We absolutely love what we are doing - living a life of full-time travel. But, with it comes many not so pretty sides that many aren't aware of. Do you travel full-time? Do any of the things we mention in this video sound familar, or do you have other areas that you have experienced? Cheers 🍻

I have only experienced 33 countries and 8-9 cruises. The reason we like cruising is to sample a port like the one in Costa Rica, which really like. We would return for 2 weeks to see much more of the country. So glad we did. The longest I've stayed in a country is 3 weeks which was Bali and Thailand. But I like the idea of staying longer and keeping a home base to explore from there. Question: For the countries, cities or villages that you two have visited. Which one's would you go back to or go back to live? Peace

Wow, what a great video! I'm only 2 months into this nomadic lifestyle and I can totally relate to the various topics you discussed. I've chosen to do 2 weeks at a location before moving on to the next one. I really hate packing, unpacking, moving too often. Having 2 weeks gives me enough time to do sightseeing but also the extra time to just hang out, get into a routine, chill out in the apartment, or do some planning. Those days of not doing anything make you feel more like you are living there rather than being on vacation. I've also found that friends and family think I’m on one big vacation where every day is excitement, but that's not what it is. And I don’t want it to be like that! Like you said, “It's regular living…you’re just living somewhere else.” Very well put! I also don’t have a home base. I plan to go back to the states twice a year, for a few weeks in the summer and then again around Christmas/New Years. The way I've been handling the planning issue is that I only do trip planning on the weekends. Since I've retired I've noticed that the weekends are when all the working people are out doing the things they couldn't do during the week, so places are crowded and hectic. And I’m seeing it’s like that everywhere in the world. So I do all my activities during the week when the workers are at work, and then stay in and do things like planning on the weekends to avoid the crowds. Thanks for keeping it real and sharing the down sides of this lifestyle. It’s really important for everyone considering it to know all sides. But despite the little issues, I definitely love living this way! It’s so liberating! 😊

My trips are longer now and I can relate to getting tired. Slow travel seems much more sustainable long term. I color code my travel days in my itinerary with bright yellow, and I know if I see too much yellow that I’ve been a little too ambitious putting together the itinerary and need to slow things down down and skip a few spots.

This video right here I thought I wanted. That i would enjoy full time travel, however I did realize after months of travel I don't want it. It did lead to burn out, tiring, exhausted in living out of suitcase & lack of homemade meals. I am moving abroad to be in Europe (Portugal) full time & have a base to travel from. I need this emotionally, physically & finicially. Good luck to you both.

The thing I find about traveling like this is that all the little decisions we take for granted every day are much more difficult each time you start over. "where's the grocery store" "what do I want to eat" "where am I going to exercise" "how do I get to XYZ". Having to re learn all of those every time you move locations begins to take it's toll after a while. Excellent video!!

It's obvious you know each other EXTREMELY well as travel is the fastest way to see how one deals with stress and unfamiliar surroundings as well as strange food issues, lol. It's obvious you truly love each other and you are both funny and patient. There are many youtube videos out there for every place on the planet but your videos are very well made and I've noticed they just get better and better as you become experienced. As someone who hasn't lived in his home country for almost a decade, it's quite entertaining to me watching you guys learn and grow as you continue to travel. Lots of truths in this video! My girlfriend and I wouldn't change our lifestyle for anything, but it's true that it can be quite exhausting. Unlike you guys though, my (common-law) girlfriend is European, so I am able to stay in a lot of places or get visas through her, which makes things easier within the EU. We typically establish a "home-base" for at least 6 months to a year or two, and explore surrounding countries during that time. We've down short term stays and jumping around, and it's much more exhausting. When you guys end up in Asia, it will be much easier to have a "base", if that's what you desire. Totally wanna grab a drink with you guys some day. It may seen like you're complaining to some, but I know exactly where you're coming from. 😂

Hi, Brandon! Someday we do plan on establishing a "home base" to travel from for long periods of time. We really like the Algarve region. I have traveled a fair bit and you have hit all the points that can make travel exhausting: Different time zones, figuring out what is in the kitchen, different mattresses that can give you back pain, electricity or internet gone for hours or the whole day (yikes), packing, unpacking. At times, you wake up and think - where am I today, you have to turn on light to see where is the bathroom and where you stored your toiletries, have to sleep on the airport/bus station, deal with issues as they come (late bus and missing connection). I have always like slow travel, if I can afford it (time permits). That gives me time to absorb the place.

LOVED this video! I kind of stumbled onto your channel. We’re not full time travelers yet but we travel now for a month at a time in the US and abroad. You’re definitely NOT whining. There’s nothing I hate more than when a youtuber makes what they’re doing seem like it’s effortless and the rest of us are incapable because we struggle. All of these were great tips. Could you possibly link the currency exchange apps and others you found helpful? Traveling in South and Central America now, I would definitely say that patience is key and to have some flexibility built into your travel plans! And even if something looks close mileage wise it may take double or triple the time to actually get there because of the infrastructure or local traffic. I’d also say that travelers should be aware of the most used mode of transportation in that country and not doggedly stick to what they’re used to-for instance taking the water taxis in Bangkok instead of renting a car or taking the local buses in Panama instead of driving or flying. And many countries don’t allow uber or lyft except in big cities and then it may not be the best option. And just because it’s an American founded company (big car rental companies) they are run by and are subject to the laws of the country you’re in which maybe different than your countries laws.

What a truthful summary of some of the downsides of travelling abroad! Spot on!! I wish we had watched this before our 3 month trip to Europe. We ended up doing: 10 trains, 18 buses, 2 gondolas, 3 rental cars, 2 river cruises, 1 cruise ship, 22+ubers, 2 Trams, 1 tuk tuk, 4 bus connectors, 5 airport shuttles, 2 taxis, 11 plane rides and 17 accomodations. We were utterly exhausted from all the physical and mental work. It's so nice to be home again and stable. We really do take for granted the words of Dorothy. At one time I wanted FULL time, but my wife talked me out of selling the house. I'm so glad she did. Regarding ATMs....be aware that the exchange rates are not the same at all ATMs. I recently found this in Croatia that some ATMs exchange rate can be 20-30% higher than the "official" rate that you will find on the internet. This is particularly true in super popular tourist sites....especially in the "Old Town" areas near where cruise passengers arrive. My best experience was when I used the ATMs that were actually owned/operated by the Bank of Zagreb or Bank of XYZ country that you are visiting. Ditto for currency exchange places especially in airports.

We did the same thing you are doing, for 10 years. Now, we have a home base, in the country, Georgia. We used to stay for 3 months in a country. We always joined a gym, to stay fit. We didn't really have any savings over the 10 years. Now, we have plenty of savings, and we can travel when we want, and where we want. Best wishes, to you both.

For 10 years of data you accumulated about traveling constantly would be very valuable. What was the overall average monthly spend? Would you recommend? And was that on the cheap or was that realistic not extravagant?
@christinadaggett60242 жыл бұрын
@@NewCastleIndiana Early on we spent between $600 and $700, a month. That of course included utilities. Now, those places are more like $800, a month. Countries like Netherlands, and France, are more expensive. Countries, such as Romania, and Bulgaria, are less. We usually get a studio, or a one bedroom, and we always get amenities, such as, a washing machine, WI-FI, elecrtric kettle, etc.

Do you think that you would still prefer slow travel if you weren’t working so hard on your KZbin channel? I know you put a ton of effort into it (which we’re grateful for!) but just wondering if that makes a big difference in your preferences. Thanks for helping us as we prepare!! ❤

I would expand on the language issue (you mentioned it a bit with the menus in restaurants 😊) , I love learning at least a few phrases to get by in the country I am in but if moving even monthly that could be a bit of a mental stress for some…just got back from just shy of a month in Morocco using quite a bit of my high school French, and then we had a few days in Madrid and I kept speaking French and not using Spanish! it took a day or so and a mental effort 😊 - with the language apps it is easier too.

I’m with you. I’ve slow-traveled southeast Asia (tiring after awhile) and now I’m staying put for 18 months so far in Cambodia. Much more relaxing staying put. You find a super-affordable apartment to rent, find stores and products you like. Becoming familiar with the things you like and want is always nice and you give all that up as soon as you move on to a new destination. It’s a lot of work, but fun… to a point.

This was extremely relatable and comforting as it helps you realize it's not just you when you start to feel a certain way at times. Always grateful for your truthfulness and not the always pretentiousness express by so many about this lifestyle. No matter the few downsides, I too love this life. I solo travel, seeing you two, I have a minute of wishing I had a partner, not necessarily romantic, to be on this journey with and then I think how much I don't feel like dealing with anyone else's moods on top of my own. LOL! It would be great to share some of the housing expense though.

I have to agree with Carrie's 5 month intervals. After traveling 10 winters in our RV throughout Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, we have come down to 5 months in one place, Mazatlan, Mexico! Then 5 months in our home state of Colorado (near mother and daughter) and 2 months traveling in the RV in the US. Plus, it gives us time to visit other family, do taxes and regroup. Fortunately we have a home base and great neighbors to look forward to every summer. Call us snowbirds that still have a travel bug.

Our favorite countries are Portugal and Spain. We're out there every day seeing the sights, but we get tired of taxis and my wife gets tired of using public restrooms. And it seems that right when we've figured out where things are, it's time to pack up and leave. The worst is coming home and looking up the places you visited and realizing that you missed seeing something beautiful that was nearby. Another thing is the international airports make you walk a long way to get to your gate or make you go through security (again) before boarding your connecting flight.

I couldn't travel the way you guys are doing it. It can be exhausting and like you said, you can find yourself not living in the moment because you have to research the next location constantly. I would need a home base somewhere, even if it was just an apartment in a favourite city or town in Europe/America. There's going to come a time when you just don't want to move on to the next place, because you HAVE to. I would have to have my own space to come back to and decompress for a month or two. Also, if virus 2.0 gets unleashed, I want the ability to be at home, not stuck in an Air BNB for 6 months or more.
@BrianandCarrie2 жыл бұрын
Very valid point. We have decided to be home for at least 6-8 weeks in the winter and 6 weeks in the summer. We still however will be house sitting when we return.

@@BrianandCarrie The powers that be are going to crash the world economy next year. The next several years will be a good time to buy something(at 40% less) and rent it out. Just to have some equity in a place that you can live in later and actually own it. The other option is to buy a sail boat and see the world on that. It gives you the freedom to go where you want, but you have your own home with you and your own pillow!

Hey Brian and Carrie, great video. I wanted to give you a tip since you are traveling a lot and getting out cash. Please look into Revolut, or Wise for exchanging currency virtually and getting a credit card of theirs. You only withdrawal what you need and there isn’t a fee at ATMs you pay the fee (which is very small if you have the free plans) with in the app when you need to exchange money. It’s also very safe to protect your ATM card from being used. I’ve used it for 3 years while I live and travel and Europe, I’m always a US citizen. It works great with your US bank. Hope that helps you not have extra cash you don’t need. Thanks for your content, it’s really great!

Wanted to share a couple of things that work really well for me 1. I carry my own special pillow - practically, I can sleep almost anywhere. True that I had to find the appropriate luggage, but there are options in the market and at this point I think I'm managing well. 2. When it comes to eating, since I'm a solo traveler, I almost never stay out after dark so, I have breakfast and dinner at the airbnb - this means I hardly miss food from home, I am home eating the food I like 😊. We're retired and returned to our favourite slow method of travel. We choose our next location if it's within a four hour bus ride. We seem to stay about a week in many locations deciding suddenly, the night before we leave, which direction we'll get a bus towards in the morning. We haven't struggled getting a bus within an hour of arriving at the bus station; or accomodation once we arrive. Occasionally one of us will sit in a cafe while the other scouts an area looking at options. Some special place may keep us for three weeks, but that seems to be our max so far. This system has worked well in Latin America and Asia in recent years. Do you think that system will work in Europe. We haven't been there in years, so I think we'll have to adjust and plan, a little, but I'm hoping not.

Great video! So true! There’s good, bad and ugly in full time traveling. (Was doing it for 10 years. Starting again in December.) But try looking for part time volunteering once in awhile to make it more interesting. 😊 Also, if you have leftover cash from a country you’re leaving, look for a business that sells gift cards that can be used worldwide, like a Starbucks, and switch your cash for that before you leave the country. Keep it fun and safe! 🎉
