary the blues Swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes, I'm somewhere over the rainbow for you, But It's just the blues, Mary the blues Swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes, I'm somewhere over the rainbow for you. And cause your smile, Is bright like the ramparts on the 4th of july, And my baby swings like a boxer, And sends her right hooks under my chin, She crys like a baby, And she wears me just like a ring, Crys like a baby, And she wears me just like a ring. I'd rather go then watch you leave I learned how to swagger, I learnd how to hold you while your body burn, I learned how to compromise, While this world went hurrciane turn, We fell asleep most nights, With each others blood on our tongues, My love, Have you ever just had enough? But It's just the blues, Mary the blues Swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes, I'm somewhere over the rainbow for you, And It's just the blues, Mary the blues Swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes, I'm somewhere over the rainbow for you. And It's just the blues, Mary the blues, Swirling around my head like your dreams in Dorothy's shoes, I'm somewhere over the rainbow for you.
