Thank you all so much for watching. I really appreciate it!!! I loved reacting to Wicked. This is my first time watching the *MOVIE, I've listened to the soundtrack a handful of times.* The movie truly made me think, and Glinda had me of two minds the whole time, lol. I understand why some of you are confused by my confusion, and that’s okay. I haven’t spent much time with the material, and I think it’s better to admit confusion than to dismiss something entirely. For me, that confusion revolves around Glinda as a character. The movie is an excellent musical-to-movie adaptation, but in the second act, I kept waiting for the movie to add something new about Glinda beyond what the play already explains. Unfortunately, that’s where I found it lacking. The additional context I was looking for ended up on the cutting room floor in the newly released deleted scenes. I believe the story would’ve been richer if those scenes, especially between Elphaba and Glinda, had been kept. I personally wanted-and clearly needed-to see more of Glinda’s redemption arc rather than just being told they’re best friends. We see so much of Glinda’s former self in the first act, and I would’ve loved even a glimpse of how she’s grown after the Ozdust Ballroom scene and “Popular.” Reading your comments has helped me find some clarity through your observations, but I want to remind you that this is just a reaction. Specifically a reaction to part one of a longer narrative that has a part two. I hope we get flashback scenes to complete both Elphaba and Glinda’s arcs with each other. You’re watching me work through my thoughts live. At the end of the video, I even say I’m not sure where I land-and I think that’s beautiful. Not being sure means the material made me think. And honestly, after filming from 11 PM to 6 AM, I’m surprised I could think at all 😭🤣. Again, thank you so much for watching-I hope you enjoyed 💕🫧🧹. • Wicked was so GOOD, I let my intrusive thoughts win and talked the whole way through the movie. A real reaction commentary if you will. I'm sorry for how long this video is lmfaoo. And yes, i will address the, um, what did Glinda say? problem in the room: the quality of this video isn't the best. The glitches, the slight blurriness in different areas. I think Elphaba cast a spell on my filming equipment, and honestly... can we just ignore it? She's been through enough, and I don't think she deserves the added criticism when the audio is at least perfectly fine? My girl was just tryna help like always, and I can't allow my sister to be further villainized when it's genuinely not a big deal‼‼ LMFAOOO but fr it took me so long to film this reaction, so I said y'all are gonna have to bare with me because I didn't have time to refilm and I can't repeat or remember candid moments after I already said them. I'm definitely working on trying to fix the problem in future videos. It must be a software issue or camera issue (i desperately need an upgrade, so this tracks) , but THANK YOU for watching and putting up with the quality. If you didn't notice anything, ignore this and just tell me your thoughts about the movie 🫡🥰💕🫧🧹

When Glenda says to Elphaba “Maybe you’re not as powerful as you think you are”. I think she was saying it to talk her out of going too far, and that it’s actually something she believes about herself. That’s why she doesn’t go with her, because she felt deep down it was beyond her capacity to help in the way Elfie needed.

Ouuuuu yess i can see this too. I couldn't figure out if she was projecting or if she meant it wholeheartedly because up until that point Glinda hasn't really projected her own personal feelings about herself onto any else, so i couldn't be sure what her intentions were at that moment. I love your interpretation, tho!! It adds to why she was so heartbroken at the end. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

I love this reaction and I see you trying so hard to figure out Glinda and honestly, she’s such a nuanced character and I think it’s important to remember that she really does love Elphaba, but the way in which Elphaba chooses to go against the wizard and be an enemy of the state is just something that Glinda knows she can’t do. Unlike Elphaba, she has no magic and her only power is in her popularity, so if she goes with Elphaba and gets herself also labeled as a fugitive, she’s giving up her only leverage. She believes she can do more from the inside and so she has to choose a path that’s not with Elphaba. It’s incredibly tragic cause as we see in No One Mourns the Wicked, she’s lost the only people who to her, Elphaba and Fiyero and she’s alone.

Yessss i love this analysis!!! I came to the same conclusion at the end of the video because Elphaba was, in fact, an enemy of the state, and there wasn't much Glinda could do about that. I tried my best to figure out Glinda, but i was still going back and forth because she's a complex character whose motivation still avade me lol. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

when it comes to Glinda, it's important to remember that she represents performative activism to an extent - she becomes what the masses need her and want her to be, and she will pretend to be an ally for attention, even though she doesn't really care about what's happening to the animals. she reminds me of people who just aren't concerned about things if they dont directly affect them - so her entire attempts to stop Elphaba at the tower aren't due to her being condescending or manipulative - I think she is genuinely concerned for Elphaba but she also believes she is way in over her head. Elphaba wants to pursue the downfall of Oz's venerated leader, who has the social power Elphaba does not. Glinda is scared for her, and scared of this risk, and that's why she keeps telling her to stop and simply be complacent with what she's been given - because in Glinda's eyes, what does it matter if other citizens must pay if it means her having her comfortable, ideal life? This is where Glinda and Elphaba differ. They both start out on completely different paths. Elphaba cared for the downtrodden and the exploited because she has been in that position and knows what it's like. Glinda cannot sympathize with that position, she has been brought up a priviledged conventionally attractive caucasian woman who has never wanted for anything. She has parents who love and dote on her. She has admirers, but no friends. She has wealth and high social standing. Elphaba by contrast is an outcast, rejected by her parent save for Dulcebear, rejected to an extent by her sibling...and zero social standing. She has power AKA potential and she strongly believes in her cause, but she has no plan nor social power to carry it forth, and I think this is why Glinda is so frustrated with her as well. at some point during Defying Gravity however, there is a silent understanding that they can be on the same side while achieving these things differently utilizing both of their strengths. Unfortunately for Glinda, her greatest weakness is her greater strength. She is so good at making people like her and is so desperate for that that it actually works in her favor in their fight against The Wizard. Unfortunately, this comes at the price of having to play the part as Morrible and The Wizard's puppet. By contrast, Elphaba works through her powers. If Glinda had stayed with her, shed be next to useless with social power and no one to influence, given that the masses would be under the control of the Wizard. So while I can definitely see her actions coming across as dubious, I think Glinda means well - the problem is she means well mostly to Elphaba and does not seem to respect her cause at first. Only after she sees the extent Elphaba is willing to go does she decide to work with her: "dreams the way we planned them" followed by "IF we work in tandem - there's no fight we cannot win!" LOL watching your reaction video has been so much fun but I just wanted to share that perspective as I feel it is easy to miss during the high emotions of the scene. GREAT points about Glinda not knowing herself. You hit the nail on the head with that tbh.

Omg i love this explanation!!! I agree with everything you said here. I will admit the lack of onscreen friendship in the musical, and the movie has always bothered me about Wicked (lol, it's been 2 months since i listened to the soundtrack). I've always understood their individual paths, but I wish the movie developed their friendship together more. After watching the deleted scenes and seeing all of their sweet moments together or Glinda standing up for Elphaba at the train station against her father, the love they have for each other finally clicked!! A pet peeve of mine - that might've clouded my judgments while watching - is when tv shows or movies tell you people are friends, and you never quite see it. That's why i struggled so much with Glinda. Ariana did so much silent character work that if you were paying attention to anything else, you'd miss it, and i did. I would've loved to hear quick dialogue from Glinda here and there after Popular because the narrative shifted to only Elphaba and Glinda being there kinda silently. Hopefully, part two expands on that, and from what I've read, it has, so I'm excited for it!! And yay, I'm so glad you had fun. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

I loved your reaction because you can tell how much you wanted to understand the characters. I know some comments are saying you talked too much, but I disagree! Wicked isn't new to all of us and the story has been out for decades, so I don't blame you for having more commentary than reaction because you said you've listened to the soundtrack before, which spoiler alert, details the whole musical + movie. I rather someone watch intently and comment what they think rather than watching someone sit silently and go 'aww' 'oh' or 'interesting'. I could watch the movie by myself again instead. Keep up the videos Briana, your audience who loves your content will find you 🫶🏼🩵

The witch aesthetic is not meant to have existed before this. Glinda giving her the hat was not her giving her a witch hat. It was just an “ugly hat”. Her giving her the cape was not to make her look like a witch. That is not what witches look like in this world.
@briianasimone
@briianasimone 8 күн бұрын
Hmmmm I'm gonna push back on this a little bit because even though i know it wasn't intentional, Glinda had a direct hand in what the "wicked witch" looked like while she's juxtaposed as the good witch with light, airy and fairy like aesthetic. The moment where she picks the color of the road shows us she does know what aestheticly looks pleasing and what doesn't. Elphaba was dressed by her with the black hat, and then the black cap played a direct role in creating what the wicked witch looked like in her world. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

So I think if you look at the politics of Oz you'll understand Galinda better. Galinda considers image as incredibly important, and in the Oz we see depicted here ruled by "the wizard" (in image alone) that is actually a very practical focus. Its an extremely image focused world. Galinda's greatest power is her capacity to influence public opinion, which is also her greatest flaw because she cares too much what people think of her. I believe she knows deep down that she's different and stifles and hides any parts of her that don't meet ideal expectations (there are strong arguments to be made for her being gay with very heavy comphet). She also shows more empathy than her peers at the beginning (amazing when you consider how low that bar is), its just a very immature and sheltered empathy that hasn't listened to marginalized communities and ends up doing the wrong thing thinking she's being "so nice". Until the Ozdust ballroom, where she gets it right, breaking free at least a little of the need for approval and concern about how she looks to others and just tapping into what she knows to be right. Through her closeness with Elphaba she learns that being different isn't wrong, and starts to find her own moral compass. She also starts leading the way instead of following. You see her being genuinely supportive and happy for her friend, even as Elphaba gets what she always dreamed of for herself. I think she always had that capacity in her, but when she viewed Elphaba as an enemy we didn't see it (and it grew as she started developing greater self awareness). At the end she's trying to diffuse the situation because she's worried they're both going to die. We've seen so many superhero movies we detach from how insane (and yes, incredibly courageous) it is to take on a dictator and entire nation of *devoted* followers alone. And while, to Elphaba, the wizard revealed he had no power, Glinda recognizes the power of public opinion so all he revealed is that he's dangerous not powerless. She likely thinks they can do more good from inside the system (and alive). I actually think for Glinda that's probably true, if she went with Elphie she'd be a sidekick without her power ("very shrewd to be..."). She'll have to retain her sense of self and moral conscience as she's used by evil people against her friend and what she knows is right though, so we'll see if she manages it. She could also be swallowed up in her need for approval. Elphaba will also have to retain her sense of self and conscience as she navigates being the most powerful witch in Oz. Power can consume a person, too.

@ceceliam9014 omg first of all, thank you for commenting this!! I love reading your analysis because after giving it some thought, i think you're spot on. Since this is only part 1, i hope they include some moments where we get to hear Glinda talk about the internal struggle she's facing. I think that is what is missing for me and why I debated so much about her. I also wish they included more of the deleted scenes between Elphaba and Glinda because they support the overall narrative of Glinda better. I love your explanation on the politics of Oz because I think i only scratched the surface. I saw the moments of which image is important, but i don't think I followed that thread as deep as I could've, so I'll definitely be keeping this in mind while watching part 2 or even as I watch the movie or listen to the soundtrack again. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

@briianasimone For sure! Glad it was helpful! I was also just thinking that the consequences for being different in Oz are not small either, if we consider what happens to the animals and to Elphaba. So one can see why a person might seek safety in obsessively "fitting in". I found a lot of this came in a slow burn as I listened more to the songs, learned more about the lore and the books, and rewatched the movie. The metaphors are verrry rich, and I think if you start from a place where you know this is a story that explores all the nuances of being different, then you'll start to see so much depth in the characters that isn't told in an overt way, but is still there 😁 This story also deals strongly in ambiguity, they don't necessarily directly tell us what the characters are going through in overt terms.
@briianasimone
@briianasimone 7 күн бұрын
@ceceliam9014 Yes, i wholeheartedly agree about the consequences of being different. My biggest gripe about Elphaba being different is that it was only for a lack of a better phrase, skin deep. She was immediately accepted after Glinda stood up for her at the Ozdust Ballroom. If her father didn't immediately other her at birth, especially since he has influence as governor, i think her childhood would've been different. I hate how fickle Oz truly is because Elphie didn't have to struggle. The animals are a whole other story, tho. They were targeted so the Wizard could stay in power, which the festered the obsession for fitting in and I hated every second of Dr. Dillmonds treatment because it was at the hands of a paranoid man. Lol, and yes, i love a good metaphor, but sometimes the overt is needed, especially in movies because it doesn't exactly convey the same thing the book does.
@ceceliam9014
@ceceliam9014 7 күн бұрын
@@briianasimone Yeah, what happens to the animals is targeted, and the metaphor of the ruler taking away their voices is so strong. Actually, for me Galinda's most irredeemable moment is when she keeps correcting the pronunciation of her name, even when the reason is explained to her. She's an absolute bitch in that scene. I like that the story punishes her for that one, and even better she punishes herself by awkwardly falling into declaring herself Glinda... She kind of ends up having to wear that lesson and the petty in me kind of appreciates that. (Another moment could be the hat, but I think her friends just mocked a hat from her grandma that she may very well have loved and then directly told her to give it to Elphaba... So that one feels more complex) It's absolutely true that there was no reason outside of prejudice for them to otherize Elphaba. And her dad was a POS. I haven't read the book, but a good friend of mine who's non binary (and has been obsessed with this story forever) says it's strongly implied in the book that Elphaba is born intersex, which adds another layer to the metaphor of greenness (aside from the definite skin colour connection) as a "difference" that people hate her for. Her greenness (and any deviation from the expected and enforced norms that it represents) doesn't change the fact that she's a genuinely good person and being ostracized like that was never fair or right. It hurts to see her going through this and highlights the absurdity of a society that would ostracize someone for something so unrelated to her depth and value as a human being. And the power Galinda had to influence people accepting her only went so far, as it's clear she's out of her depth as the rulers of their land declare her a wicked witch, claiming her greenness is an outward manifestation of the evil inside her. The prejudice of society can run deep.
@ceceliam9014
@ceceliam9014 7 күн бұрын
@@briianasimone Also, I'm probably often going to interpret Wicked from the lens of a queer person, because I'm bisexual. And also dealt with really strong comphet which probably helped me relate so strongly to Glinda once she started to show more of who she is. I don't presume to know the experiences of being a person of colour (or being intersex). The layers you can see in this story might be very different than the ones I see. I'm the kind of different that has the option to "pass" or fit in in situations where I could be in danger, and not everyone has that privilege. (Edit: I think the comment I made before this may have disappeared 🤔 Unless the comment settings just aren't showing it to me. Let me know if you can't see a comment before this one and I can try to remember what I said, lol)

towards the end when glinda says “maybe you’re not as powerful as you think”, i do think she means to be condescending, but i think it’s more in hopes that elphaba will back down and comply, bc glinda truly just wants the easy way out for both of them. she’s been handed everything on a silver platter, and i think it’s hard for her to deal with a situation this complex.

I agree, also Glinda mentions wings before that condescending comment (“Where are your wings?”) so in her mind, she also thought Elphaba was casting wings to escape alone, essentially leaving her. It’s not until the broom comes and Elphaba propositions her to join on the broom that we see Glinda having some form of hope in Elphaba’s choice to go against the Wizard publicly. I think she was angry, afraid and fearful of being left behind as well and it’s not until she really thinks about joining Elphaba does she realise that she wouldn’t be of any help in Elphaba’s crusade as “public enemy #2”.

In the book it's Madame Morrible, but the scene plays out very differently. It's a poetry slam and Morrible kicks it off. The last line of her poem is "animals should be seen and not heard." Dillamond storms out and Elpheba gets upset at Morrible who justifies her actions by saying that art is supposed to make people feel things. So the idea of Morrible writing those words to get Elpheba upset in the musical definitely lines up.

In the beggining of defying gravity, when Glinda wants Elphaba to be reasonable and talk with the wizard, she's trying to stop Elphie from further ruining her reputation. From Glinda's POV, Elphie can destroy the system from the inside out on the long run while not being villanized by all of Oz in the process. Since Elphaba has all the power, she can just convince the wizard that what he is doing is wrong and he won't be able to fight back since the powerful one is Elphaba. They both see the situation differently because they have experienced life in way different ways. Glinda knows the power of facades and popularity, while Elphaba has always been excluded from society and cannot fathom working with the enemy for the greater good. So, I disagree with your commentary towards the end. Glinda may be vain and shallow at times, but she is not an evil character as you are trying to convey :(.

Glinda is white feminism personified. Born privileged, she was racist towards Elphaba from the VERY beginning. She still doesnt care about dr Dillamond or the animal race at the end of part 1 (and *spoiler* even part 2) simply because she just doesn’t care about anything else but herself. She sees herself as the standard of the society, so anything challenging that is below her and she puts label of “goodness” on herself by “tolerating” them. She still refers to dr dillamond as the old goat btw. Oh you are not ready for part 2 for all the nasty things she’s gonna do. She came around at the end (the veeeeery end) but it was too late. That’s her character arc. I truly cannot fathom how many people (in this case, the actress’ stans) have tried to justify her character. She was truly rotted to her core and that’s okay because it’s VERY important for her character development. That’s literally the message.

This is definitely where i was coming from in this reaction. I think some people who've sat with Glinda, empathize, or have related to her for years see themselves in her. So i think is has less to do with Ariana portraying her and more to do with people relating to Glinda’s brand of 'good' and redemption for decades at this point. I, however, do not, and I couldn't have that perspective while watching. I think a lot of people have issues accepting things as they are and instead skip to the good. I could've focused on the little notes I saw that showed Glinda was willing to change her former attitude, but I had to address how she was before and how damaging that was to Elphaba. I would've gotten into it more, but I was tired asf by the end of the reaction lol. I also couldn't cut in and added a note like I did for other scenes, but i didn't expect people to not see where I was coming from so much, lol. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

i don't understand why you keep questioning Glinda, in the last scene. All of her love, smile, friendship, crying, mad, and everything is genuine but only toward Elphie. Glinda sing Defying Gravity is really genuine, like she really want to fly away with Elphie, but it's like she snap out of it. like as we know, she a people person, and she looking for image, so flying with elphie is not her interest. but that small second of she singing Defying Gravity is really from her heart. and i know you skipped the "I Hope you are happy, My Friend" for youtube. in that scene Both Elphie and Glinda already know they both just have different dream and path and everything, they both know they probably become enemy in the future but they still happy for each other and hoping for each other best. Summary : all feelings and word Glinda said toward Elphie is genuine, and probably the only one. Not her parents, Fiyero, Schoolmates, The Wizard, Mrs Morrible

@jodiejoynt2737 i repeatedly said I was confused by Glinda because I simply am, lol? I don't think it's a bad thing to candidly say that I'm confused by something. I can see her moments of being genuine, but defying gravity confused me because all of the genuine moments were superseded with Glinda trying to convince her to stay. For me personally the stage adapatations works with little context because of time restraints, but seeing as this was a long movie I believe we should've gotten more scenes of them being friends and genuinely understanding one another other than the moments after the ozdust ball room and popular. This adapatations was very true to the musical, but i think the movie should've said more. I also haven't sat with the material long enough to really form conclusions to my own questions, so this a live look at me working through them. Thank you for watching and commenting 💕🫧🧹

Whether you like galinda or not, at her core, she was just a coward. All the defences of her still amount to that. A self-centred coward. And she looks even worse in the Wizard of Oz, where she was really just evil. She caused the wicked witch of the West’s death on purpose, and she risked Dorothy‘s life for really no reason other than her own apparent amusement. But let’s say that’s a different universe. She still doesn’t look good either way you look at it. Just because she may “care“ for Elphaba a little more or she may make sad faces or whatever it is, there’s still really no defending this character, lol.

@@briianasimone You're welcome! A Wolf midwife and a Bear nanny are perfectly normal and yet this innocent little girl is reviled because she was born green-skinned? That speaks for just how ridiculously arbitrary that it is. Elphaba might be prickly and defensive, but given what she has had to put up with from others it's totally justified; she's been the scapegoat since she was born, even for things that were never her fault. Like her cold, narcissistic father who spoils and dotes on Nessarose while simultaneously undermining her autonomy. People are so unreasonably cruel to her without bothering to know her and yet she's so compassionate and considerate to others, including Galinda, even when she foisted Boq onto Nessarose and then invited her to the dance to humiliate her. And Nessa... as much as Elphaba loves her little sister, Nessa is an ungrateful little brat who gives her so little in return, even when Elphaba steps in to clean up her messes.

@squallyz19 i think i questioned her so much because a lot of her characterization were in small moments, while everyone else had bigger moments or dialogue to support them. While i don't always need a movie to explicitly state each characters motivations, I wish Glinda would've gotten just a tad bit more characterization. Everything with her is implied, and I would've loved to hear what the movie had to say about it's interpretation of her. I also don't know if i can agree that Glinda has no power. It might not be to the strength of Elphaba's physical power, but she does have the power of influence. I do agree that she was to keep Elphaba from confronting the Wizard and Madam Morrible. First and foremost, you did exactly what you were supposed to do. React to the movie and give your unfiltered thoughts. You did a fantastic job. I think that a lot of Glinda's arc revolves around finding her own voice, a lot like Elphie's, just in a different way. Glinda is used to using her charm and "popularity" to get her own way, by the end of the movie, I think she's trying to figure out how to use what she's good at in a way to help Elphie, but doing that means not going with her. She doesn't have magic and she knows it, so I think she felt that she would just hold Elphie back. I believe her intentions were to stay behind and try to reason with Madame Morrible and the Wizard, although misguided because Morrible makes no secret of her disdain for Glinda from the very beginning.

I really don't think Glinda's choosing herself only and power with the Wizard and through Defying Gravity. She's scared and she's trying to protect (them both). Even through Defying Gravity she starts being mostly worried about defusing it - initially for protection (not because she can't see Elphaba's point), but then - when she sees Elphie's determined and can't be talked out of action (and that the state has already committing to demonising her) she allows herself (and themselves) that verse of dreaming everything could be alright flying off together, but never truly believing it. Whether the final decision to stay is cowardice or the hope she could help by staying on the inside (or most likely a bit of a mix of both), what it never is is betraying her friend - and Elphie's wink of "its OK, I get why you have to stay" after putting on the cloak is her confirmation that she's OK - she understands why Glinda can't come and she doesn't feel betrayed by it, which is why they can finish with a final "I hope you're happy, my friend". It hurts them both, but they both understand each other and are both genuinely wishing the best for each other (even while knowing things probably will get messier).

I think it's also important to consider the perspective of everyone that's not Elphaba as normal people. They are not politically powerful, they are just people living their lives, and so is G(a)linda. She doesn't have "status" but she does have clout and is otherwise just a small time celebrity. Elphaba has none of that, nothing to lose and fed up with how the world works. The others haven't really faced what she has so they're able to just look away or go with the flow when things like the animal oppression is happening. When Glinda hears the truth about the wizard, she's obviously not an advocate for what he stands for but what could she do? She is a normal person with no real power. What could any of us do seeing political corruption at that level? Glinda understands that true power is in appearances (literally the entire song Popular - it's not about aptitude, it's the way you're viewed) so going against the wizard then would be going against all her instincts, and also not exactly a great move. Elphaba on the other hand has always been in a worse position and forced to restrain herself so this makes sense as a move for her. Glinda tries to calm her down and have her make peace with the wizard so that she could act the way she always does, through her influence from safety instead of being public enemy #1. When Elphaba refuses and insists on being radical, she accepts it and prays for her happiness and safety. Both of their characters are wonderful, and this contrast makes the story so interesting. I really enjoy how Glinda's self centeredness is tempered with her empathy since she really isn't a bad person, but without changing her as a character. She's still Glinda, but with a deeper flavor. It's great character work unlike in a lot of other media where a scene like the ozdust would have a character do a complete 180 which is less believable imo.

@Jobo89 lol, no worries. I'll take the funny tho 🤭🤣. I personally love when people talk through their thought process while reacting because I've already watched what their reacting to. I mainly watch for their commentary, so I made the content i like to see, but it's understandable that not everyone likes all the chatting. Thank you for watching anyway 💕🫧🧹

@@briianasimone don't worry! I much prefer someone talk during film reactions (as long as they don't miss important plot beats or details). I don't come to rewatch the movie, I come to hear their thoughts! i'm only 15 min in so far but loving it, keep doing what you're doing :)

(this is long sorry) I think the movie does an excellent job of using 'show don’t tell' for Galinda’s arc. The first part of the movie we see her do mean things under the pretense of ‘good’, she offers to ‘help’ Elphaba with her skin, she gets history class ‘back on track’. She tries to use ‘goodness’ to maintain the status quo. Elphaba is out of the norm so at first she treats her with condescending pity and then disdain but never the actual disgust the other students show. And that’s important to note leading up to the dance. Galinda gives Elphie the hat in a fit of jealously and immediately thinks twice but moves on, however when she realizes that Elphaba truely took her petty prank as a genuine act of kindness and was then shunned for it she steps out of her comfort zone and reaches out with kindness. That’s her first act of true goodness and it is caused by her abandoning her status for a moment. But she doesn’t abandon her ideals, we first see that when Elphaba talks about her parents. Despite it fully being her father’s predjudice that unltimately leads to her mother’s death Galinda still blames the flowers because in her mind Govenor Thropp wasn’t wrong for trying to avoid another ‘anomaly’. She then lays out her philosophies in Popular. Not to mentiion her idea of protesting was simply changing her name slightly. It’s why she’s so willing to hear the Wizard out, she feels she can do more in life with her popularity than with direct action. Wicked is, at it’s core, a tragedy caused by differing ideals. Elphaba and Glinda love each other but at the end of the day neither of them is willing to give up in their personal beliefs and unfortunately they differ.

Glinda has always dreamed of being a sorceress...she saw this as her achieving her goals. Glinda loves Elphaba...but thier paths are at a crossroads. That's why she's so torn.
