Brian Wilson is one of the most interesting people I have heard of. He always seems so modest and honest, like a kid and stayed that way.

The Stray Gators were the perfect vocal background choice for these Brian Wilson masterpieces!

This documentary is an art piece in itself. It allows the subject to breathe instead cluttering the phenomenon of Brian Wilson with a bunch of words, bc, let’s be honest, his story is hard to put into words. You just have to feel it. The artistic decisions, the family’s impressions and anecdotes, and the pacing of this documentary with live current and beautiful performances of new and old songs, let Brian just BE everything that he is. Thanks for posting!

You said it. It's one of my favorite documentaries on a person ever.

This stands alone as one of the better music documentaries, even though few people saw it. Some of the versions are better than the originals. Thanks for posting.

Definitely. I saw this at the premiere, and Brian Wilson played a few songs. It's still one of my favorite memories from my music biz days. And I agree - I actually prefer *most* of these over the originals. Just a note - the first time I posted this many years ago in lower quality, I got a takedown notice. Not sure why they didn't take this one down. Hopefully it stays up, or I hope whoever owns the rights releases a Blu-Ray at some point. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I can see where the movie Love and Mercy got their direct Brian inspiration from

It has been a pleasure to watch this very well made 1995 documentary about BW through his family, friends and best of all from his own words. So lovely to see & hear Carl, Audree, his children and the many musicians. GREAT 👍 work and Thank You.

Watching this after Love and Mercy and Long Promised Road makes me wonder what happened as he aged. What a beautiful soul though all through his life. Sad to see the light go out now.

We all get old, don't we. If I could give you a little bit of encouragement, I saw Brian Wilson at a special performance at a screening of this documentary back in the '90s. He was SO happy to learn that people still loved him and wanted to hear his music. It gave me so much joy to see him really taking it in after so many years of trauma. Take a look at his Tour page on his website - he was well loved and continues to be loved by everyone. We should all be so lucky in our old age! Cheers from NY!

They finally told Brian’s story right!

Having been obsessed with SMiLE since the SMiLE Sessions out, I think the biggest reason SMiLE never came out was because Brian couldn't figure out how to put all music modules together. Good vibrations (one song off a 12 track SMiLE ) took several months. A whole album like that needed several years. It was a bit much for one person to handle, with limited technology, too.

I agree. He sort of ran out of time. Other bands were releasing their masterpieces and Brian fell behind on his effort, unfortunately. I also became obsessed with the album when I first heard about it. It's such a legendary story

Exactly! Brian seemed to have a hundred madcap ideas for every song. It became impossible for him to decide which parts to drop, which parts to keep, and how to sequence/arrange them. It was a wonder that he came up with a successful edit of Good Vibrations in six months and it was no wonder that he struggled to create a full album from those sessions. The bootleg recordings and the session tapes that turned up on the Good Vibrations boxed set years later revealed the compellingly sinister side of Heroes and Villains. And when Brian did manage to finish the SMiLE album, that dark musical phrase was used to tie together an entire section of the piece. I've always felt it was a shame that Brian never had a producer or a collaborator in the BB who was talented enough to help Brian with some of those tough creative decisions. Although if he did have such a partner, perhaps his music would have lost some of its trademark intimacy and melancholy.
