It's so satisfying to hear how expanded-on the music is compared to Smile Sessions. Like Blue Hawaii or the pirate lyrics during Holidays.

I was privileged to go to two of these Smile shows in Southern California. Two of the best shows I've ever seen by any artist. I got a bit misty at times during the set as we witnessed Brian's long-delayed dream come true on stage! I purchased this DVD but I think I only got to watch it once on a very low quality screen on my desktop computer. The camera work here is impeccable! Instead of it being random, it's focused on what the viewer probably would want to see at that point of the show (a voice, an instrument, a sound effect). Brian and the whole band are really into it and don't miss even the smallest detail. This was a great time to be a Brian Wilson fan!

Agreed that the camerawork (incl. switching) is hella on-point

no one should ever doubt that music is therapeutic. I've had a crappy couple of days and this has made everything just melt away. But that's nothing compared to the fact that when Brian Wilson performed this music, the many demons he had been tormented with fled. I'm so glad he is still with us to this day, and even though he has lost his dear Melinda, I hope he has found peace

At the current date I'm writing this, 28/9/2024, the BWPS album is now 20 years old. Crazy to think so much time has passed since this show was recorded and the album came out.

Looks fantastic! I maybe would edit the original wide shots in to retain the quality on the faces, as it is lost almost completely when it cuts to a wide shot, but the close-up looks incredible!
@CapitalQ7 ай бұрын
Thank you! The blurrier wide shots are an unfortunate side effect of the original 480p DVD transfer, but I was quite pleased with how the once oversharpened close-ups came out here.

Maybe a bad example, but Cabin Essence sounds like if Coldplay had put out a song in 1967. This album was way ahead of its time, and not sure the music industry was ready for it back then. Maybe would've totally changed the evolution of music that came out afterwards.

A lot of clever production but when you get down to it most of the music is very simple, melodically and harmonically. Wilson seems to work from simplicity to comlexity whereas the great composers will work the other way round, refining and simplifying their ideas for maximum affect and effect. I have tried to listen to this music but it suffers from the same problem as Queens music i.e. too many ideas, not particularly original in themselves, under developed and spliced together in what seems a rather haphazard way. Sorry if my comments cause offence but there must be room for criticism as well as applause.

In the regard of todays standards in music in terms of how broad things are both musically and the way in which things are performed i agree that this can get lost on contemporary viewers, but in remembering that this was planned to be released in 1967, where having a concept album was a newer concept. When it was done the music was not nearly as complex as some of brians ideas, by todays standards music like this is not as impressive in its ideas, i personally believe music should be both fun and inventive and thats why this album is so beautiful to me, some of the melodys might not sound the most original but the lyrics from wilson and van dyke parks are incredible, "kartoffein and sell my vegetables" while it might not be groundbreaking its the style of the music, taking very simple ideas and adding very difficult and beautiful compositions to play, by the standards of 2004 and now the landscape of music is very different meaning not everyone will enjoy this kind of music, but if you enjoy music that revolves around fun, human emotion and inventive nature then i cannot recommend this enough, the belief that this could have been better than sgt pepper is very difficult to comment on accurately, because they are both so different, if you were someone interested in the use of studio, then sgt pepper is a better album but if you were someone much more interested in classical pop and harmony, smile is the better album for you. Brians style of composition is obviously very different than his inspirations like bach, and he is someone very much inspired by classical music, but his use of this in pop music is not something to be underestimated, Smile is an album for those interested in surrealist and realist nature, for those interested in harmony and childlike wonder, while its sad it was never given proper opportunity for critical acclaim in 1967 i believe it would have done just as well as pet sounds and possibly even better, even if its not for everyone its important to take in brians genius regardless of how you may recieve his music
