I remember Brian from a Sunset Sound documentary about the recording of the first Van Halen album. Super interesting Colleen. Thanks.

Ive watched all of your videos and somehow missed this gem. Just completed the entire video and its one of my favorite interviews you've done. I grew up in the tape error and so cool hearing the stories. What an honor to get to listen to all the old WB vault tapes. Great job!!

About 12 years ago, a co-worker brought a box of those small reel-to-reel tapes to my home studio to do digital transfers. They were of his uncle and family during the Vietnam war, sending the tapes back and forth with messages on them. Some going overseas were of his kids singing in the choir, his wife updating him on what was going on at home, etc. In "payment" for my services, my co-worker bought me the 3 DVD 40th anniversary Woodstock Director's Cut box set. I was able to recover everything on the 50+ year old tapes, applying a little EQ or de-essing to clean them up a bit.

I knew you were gonna say it was a tape from Vietnam! Seriously, I did not see the second sentence as I read the first! Somewhere I have a wire recording from an atom bomb test…

Brian Kehew is personally responsible for me getting into modular synthesizers and his work with Moog resulted in a Model 10 that I proudly have in my studio. I can't wait to see what he ends up publishing.

Such a great interview! I walked past that area of North Hollywood many times. Are used to housesit in that area when I was working on feature films in concert shoots, all 35 mm. I really enjoyed this interview, I actually just learned about Brian because he had presented a lecture about the legendary Korla Pandit, organist. Based on this video I would love to throw some transfer and other tape work to Brian or people he could have her reach you, sounds like he’s very busy with Books and publishing besides his own tape projects. Singer of analog tapes, I did college radio for a few years mostly jazz Latin and bossa nova and I recorded every single one of my shows on cassette tape. Someday I’m going to mix those down to a reasonable boxout, leaving in just a few of the public service announcements and station IDs but it’s a great mix of music and it makes me feel proud of myself for having started collecting that type of music on vinyl and tape over 4 decades ago. Over most of my film production work has been location scouting, second A.D., camera department and lighting had several gigs where I was mixing with a classic Nagra analog tape recorder and using a big boom mic. One of those challenging on location shoots was doing a 16 mm film with the great Harrod Blank out at the burning man festival for many years. Wind dust and extreme heat, quite challenging for old-school film making an audio recording, but that’s OK we got the best quality possible while everyone else was using their little GoPro cameras. Hard work like that on location, it builds character.. I’m hoping that Brian will do more talks on Korla Pandit perhaps down in Orange County or San Diego this year. Best wishes and thanks for a great video series!

Brian, your passion and intelligence is a pleasure to witness! Love your love of analog and also salvaging and appreciating historical cracked vinyl chairs that would have ended up in a dumpster. Thanks to Fazio Electric from here in Beacon, NY!

I used to rent that exact studio in North Hollywood 10+ years ago. One day Robbie Krieger of The Doors walked in the back door with the landlord. Robbie was looking for a studio to purchase, he chatted and signed some guitars for us. The valley is the place to be!

Well done interesting interview, always enjoy hearing Brian. I have several vintage reel to reel decks to transfer 1/4” with speed from 1 7/8 to 15, mono to 4 track. Have had tapes that started 3 3/4 but changed mid tape to 1 7/8. 🙂 at least the person said changing speeds on the recording. Had one labeled stereo which it kind of was but was a two track recording, narration on left effects on right. Outputted as “ stereo” and mono mix. 😊then there are the reel to reels recorded on recorders that did not have constant speed 🙂

Once again, another awesome interview!! So many "amp people" these days doing 2 and 3 hour live stream interviews/Q&A videos.....everybody interviewing each other and answering the same questions over and over. It's become so 'Ho-Hum'. Your interviews are always so genuine and personal. Very refreshing!!! You're quickly becoming my favorite "amp person", right behind Uncle Doug!!

2:14 Aww, man. This. Lol I had a 4 track when I was a kid and I sucked at using it. Then I wound up on Logic and Abelton and had near limitless control and tracks. I’ve recently been treating the computer like a tape machine and limiting my tracks to like 12. For one thing, it forces you to actually have a song 😂. You’re not gonna fix the non-song in post by piling stuff on top of it. And you have to write good parts. If I can’t record a band on 12 tracks, I don’t need to be recording. 😂

I find it interesting that the interview was edited so that we don't hear what exactly was the hoped-for or planned outcome of listening to old Eagles tapes. Is somebody afraid of being sued by Don Henley? Man, that guy is just a major league arsehole....
