In this video, we show you what to pack for full-time travel in carry-on only. It wasn't long after we left for our first year of full-time travel that we began realizing the packing mistakes we were making. Over the next 7 months of travel, we continued to learn and recently made a trip home to regroup and adjust our packing to carry-on only. Thanks for watching!!

I used to travel for business and got in the habit of always packing a rubber doorstop -- shove it under the door whenever you're in the room. Better than any lock I've ever found! (I had a colleague who carried two: she'd keep one on the bathroom counter in case she ever had to run and barracade inside. Sounds extreme, but solo females on the road for weeks at a time have seen a lot...)

European airlines will only allow 1 piece of hand luggage, which includes your handbag. Gone are the days of taking a backpack, handbag and getting away with it. More than 1 and it goes in the hold.

I´ve found that taking less clothes and shoes is always a good idea. Also, depending on the destination and climate there, you can buy some clothes cheaply if you need them. This is usually true in the warmer countries. Also, in warmer countries, if you wash your clothes and hang them up to dry, they will be dry or mostly dry by morning and then you can just rewear them. I often use a hairdryer (the one provided in your hotel or airbnb) to dry off any clothes that are still slightly damp. I usually use shampoo to handwash my clothes (usually a clear type of shampoo rather than a creamy one and also take a nice new dishwashing sponge and use the same shampoo to wash any cups or dishes if eating in hotel room) and never wear or pack jeans as they are too heavy and difficult to handwash and take ages to dry. Better to take tights and several pairs of leggings which you can even wear on top of each other if it is cold. It is good to take at least one pair of good pants/trousers though. Wearing a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers/trainers on the plane means using up less space in your luggage and less weight. You can pick up things like flip flops and swimsuits, shorts etc at your destination if and when you need them. Good idea to take a plastic cup and plate and cutlery (but good solid ones rather than the cheap plastic ones which can. break, which happened with a pack of forks I bought once from a Spar type shop). Leggings and long sleeved t shirts are my essentials as you can wear some to sleep and wear some outdoors. My final tip, always have a bottle of water that you buy after going through security and have a pack of potato chips and at least one roll of toilet paper in your carry on bag. Good idea to have some small packs of tissues with you too. I have had instances where the flight had delays and/or announced they had no food. At least if you have your own water and snacks, you can take your medications if you need to and survive. If you take enough snacks or buy something to eat in the airport on arrival with you, you can also survive the first night at your hotel without having to go out to find food if you arrive late at night or are just really exhausted after your trip. Also good to take a few lightweight plastic bags to put any unwashed clothes/laundry or shoes into so you can keep them separate from the clean stuff in your bags if you are moving from place to place and need to pack them in a hurry.

After 30 years of travel for months at a time, i pretty much pack like you guys. A couple things, i like pockets on the outside of my bag to pull out or stuff something in it in a hurry. I tend to pack as if im going away for a week, and that covers it almost always. One point though, i always leave room for souvenir shirts or something similar, I usually bring a couple less tshirts, and use the room for the ones i buy on the road. Great video, ill be showing my girlfriend and get her packing!

If weather is nice, ive gone for over a month with jus a small backpack. Must haves include, bandanas, ( so versitile), quick dry dress, a spoon, compact rain jacket ( also use for warmth), wool socks, hand sanitizing wipes, sawyer bottle top water purifier ( if needed). Bathing suit that can also be used as undies and bra. Loose shorts comfy enough to also sleep in....everything must serve multiple purposes.

Just came back to this video. I now do carry on all the time What I found is I had a personal shoulder strap bag for under the seat on the plane like Carrie. I found it to hard when disembarking & embarking planes through Asia when I had to do it on the tarmac or even just stairs at stations with my carry on & shoulder bag. I have since purchased a leather backpack for under the seat (good size) It is so much easier now when I have to use steps carrying both bags. I now carry the carry on with the backpack on my back I have one hand free. So much easier for me now 😊

Great tips well presented. One of the things I learned to maximize space is to roll your clothing items tightly. You wont believe how much extra space it creates. So far on our couple of 3 week trips to Europe, we have managed with one duffel, and a backpack for each of us. Reason for the duffel being practically no weight. We were well under the limit on weight imposed by local European Airlines and were always under 8Kg / 18 lbs. The only hassle with the duffel being having to hand carry it. Of course for the longer trip like yours what you have presented is ideal, and you just pay for one large check in when flying. Great job guys. Just got back from the Greek island and Amalfi coast, Naples area 3 week trip and trying to catch up on your Vlogs. Cheers.

Heres why i strongly prefer backpack to suitcase: 1: stairs and escalators. 2: filth and puddles on sidewalks. 3:expandable 4: can self repair if it breaks 5: can be squished into overhead 6: washable I once saw some girls in budapest trying to clean dog poop off the wheels of a suitcase.

I have that identical black bag and the strap works almost doubled and fed through belt loops. Its flat enough to fit under a shirt and everything is close to your body. We started this channel as soon as we could to help generate as much income as possible to help sustain our travels as much as possible. As for what we will be doing later in life? We know that day will come. We imagine that we will settle down someplace in the US part-time or in a place where we love the lifestyle. Buy then we will be eligible for our pension, retirement investments, SS, and medical.

Hi Brian and Carrie. Thanks for another helpful video. We were going to order the bigger away bags via your link, but just looked at RyanAirs (London to Porto) carryon dimensions, which are ridiculous. NO one appears to make a carryon that is 7.9” deep. Have you flown Ryan pair or any of the other european “tiny flights” that have micro carryon sizes and weights? Do they actually measure and weigh them? They have a 22# max weight on carryon as well. what is the weight of Carrie’s away bag fully loaded? It seems like it would be over 22# when you factor in 7.4# for empty suitcase, shoes, hair straightener, electronics etc? Weight is one of the crucial bits of info most vloggers fail to include. Super appreciative if you can help with this info.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie Жыл бұрын
Hi! The dimensions they give are so difficult to work within. Thankfully, the many times we flew Ryan Air and other discount airlines in Europe, we never had an issue with our bags. The funny thing was, our bags many times were smaller compared to other bags we saw people carrying on. Out of ALL the flights we have done in the past year (many on budget airlines) with our Away luggage we have only had our bags weighed one time - and this was in SE Asia where they are much stricter. We love our Away bags and are so happy we made the switch. As for weight - my bag weighs 11kg (24 lbs) and only once did it get weighed. Hope that helps ☺ Cheers!!

@BrianandCarrie I was curious about that as I will be traveling through SE Asia soon with their 7 kg weight limits. Thanks for the info. I'll be purchasing a bigger carry-on in the future. If I have to check my carry-on once in a while, it's still worth it.

I LOVE my Eagle Creek travel bags! They make, or at least used to make a carry on bag that you zip a backpack to. You have an extendedable handle to roll both bags as one, backpack straps to carry both on your back or one on the back and one on your front. I would roll up to check in, unzip the backpack and never had a problem. Once in the Airbnb I would leave the carry on and just walk around with the back pack.

That's a great way to do it, Jerry. I am finding that my carry-on has enough room to toss my backpack in and just use my sling on the plan. Less is more when traveling the way we do. Safe travels!! Cheers!!🍻

My husband and I just finished watching this packing video of yours and boy did we laugh at ourselves! We started our travel time beginning of August 2022 and first landed in Italy. When we started we had 2 backpacks, a duffle bag, a large rolling 70lb suitcase, 2 blankets and 2 pillows...this was all of our possessions and we thought we had it right....NOT!!! Try fitting all that on a train!!! We downsized even more really fast at each stay and we have our share of "left behinds" too. In the middle of August we let go of the 70lb monster luggage and duffle bag. It is September and we now only own 1 backpack each, a purse and another backpack. Our outfits include 3-4 shirts/blouses, 4 bottoms, 3 pair of underwear, 2 sports bras and a pair of shoes each and a pair of sandles for the Mrs. We plan to buy clothes as we need them and then leave them behind! We have subscribed to your channel and relate to your videos the most of all vloggers. We are looking forward to visiting the Balkins thanks to ya'll😊

I truly can't recall for sure if we flew Iberia Airlines when we were in Europe. But, I will say that in the 8 months traveling Europe and 4 months traveling SE Asia, we've only been asked to check our bags 1 time. We fly a lot and this includes many flights on budget airlines. At this point, we've more than paid for our luggage with the money we've saved, even if there are a few times we are asked to check out baggage.

I have a carry-on that zips to a backpack so you can wheel both but now I usually leave the carry-on at home and just take the backpack. Check out alpaca and merino wool for underwear, socks, t-shirts, and hoody. You can actually wear socks or t-shirts for over a month without washing and it will not smell. Travelling with 2 socks, underwear, t-shirts and shorts drastically cuts down on size of backpack needed.

For example, money belt, hidden passport carrier (where is your passport when out and about?), throw-away second wallet, travel pants with zippered pockets, and, stored separately, scans of your passports, etc.. Do you have a good way to ensure that Brian's phone and Carrie's phone back each other up so they can both always access (e.g., usernames, passwords) important travel info (B&B reservations, tickets, etc.) in case one phone dies?

I like your travel slippers, can you tell us where you got them? The one item if find essential is a toilet kit, not a bath room kit, but one for going to the toilet, let me explain. In China, the toilets in bus stations and rail stations can leave a lot to be desired! They are usually squat toilets, often there is not hook on the door, the floor is wet with what I cannot imagine, and the lock on the door is missing. You DO NOT want to put your coat or bag on the wet floor! So in a small Ziploc bag I carry two "S" hooks to hang my bag and coat over the door, a portable door lock from Amazon and some toilet paper (you never know!) I would not travel without it!

Don't visit the southern hemisphere as your suitcase is too big for carry on and your under seat bag is carryon, no such thing as personal bag unless business class. Brian's bag is like mine, but even less underwear, travelled 60 days UK summer, on own, had suitcase that could have been carryon but with 24 hours traveling, prefer the suitcase in the hold, one 30 liter pack back a school bag that had tablet and 3 days worth of clothes and clear bag and handbag in it, camera and phone. Had a cold set of clothes which were use. Dumped clothes, when purchased anything new. My additions were a clothes line with suction cups and hooks. No flip flops, only decent walking sandels all footwear could be worn for 12 hours or more. Didn't take shoes off on the plane's due to feet swelling up.

How much are you carrying in terms of weight? Some European airlines have reduced limits like: - Handbag / Carryon Weight: 8kg (17 lb 10 oz) Size: Length × Width × Height => 40 × 23 × 55 cm (or 15.748 x 9.055 in x 21.65 in) - Small Item Weight: 4kg (8 lb 13 oz) - Check-in Weight: 23 kg ( or 50 lb 11oz) Size (length + width + height) = 158 cm (max) (or 62 in)

I love this video. As someone who has been on hundreds of trips over the years, it took me a long time to optimize my packing. I also hate flip flops Brian, but they are great in hostels/zimmers/etc. especially in the bathrooms. I have the added weight of a full camera gear setup (DSLR), laptop, associated adapters/chargers. You definitely learn what you actually need vs what you think you need after a few trips. I know it sounds weird, but I also pack clothes that are about worn out (socks, underwear, t-shirts that are basically ready to throw out) and on the trip in the trash they go. Out with the old, in with the new. I also make sure to leave space for souvenirs. Anything essential always goes in carryon (I mostly travel all carryon now, even for trips as long as 30 days.... yes, it's an art not a science). Again, great video!

Very helpful;! So how about ironing clothes (travel iron), do you use laundromats for washing?, do you use wallets or travel wallets or just loose currency and cards in the small purse? do you use safes for your valuables at places you stay? And I guess if you are not creating looks for your insta travel photos - it is easy go with the basics you outlined! I saw one guy on KZbin that puts all his electronics in his carry on backpack in case they insist on checking in carry on luggage (sometimes happens) so he does not lose his expensive equipment in case luggage does not show up along with some basics to live on while waiting for his lost luggage in case that happens.

We have not had any problems with our luggage. We recently flew from Bangkok to Chaing Mai on Asian Air, and they claim to have a stringent policy of One bag each under 7kg. We had two bags over 7kg and still had no problems. In Europe, we flew several different budget airlines including Ryan Air, again, no questions asked. We figure that we will eventually be told that we need to check our luggage but have already saved enough money that the away luggage has paid for itself. Personally I would not put prescriptions (or eye correction) in carry-on suitcase. I've had too many instances in which I was unexpectedly forced to check my suitcase, which is even smaller than yours. Reasons vary from being over weight to full overhead bins to extremely small overhead bins in small short haul planes. Because of that, I often pack a few essential clothing items in my under-seat bag in case my luggage gets lost, which I see you do too!

Hi, Anna. We have never been asked any questions about our Away carry-on and they easily fit in the overhead bin. We have even noticed people taking carry-on luggage that seems to be bigger than ours. We have already saved half the amount of the luggage itself simply by not having to pay fees to check bags. Thank you for watching and safe travels. Cheers!!!🍻

Dr. Harris, I was previously going through the same dilemma myself. Now, I travel with the clothes on my back and a small toiletry bag. It's really very simple...only stay at nudist resorts. Ha-ha!
