My dad was a marine and was at mateo for 10 years. He fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom and lost alot of buddies. While we were watching this he said hes pretty sure he knew Nick. And he use to walk up to the crosses all the time to say hey to his brothers. He started tearing up when he saw them crosses and ive only seen him cry but a few times in my 14 years of living, just shows how hard of a subject this is. The people you are stuck with everyday...only to end up missing them everyday afterwards...the friends you'll never see again and the friends that are there one minute, and gone the next. My family, myself, and tens of marines rucked my brothers headstone up 1st sergeant hill just a year ago (3/4 Marines India company). It was really beautiful to see this video. Whenever you make the hike next look to the far right of the main cross to find his headstone (Menachem Mendel Goldbloom) and give him a Lil Sumpin Ale if your feeling generous :)

Howevee I have a ton of respect for Service Members and I know way more about military equipment than I should lol. I think that you can feel good about it man. @akaoreoo9604, the best advice I can give you as a new enlistee is to be yourself. Don’t try to be like anyone else, but transform yourself through strengthening of your mind and body. Never settle for the status quo, but don’t hold yourself higher than the brother on your flank. Respect everyone, but respect yourself more than anyone. Seek the one true king with all your heart and mind and soul. Do all these things and greatness will cover you and protect you. Semper Fidelis

Good luck I've been out for 2 years. My best advice is to run as much as you can until you go. The first month will be the hardest adjusting. The second month you'll know the routine. Your 3rd and last month you'll be conditioned. In your last month try and get the DI to laugh or crack a smile. You'll understand when you're there lol. Lastly if you can get your wisdom teeth out before you go otherwise you'll regret not doing it in advance.

I made a lengthier comment, a minute ago, about “1stSgt’s Hill” we called it Hill 7. At 65 this olé Marine still rides, humps (backpack hikes, for the CivDiv.) and shoots (not as offed as I should). I do live in Davey Crockett country, and am a distant descent of Him. Maybe I'm getting older or maybe because I'm an army veteran (2007-2018), I always get choked up when I watch these videos. I was stationed near DC and had to go to Walter Reed for specialty appointments with my wife but she hated going there because there would be so many kids 18-20 yrs old missing an arm or a leg. I got out few years ago and work in DC but I still can't bring myself to visit the Arlington National Cemetery. Watching this brought back memories of my 3 friends that died in combat.

Thanks for the video. I lived in San Clemente and served in 3rd Battalion 7th. Marines, Kilo Company, 1st Platoon. I’m old now, was there at Camp San Mateo in 1985-89. Great times, a lot of pain, humped all those hills when they had real names not numbers. I was there before the 7th was moved to 29 Palms. I had a lot of friends in 2/5 back in the day as well. @brian636 thank you man for doing this! It helps me every single year because my dad was 3rd marine air wing in Vietnam and he passed when I was 19 and that was my best friend on the planet. I never grew up with a mother around so I’ve been alone per say since his death and it’s been hard and I look forward to this video every year that you do it because I lost him and a few other buddies out of the 5th as well! Keep doing what your doing man much love, and thank you for your service to our country brother!!!

Quite honestly found you by accident ! I was hoping for maybe something a little different, but I don't know what I could expect. I know there have been many changes ! I just figured it out, I was last on board Pendleton some 44 years ago ! And when you said Camp San Mateo, I can't describe the feeling I had riding along with you, trying desperately to see something familiar ! And other than those Hills and I could almost smell the sage ! Back then, San Mateo was home to 1/7 ! ( Which I believe was moved to 29 Stumps ? ) I was with the 81's then, and there weren't many of those hills we didn't hump ! Some so steep, my nose was literally inches off the deck ! Somewhere I made a panoramic picture of the Base from atop the Hills above the Base, using an old 110 camera I bought at the PX ! We were at the end of the base closest to San Onefre, and what was ITS,( Infantry Training School) then. They had just built, what we called Hotels for 3/7 , but we were in single story barracks at the time ! Over the years, I have used Google Maps to find my way home, only to discover my barracks long gone and replaced with something totally different ! Although, I think the HQ building was still there ? Last road heading out, maybe on Basilone ? If I remember correctly ? Been too many years ! But I wanted to thank you, for what you do, especially for our fallen Brothers ! Believe me when I say our Spirits are with you ! I won't go into detail, but it was something I learned after being discharged, and then have the Beirut bombing happen ! It wrecked me ! GOD BLESS AMERICA ! GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS ! GOD BLESS US ALL ! GODSPEED ! SEMPER FI ! 🇺🇸☠️🇺🇸

I swear into the marine corp next Wednesday and leave for bootcamp in June. I am super stoked but also super scared incase something like this does happen to me. Just stumbled across this video. Never served, closest I came was a COB at Ft. Irwin. I got nothing but mad respect for those who serve. This video made me feel a range of powerful emotion. Thank you all for your service. Guys like me appreciate and support you.

My personal take on some of these wars is this, I hate that we were in them, some of them we shouldn’t have been, but I’ll respect the hell out of the guys who went over there and did what they did. Thank you for your service Brian, my dad and his dad were marines and I’ll always respect the hell out of y’all.

My dad was in the us navy during desert storm and I salute him to this day knowing he lost friends and family in desert storm
