Malazan is in my opinion, the greatest fantasy series ever written. The depth, complexity and history of the world is just mind blowing. Every time I read his books, I have this problem where everything else feels too basic and simplistic. It’s so good in fact, I think they should be studied at college/university.

I love your excitement and sense of drama about the material. Writers seem like some of the biggest fanbois of them all, and I dig it...

I just finished the series last week - and as you said, Malazan really offers something unique. Beyond everything in the books, sharing that kind of relatable experience with others who have read the series is my favorite part about it. I also would rate Gardens of the Moon higher than many others do. It is definitely to most underappreciated Novels of the Saga. Looking forward to the other reviews.

10 parts confusing, 10 parts brilliance. Couldn't have put it any better my self. That really is the joy of Malazan though, always on your toes, always kept guessing. Not to mention the writing is top tier and Erikson weaves philosophy and theme into his books so so well!
@B.LEE.DbrianleedurfeeREVIEWS4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I didn't even touch on all the philosophical stuff crammed into these books. Dont let me forget to touch on that when I review bk2

I like your name dropping. Very interesting backstories and wow you have the coolest collection of fantasy book. (Im jealous you have the whole Malazan in hardback.) You’ve been collecting for so much longer than other people on KZbin, you’ve read SO much more than others who do reviews like this, you’ve met many of the authors, you yourself have published books and this experience gives you credibility that is unmatched. Really enjoy watching. Thanks!

Brian! This is the best Erikson review ever... right there in my face where it should be... I’m reading House of Chains now and I know I’ve got me a friend for life in the Malazan books. Took a leap of faith and jumped right into Gardens of the Moon and - bungeeee. Btw love your setup - those red lights and all - cool man.

Read it the first time I was, WTF, you just get dropped into everything at once. It was liked being attacked from all sides. After I finished, I said huh what happened. Read it again a year later. This time I made my own notes and character lists, helped but still a very difficult read that takes 110% attentiveness, but as all tell me it's worth it. I have to get back to this series again and push thru. Brian as always a great and passionate review.

I would love it if you shared a video on how you can read 100 pages an hour. I'm reading for years and I read at about 25- 30 pages an hour and I want to speed up, so I can read more books!

@@B.LEE.DbrianleedurfeeREVIEWS Nah, since it's a group read thing and I don't want anyone to feel left behind (due to the supposed heaviness), it's going to be 5 per year over the course of 2021-22. That way, the Malazan veterans that are re-reading can throw in all of the side novels, too, in a "chronological" read. But I'll just be doing the 10 beastly books.

As the books skip around the world, a friend started me on Midnight Tides, so I read GotM as my second book of the series. I think that made GotM a little less chaotic to read, and I really liked it better than the next couple books. I'm paused on Memories of Ice (took a break), but I plan to restart the series in January with Mike's Book Reviews.
@DanielGFreeman3 жыл бұрын
I had taken a break from this series after the second book, and now I'm reminded that I have quite a lot to get back to. I started the readalong with Mike's Book Reviews and it seemed times I was reading coincided with pretty traumatic events in my life (GOTM, mom was hospitalized, DG, mom went back in and lost a leg, then we lost her not long after.), Which is why I initially paused on the series. These events in my life while reading what I would classify as pretty dark content just put me in a bad space. Now I'm coming out of my funk and am feeling like I might be up to taking on the challenge that is Malazan 🤞

Hey Brian I've got a hot book for you: I've read it myself and I agree with the accolades it's won: such as the British Bram Stoker's Horror Fantasy Award🤯( to mention a few). Can you guess the title...? DUSK😱by Tim Lebbon. If I ever recommended a dud🤪 this is not it. Right from the first page it grips you. And I pray you arrive upon the realisation that the solution is at hand. As always ✊🏾 Barakha 🙌🏾 Shalom 🌾🙏🏾

I don't mind a challenge, I just couldn't connect with the characters. I liked Tattersail, but as I remember, just as I was getting into her story, the POV switched.

I attempted to read this book three times. I felt nothing for the characters; I didn’t care about them at all. It was not an enjoyable experience. I only tried three times because everyone said it was great. I guess I disagree with everyone; this is not masterpiece to me. And I tried to like it. You’re all mad 😂!
@theriddler22774 жыл бұрын
so many people that bounce off it get so mad when we tell them they read it to fast, it's sad that the objective for so many is to read as fast as possible and having a dense story is a negative for them. it is the crowning jewel in fantasy.

Skim readers are annoying when they think a book is "to slow" they would DNF the book then negatively review and whine about it.
@captainnolan50622 жыл бұрын
I stopped watching at 0:20 because I don't want spoilers; but did you ever mention... "The Gardens of the MOON" and "The Forgetting MOON ", both of your and Erickson's first books contain a prominent "Moon" as the last word in the title.

I tried this one, and definitely didnt get into to it.! The writing style, is just not for me. I also have to say the names of places and certain names could also be a tad more --- Authentic maybe?
