The so-called Japanese eye dropper was invented in 1905 by George Sweetser and sold to De La Rue, a British company then primarily a printer with an emerging business in stylographs. The invention was for a combination of plunger filler and ink shut-off valve. The resulting pen was called the Onoto. De La Rue entered the export markets with the Onoto including taking the pen to Japan. The Japanese were not fond of the plunger filler but took to the ink shut-off valve, using it in eye droppers, which were popular in Japan long after that market dwindled in the west. If some people here are not familiar with the British origins of the plunger with ink-shut off, it's because De La Rue's attempts to sell into the American markets, which they tried to do twice, were rebuffed. Also, AFAIK, it would not be until the Pilot 823 that the combination of plunger filler and ink shut-off would finally be reunited in Japan. Note that the revived company is called Onoto because De La Rue still exists albeit not in the pen business, which they exited in 1958. Also, the early date of the ink shut-off means it is not related to air travel as many people believe. Interestingly, Sweetser seems to have initially invented the valve to help in flushing the pen, "As it would be difficult to change the ink or wash out the pen by this arrangement, I sometimes employ a valve to allow the ink to pass from the top of the piston ..." From British patent 13768, 1905. This assumes that the user should be able to remove the nib and feed himself. Pilot thinks otherwise.

My deepest thanks for keeping this corner of the netscape(from someone old enough to remember Netscape with a capital N) interesting and wholesome. This new hobby clicked for me like the cap of a Diplomat Aero. A question/challenge for you: What would be your Walden pen? Let me set the scene: You're going full Thoreau with this, spending a year in a cabin in the woods to finish your great novel/autobiography. You're choosing one pen and type of paper/notebook to use for this purpose, with no other devices like smartphones, TVs or laptops available. In the spirit of "front only the essential facts of life" and to make sure your Great Pen-merican novel makes the deadline, you are only allowed three inks and three hammers(keeping things fair). Assume you will have enough of all writing- and survival-related resources to last the year. Also...in light of this episode and others, the Lamy 2000 is disallowed... Keep being nobody but yourselves and hope you're doing well, from a Swedish convert to the faith of fountain pens!
@judyjacobs58276 ай бұрын
Thoreau was not the isolated woodsman/survivalist you describe. He had his laundry done by the folks at home (probably by servants), made regular trips to town for beer night with his pals. Many of the modern conveniences we take for granted were not yet available, so living without them in the cabin was no sacrifice. Had he had electricity and amplifiers, Hank and the guys visiting him at the pond might have been rehearsing and jamming with their rock band. And he was supported by the family business. They made pencils. Hank always had pencils with him. The fountain pen had not yet become generally available. Just saying.

I would just add for some folks, the smoothness of a Pilot stainless steel M nib (or even F if a thin line is required) can be life-changing. So I recommend Kakuno to folks. If they use the included cartridge they won't get ink on their hands. Preppy's are great but it can be hard to get the ink flowing at first. I hate Pilot Varsity for a bunch of reasons but admit they are great writers.

I think the modern acrylic versions of the old geometric celluloids are completely missing the point when it comes to what made those old celluloids so beautiful, and that is how they play with translucency. If you look closely at stacked celluloid with a loupe for instance, you'll notice it doesn't actually consist of alternating black and pearlescent layers. It is alternating between *clear* and pearlescent coloured layers, with wafer thin layers of black separating them. This means the clear parts let more or less light through depending on how you tilt the pen in the light, and the coloured layers shift in reflectivity due to the pearlescence when you turn the pen. So no matter how you move the pen, it's always dancing in the light in some way or another. Arco and Spina celluloid recreations always seem to miss the point that the coloured layer is saturated but still translucent, and the pearlescent layer is milkily opaque. The interplay of the two layers at the boundary is what makes it so psychedelic, because you see deep colour where there is a thick layer of colour on top of the opaque layer, but you see the pearlescence shining through from beneath when there is only a thin layer of colour on top of it. And of course the thickness of the layers varies constantly throughout the pen because it has round shapes even though the material is a bunch of flat layers.

In regards to pens for artists, the Noodler's Boston Safety pen is popular because you can use india inks in them. I have one and tested the Higgins drawing ink in it and there were no problems at all. It is more expensive and maybe too much for someone just testing the waters, so to speak, but if they find that they like fountain pens for art, it would be a great choice for their 'next level' pen.

Greetings Guys! A good old-fashioned SOLID pencast! You know, I myself, would not usually suggest that other states in the nation should copy what California does, but WHOLLY AGREE that Cursive writing should be taught in schools everywhere. Once the basics are learned, then, an elective class in penmanship could be offered. Possibly as part of a school's art program, as Drew suggested last week. That would be AWESOME. I just wish that in my day we would have had a class that could show the joys of just putting down words on a page in a beautiful and artistic way. I think it might just connect with the youth more than we can prognosticate. Like others in the comments section, I wish that Lamy would produce more colored 2000's! A forest green would be WONDERFUL! Might even consider buying one then. The mirrored clip is a lot nicer, too. Rounding the corners of the clip would be a little less bauhaus and a bit more streamlined, like the shape of the pen. Well, one can wish anyhow! Brian! Dude! Reese's Puff is my secret candy cereal love. I feel like granola with chocolate bits at least has things like fiber. I hate raisins in my granola though - weird and stale. Peanut butter on toast with a bit of cocoa powder and sugar to amp it up is delicious. The purple Magna Carta really caught my eye. I think they are doing a great job with the stacked resins, perfect combo of vintage with a modern flare.

YES YES YES I want a Goulet Pens branded t-shirt, tote bag, coffee mug, or --- best of all -- padded pen cozy.

Drew, Goulet started carrying Wearingeul after the Wiz of Oz released but you need to get your hands on some Cowardly Lion (brown) ink and Brave gold shimmer! I know it isn't the SHEENING aspect you were imagining but it's pretty glorious. The whole collection is and got me into mixing ink. I love the ability to add a little shimmer when an ink needs a bit of pizzazz. Not that you like bold and bright things with pizzazz...

It's a little more red than brown, but I am in LOVE with Diamine Bah Humbug. A brown with gold shimmer is something I need more of in my life.

Yes to Merch! I would definitely wear a T-shirt. On Orange Julius....you didn't miss much there. I don't remember much about those stores except that occasionally my mom would take us there after school for a treat but we preferred DQ or the mall cookie store and a soda.

Hey guys love the show! I had a question about ink brands. I have been dipping into KWZ, and one super cool sheening inks by Octopus fluid inks. Is there any chance to have more ink brands available?

So glad my daughter learned cursive in school (private)! when she wrote her essay for high school admission here in New Jersey, they were very impressed with her cursive writing. Hopefully other states will follow CA.

From one appreciator of brown inks to another, some ink recommendations from either ones I've tried or I'm eyeballing myself: FWP Steeped Umber, Diamine Vintage Copper, Diamine Saddle Brown, Monteverde Core Brown Sugar, Jacques Herbin Caroube de Chypre. Also, we definitely need merch of some sort. How else are we supposed to find our people in the wild?! 😄

The best way to have poptarts is to toast them, then flip them frosting down and butter the bottom while hot. It cuts the dryness and adds lovely butteryness to the flavor.

Hello folks! There is a series of black-something inks from Monteverde. Nice!

Love that Slimer popcorn bucket story :) It might be one of the reasons why Millennials are looking younger; we definitely know how to embrace our inner child while managing to do adulting stuff on the side. But definitely one of the best things about the Millennial generation for me, is that we know how to find joy in the most mundane things and are never afraid to prioritize our inner child indulgences haha.

I have a frankenmeal for you Brian. My mom and I have always put peanut butter on our Mini Wheats, then the milk. It was easier before they discontinued the larger size, but I make it work with the bite size. Also, I don’t know about the rest of the country, but Orange Julius was a staple of every 80’s mall in Ohio.

An Orange Julius is a blend of milk, vanilla, orange juice, sugar, and powdered egg white. It’s been ages since I had one but they were pretty good as I recall. Sort of creamsicle-ish but frothy.

Thank you. That’s what I remember too, though I’m old and can remember when they were in the malls and used fresh, raw eggs.

A couple of thoughts on pens for art... I currently draw with Ahab. It has its quirks but that's a part of it's personality. As is the resilient flex nib. Noodlers makes empty cartridges for it, not sure if you guys carry them, but they changed my life with Ahabs. I'd go with Twsby Go instead of Eco. Eco looks better, but it is flimsier and more expensive than Go. Go's filling and cleaning mechanism is also better when it comes down to gritty life of an artist. Kakuno's are also great idea. What artist needs is variety of nibs to try, sturdy barrel and a mechanism and preferably demonstrators as there is always multiple pens with all kinds of inks in rotation. And there is a mountain of inks to try to find what behaves how for certain uses. Diamine is a good starting point.
