Buddy holly was a very talented man, his format of playing a guitar was off the charts. He wrote so many songs. He accomplished so much in what little time he had on earth. Unreal...

Crazy to see a legend like Brian turn into a total fanboy while talking about Buddy, just goes to show how influential he was.

You know when someone like Brain May is impressed with Buddy Holly's guitar work, there was a special kind of magic to his playing that influenced 100's of guitarist into the 1960's and beyond. All of Buddy Holly's talent still resonates today when you start to break it all down.

Everyone talks about Elvis, but Buddy Holly does not get enough credit for starting rock and roll. He wrote his own beautifully crafted perfect pop/rock songs. Loved his stuff. The Beatles loved him. As did Dylan and Robbie Robertson. It's a shame he left us so young, but what a legacy he left us.

@@xpat73 No problem. I’m just saying that Elvis was apparently the reason Buddy Holly ventured into R‘n‘R. Buddy did a great version of Baby I Don’t Care. As for Elvis not writing his own songs (except for one), that doesn’t make him less of an artist to me. I love Buddy Holly.

Buddy's contribution to music can never be overstated. Nothing sounded quite like him before or since. He was making record in 1956-58 that would fit right on a mid 1960s Beatles record. I get goosebumps listing to his records and think how much more music would work have had if he did not die so young.

Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the first band to have a hard and fast, guitar driven teenage garage rock sound. So vital to what inspired the 60’s musicians. Buddy Holly and Bo Diddley were the idols of the 60’s musicians when it comes to composition and style. Arguably there were proto psychedelic songs from Buddy and Bo. True icons.

can you give some examples of proto psychedelic songs by these two?
@mcbillygoat
@mcbillygoat 3 жыл бұрын
One could argue that Bo Diddley’s Song “Bo Diddley” was proto psychedelic along with Buddy Holly’s song “Peggy Sue:” Very subtle engineering to create a more futuristic sound. Joe Meeks was keen on these sounds and helped to shape proto psychedelic songs as well.

@@JohnSmith-ij6ms I don't buy it, unless you define "proto psychedelic" in a way that also fits categories like Rockabilly or Blues. When Holly was first recording, songs like "Down the Line" and "Rockin' with Ollie Vee" were rockabilly -- played a million miles an hour with jangling guitars. Compare that to the stuff released after his death, like "Well All Right," which suggests folk or grunge with this quiet, intimate, brooding quality. Meanwhile Bo Diddley did all sorts of weird, otherworldly songs like "Who Do You Love" that could have been covered by a psych band, but they were really just electric blues. In some ways Bo was more Latin than psychedelic.

I was and still am a Buddy fan, I'm 76 now but I too remember the guitar playing of Buddy, it was that as well as his voice that captivated me back then when I was around 15-16. Even today artists are still singing Buddy's songs, he was truly a legend.

This brings it all back. I was 16 years old at the time, and every Saturday evening I'd watch a BBC TV programme, The 6-5 Special, which was trying hard to latch on to the new rock-'n'-roll craze. Part of the format was to play (audio only) three of the latest American record releases. On the night in question That'll Be The Day was played, and my jaw must have dropped; we'd never heard anything like it before. I'll bet that the boys who became the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Hollies, etc were watching that programme, with a similar reaction.

I'd love to sit and talk Buddy Holly with Brian May. He totally GETS Buddy Holly. I do too. I've been to Lubbock, his home town and even just going there, you can feel and understand him more and what he was about. Maybe Baby was recorded at Reese Airforce Base, near Oklahoma City.

The first music that captivated me as a kid was Buddy Holly. Then it was The Beatles, then it was Queen, and then so much more after that. The magical quality of music seemed to die off in the 90s though. Good songwriting largely came to a halt.
