This video is about how to improve peripheral vision training for martial artists.
Using the hand chasing drill in this video you can dramatically improve your ability to see your opponent's telegraphs and thus see their strikes before they throw them.
Use the drills in The Vision Gym to improve your sports vision.

Thanks for this. I just started boxing and I can't keep my eyes on the strike instead leaving this for my peripheral vision.. i know i should look straight to my opponent's body or shoulders..but can't help myself focusing on the strike. Thanks for this.

Watch chest muscles, they are first give away.if you focus on the strike only one little fake outs gonna get you cleaned up from the other side. It's the one you don't see that hurts the most. I found a tip for reacting to fast jabs is to focus on the colour of the gloves, if you see red move parry it, just think red parry. So.... watching the chest all times, red/parry you should have enough time to defend against other strikes. Also if he is watching you're eyes fake him, look lower left Body shot, move in quick fake it and right hook.

This seems great for defense but seems extremely hard to land an accurate strike while using peripheral vision, any thoughts?

Great question. While we should aim to keep our eyes more or less on the sternal notch and use near peripheral fields, there certainly are times when our eyes need to quickly switch to a specific target and get focus ASAP. This is called a saccadic eye movement and is one of the drills on the Vision Gym. So let's say you are doing a low kick to the knee, you would need to shift your eyes to the knee to ensure accuracy and just as soon as you can you would shift them back to the sternal notch in order to locate your next target as well as be prepared for a counter strike. Quick eyes make quick fighters & athletes. Cheers

@@BrianCopelandJKD Thanks for the reply! that makes sense, another thought, if you are focusing on your opponents sternal notch, are you not in fact focusing your eyes on a specific target rather than using peripheral vision?

@@gerdin2 Another good question. You "fix" your eyes there but don't "look" at anything. Grab your phone and pull up something that has a letter on it. Now fix your eyes on that letter and start walking. Don't trip and fall and keep your eyes fixed there. What you are now doing is using your peripheral fields while fixing your eyes. The really aren't reading the letter or seeing the detail of the letter. Rather you are fixing your eyes and paying attention to what is above, below, right, left, and diagonally all around. This very drill is called "Peripheral Walking" and is on the Vision Gym product. There is a book called See to Play by Dr Michael Peters OD where he explains how he uses this with professional athletes from NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and Olympians. You can probably find his "near peripheral vision chart" online for free with instructions on how to use it.

Nah its easy to land, if your watching the chest you know where the head is and you can see it in in peripherals., also in you foveal vision, better to focus on colour of say his red gloves and just drill into your head red parry, red parry red parry, because in foveal view if you see it coming is a jab, the rest peripheral will catch the movement quicker (peripheral is colourblind)

That's all well and good until someone verses you who is pro and your throwing fakes, using eye distractions, and switching stances.

...so what exactly is the "take away" of your comment, don't train because a pro is better than you?

@@BrianCopelandJKD nah I'm saying training where to look and peripheral visions great for starters, but someone like you would know how to drag the eyes, find angles blocking peripherals, or body faking crosses but actually shifting positions, you would be hard to beat. I'm just a twice a week amautuer. I like your vids though. Do you do aswell against southpaws/do you think there is an advantage?
@BrianCopelandJKD
@BrianCopelandJKD 2 жыл бұрын
@@filthyan1mal588 Ok thanks for clarifying. You are correct, against a fighter using distractions such as the ones you mention makes it even more important to control distance and use smart tactics to enter safely. And of course to get good at those types of distractions as well. I personally prefer to fight southpaw and for me one of the advantages against an orthodox fighter is that I can move to their outside (left) much easier. That takes away their right hand and right kick so I have less to worry about. Cheers brother
