For the cleaning of the tolex, I've personally been converted to car interior cleaning products, they usually work very well, and are readily available...

Although I didn't see any obvious work done inside the amplifier it looked all like all of the original "clutch drive" screws have been removed and changed to Philip's screws so it would seem that somebody had been in there before. Clutch drive screws have a socket head shaped sort of like an hour glass......

2:32 Dear child! Use tweezers instead of pliers! )))). You can insulate it with heat shrink tubing. It's more convenient than pliers!

Warning. DO NOT SOLDER A GROUND WIRE TO A CHASSIS UNLESS A EQUIPMENT IS FITTED WITH A MAINS TRANSFORMER, THE TRANSFORMER WILL PROVIDE SAFE ISOLATION
@goodun2974Сағат бұрын
If this was an AC-DC transformerless circuit, I'm sure that Colleen would add an isolation transformer to the input AC power. Ampeg never made such a thing, however.
@AICD19998 сағат бұрын
So why not screw that ground into the amp chassis instead of soldering it? Without the death cap that would seem to be the best for longevity.
@goodun2974Сағат бұрын
Only if there's an unused hole in the chassie in an appropriate spot. We techs prefer not to drill holes in vintage amplifiers if we can help it. Anyway, a good solder joint is less likely to lose connection to the chassis; but bolts can loosen from vibration.

"You call that a soldering iron?" [Colleen draws her huge tool, 250W or the like] "THIS... is a soldering iron." Nice job on that amp. I'm firmly in favor of recapping - no argument about "vintage tone", "mojo" etc. is gonna convince me to leave potentially leaky caps that will throw the bias off and kill the tubes.

Wait, you mean it's possible to have an amp repair channel on KZbin without constantly bitching about every single design choice and the fact that you have to do your job? No drama? No bullshit? Shocking.

Nice to see another repair video. I have a question that hopefully someone can answer… why is it called the “death cap”.

I would have loaned a Stratocaster to a pretty serious lady friend musician but come to find out on her tour something happened and all the guitars were knocked over and the headstock broke off of one , I'm glad that she did not borrow my guitar .

I have a 63 Jet. Ampegs of this era were built solid and sound great. And you gotta love those clutch head screws.

I didn't notice any clutch head screws. It appeared to me they'd all been changed out for Phillips screws.

I have a Reverberocket 2, but have been looking for an original Rocket or Reverberocket with those 6V6’s. The originals break up much earlier than the 2’s do. The 2’s have gorgeous creamy, clean tones. One of each is ideal, imo.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, Colleen ! 🎄🎅From your faithful Canadian fan boy supporter in Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦
@jeremyb712823 сағат бұрын
well i came to this vid on the year stated of the amp. im all most 100% certain that musicman went to the solid state driver board in mid 75 phasing them in and fully in 76. along with the badge color flip change. i have a late 75-76 with the same black on silver badges but mine has the db1 driver board. those was put in place of the 12ax7 so that if something happened to the output side, like the phase tube or so went out, then you wouldnt fry the out put trans and tubes. im looking for a better quality schematic for these as my eyes are getting tired. any help with a good set would be great. my hd130 has developed a reverb issue thats annoying to say.

Ah, yes, one of Ken Fischer’s favorite amps was the reverb rocket. One of his Trainwreck creations was a Rocket, that is lower gain than the Express based on the AC30. I built one, including the cabinet and even wood burned a rose and some heather on the face plate. I then stamped it on the chassis, named after my wife, Heather Rose. Continued the “serial number” of girls names that Ken used. Best sounding head I own.
