The album he's promoting here is fantastic. If you don't know it, the 80s-ness of it might make you worry but don't let it, it's great. Love and Mercy has become one of his most identifiable songs, but Melt Away is my favourite. Rio Grande is like a real return to SMiLE-type era composition.

Good interview. The interviewer pulls no punches around the Landy issue. It's complicated. I read Brian's biography years ago and it seemed like Landy had done him a lot of good. Got him fit, working again, helped him conquer his anxiety and agoraphobia...but the control that he exerted over Brian in the end was just as bad in it's own way. I don't know the whole story of how Brian got away from Landy. He seems to have found a semblance of peace and stability with his current wife. Brian's life was complicated from the beginning. His relationship with his nutcase father, the abuse he experienced growing up, the pressure of being the main songwriter and producer for The Beach Boys, his obvious fragility as a human being in general...he's had a long bumpy ride but oh boy the music that has come out of that man, and his brothers. Heaven sent.
@yansa1966
@yansa1966 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure, but you may have read his 1991 biography, which has been discredited and disowned by Brian Wilson, who had little to nothing to do with the writing of the book. If it portrayed Landy in a positive light, that was likely because Landy was much more involved than Brian was in the making of that book.

Such a gentle man. This video was made when he was a captive of Dr Landey. It seems like maybe the Dr primed him to blame the drugs - he kept repeating about his drug misuse. But in the King interview he says he took LSD 4 times. But he was being overdosed by Landerywho later lost his licence in the state of California.

Thanks so much for sharing this!...I know so much has been documented and said about Brian's relationship with Dr. Landy....Much of it negative...I'm not here to dispute any of that...But what I will say is that given Brian's condition - physical and otherwise - prior to working with Dr. Landy, it is not a stretch to say that Brian's life was probably saved by this association...So despite all the negative, Brian and his family and friends endured because of Dr. Landy, he is thankfully alive and well and performing the music he and we all love. I wish Brian and his family nothing but peace, joy and love:)

I wish we could hear the audio from that footage of him in the studio working on his solo album! Although the production sounds a little dated now, I still think that might be his best work since the Beach Boys other than his Smile recreation. It really felt like Brian was driving the bus on that 1988 album. The more recent ones, it's harder to tell sometimes... he works with some great arrangers and musicians and I'm not completely sure how much is coming from them vs. him (I don't mean to be disrespectful-- I really like some of those albums and Brian obviously is a big part of them).
