Brian Kelly Is NOT The One Who Should Be Talking About "Not Buying Players," ACC Post Spring Ranking

In response to a question about LSU’s trouble in landing defensive linemen in the transfer portal, head coach Brian Kelly said the Tigers are “not in the market of buying players.” Interesting words from a coach making $95 million guaranteed on his contract. If any coach in major college football should be saying something like this, it should be Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. Clemson does not take any transfers. Why is Kelly pandering to the anti-NIL crowd?

I don't know if I agree with Kenton that your portal guys should have multiple years of eligibility. I say that because your 4 and 5 star recruits are going to wonder where their playing time went. So it's more nuanced to me as far as your position needs. In some cases, you need a portal guy to be a good bridge who fills a position need while that 5 star freshman red shirts and develops. You just don't want to drive your best recruits into the portal, too! I agree that the portal can negatively impact the locker room and culture. Also agreed that your qb should likely come by way of recruiting rather than the portal. You can't have a rental at qb year after year because you never build an offensive identity. I believe it's going to take some coaches a couple of years to learn how best to use the portal. Their roster is going to change and evolve, constantly. Throw NIL in there, and roster management has become much more complex, and as I said, nuanced.

It's funny how the old guard of the SEC is so mad about other teams finally getting the chance to pay players like they've been doing in creative ways since their 2008 multi billion dollar TV deal. It's funny because it's a bunch of rich old white men complaining that a bunch of kids would dare to ask to be paid in an era where they see coaches making $10+ million, college presidents making $50+ million, and the sport as a whole recently surpassed the $1 billion mark. The SEC and B1G were so concerned about other conferences having teams who could use NIL to potentially cut the gap in TV revenue that they just bought entire schools. But let's talk about teams buying players.

Here it is again, the rant of a casual. - The SEC & Big 10 teams were the programs that staked out the under-the-table, pre-NIL recruiting 'bag' market ALONE. Casual. - The problem is a bunch of greedy "rich old white men" who don't want to pay players on their own team, nor do they want other teams to be able to do the same. Never mind that those donors are giving their own money hand over fist and don't HAVE TO give a dime. But you're sure going to take the money from the rich old white men who support YOUR team's collective. Casual. - Those same rich old white men from SEC and Big 10 programs "bought entire schools" to ensure other teams couldn't close the gap on tv deals through NIL. 1. Those conferences already had bigger tv deals, pre-NIL, because it's better football and those are larger fan bases. It's a free market, and the eye balls choose to watch THOSE games, period. 2. Those teams that moved to those conferences did so because they CHOSE to move to a conference that could ensure better tv revenue. I believe their share is less the 1st couple years. Those conferences accepted them because they believed those programs will move the needle on future tv deals. The SEC and Big 10 didn't 'buy entire schools' to deny other programs improved tv deals. I'd like to see a school by school breakdown of what the SEC "bought" Texas for, what they bought Oklahoma for. The Big 10, what did they buy Oregon for, USC, UCLA, etc.? 🙄 Casual - An 18 year old unproven HS recruit isn't owed millions because a 45 year old proven college head coach is paid $10 million or a university president with a decades long career, who earned his way up the academia career ladder is paid $50 million. NIL is a market, and individual players will be compensated for what they are worth. Casual. So before you crap on those rich old white men, understand they are who are driving that market and paying players. Ultimately, that market will hit a ceiling, resulting in a salary cap within whatever structure CFB finally emerges. Are you contributing to the Collective at your school?
