We are living in a time in the Church when social justice seems to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind, and I think this is largely the result of the emphasis of Pope Francis who has made talking about the needs of the poor a priority.
But one thing that is true of a crisis is that it will test the sincerity of certain beliefs and how committed people are to them, especially if it starts to cost them something and I would say recent events did just that.
And it makes me wonder that for the people who talk about social justice the most, do they actually understand what the Church even teaches about social justice and even if they do, are they sincere when they rehearse those concepts in conversations that will portray them as those most committed to the needs of the poor?
Whenever you explore Catholic social teaching, you will inevitably collide with the concepts of solidarity and subsidiarity and many respectable commentators and instructors on the subject will point out that if you ever want to evaluate and compare some system or fabric of society for its compatibility with Catholic social teaching, you should look to see if they get these two things right.

I would say that the smallest point for subsidiary is the individual human, and that each larger group should only impose to protect the lower. The family exists to protect individuals, cities/towns/counties exist to protect families, states exist to protect cities/towns/counties, countries exist to protect states, and inter-government associations exist to support countries.

I thought about the Individual being the lowest/base level too... but I like how Brian specified family as the base, because, as the JPII quote says, it is "communities" of higher and lower order... If subsidiarity began at the Individual level, then the rule would be that the family should not intervene except when absolutely necessary... That would have some very unhealthy consequences, and isn't the nature of family or community. Our Americana, placing Individual rights and liberty as the highest good, is likely how we have begun to 'define reality' and have 'my truth' the way modern society often does. Because the American paradigm starts with Me, rather than family.

@@matthewbateman6487 I don’t believe individual rights are connected to the silly “my truth” nonsense. The “my truth” is based more on psychological and secular stuff, more “new age” stuff. Individual rights have to do with the most basic of human rights-life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. freedom to practice your religion, freedom of speech-every song can be sung, every book can be read-the right to have a fair trial if accused of a crime, etc. “my truth” is a newer thing, unfortunately it really screws people up in their minds. Not everyone has a nuclear family, once mom and dad are gone, My grandpa left everyone he knew and came over here from the previous Czechloslavakia- after WW1, he was an individual in this country and his individual rights were very important. Don’t blame the “my truth” stuff on individual rights.

To top that, I cannot receive any unemployment insurance money from the government, a setup that I have been paying into for 20+ years per the gov’s request for this exact circumstance. Yet they denied me even this. I cannot make a living here. I have to leave the state of my birth.

Brian, you’re voice is very clear. I’m glad to see you using your talent. I found out something during covid. The church that you referred to, one we should turn to in times of confusion and crisis, has never really ever failed us. The Church is not clouded by human sins, human nature, human failings. The Church is perfect, mystical. If I can’t turn to our Pope, our Bishop, our priest for guidance, I can surely use the grace from their exercise of the Holy sacraments to turn to The Father, Son, Holy Ghost, ever Virgin Mary, the Angels, Saints for guidance. A priest once told me that the church is 99% failed humanity and 1% Holy, Supernatural Spirit. Well, I now believe the Church is 99% Supernatural and 1% failed humanity. God Bless you and your family. I hope this helps. Pray for all of us who fail.

I don't know who said it, but some time ago I came across a quote that went something like, "If you have to combine the words 'social' and 'justice' into 'social justice,' what you get is neither social nor just." It got me thinking. Justice is for the good of society overall. If it's restricted to one class, then it's neither just nor good for society. Also I'm impoverished, albeit living like a queen compared to the poorest in the world. I was born poor and have spent my life trying to work my way out of poverty, but programs supposedly designed to help the poor only slapped me back down. For instance, the health insurance mandate in the US. "Obamacare," they call it. First, it led my employer to eliminate my job category, and to contract with a temp agency to hire temporary workers to do my job. I went through the temp agency, taking a pay cut along with a deep cut in hours. The cutting of hours was the biggie -- it was done to keep the agency from having to offer health coverage to me. Eventually I began to train for a different field, requiring the expense of certification and documentation to be renewed every 5 years. Unfortunately, in the 3rd year, I was laid off, and wasn't called back until late in the 4th year. I didn't have health coverage while I was laid off, so I had to pay the penalty to the IRS. No income, pay up! That didn't help me out of poverty. I didn't have the resources to renew my documents. So I was slapped back down. SJWs use me as a mascot for their own selfish purposes. I don't say that with rancor, it's just an observation.

Were you this animated when the so-called BLM riots descended on the US and Canada, or in response to the decapitations of statues throughout English-speaking North America? Government selection of what to call a riot led to a general sense that “anything goes.” Inaction in response to BLM violence harvested the trucker convoy. Lawlessness begets lawlessness. As a non-Catholic, much respect to Catholic social teaching. I'm so glad you brought up inflation. Printing money out of thin air in fact is the exact opposite of both aspects. Not only does it cut the knees out from under the regular person's purchasing power, but you're basically selling current and future generations into debt slavery. In effect, inflation is essentially an excessove tax on basically anyone who isn't wealthy and holding a diversified asset portfolio. What's even worse is that it's possible now more than ever for people to learn financial literacy so they can do even what little they can to stay afloat with certain assets, but we're deliberately being given poor financial literacy in our education (which is precisely why too many people claim to believe socialism is a good idea). I can't speak for Canada, but I imagine it isn't any better where I live in America. The fact of the matter is that in the US, unless you got a 7% raise in the last year, you have objectively lost money based on the value of our money today compared to what it was a year ago. This is a video that should be seen and a lesson that must be learned by anyone who profess Christ, Roman Catholic or otherwise.

It's lovely to announce that you, in the gov't, will be handing out money.. it's a real slodge to discuss and determine the definition of who really needs the assistance (income below N level; business demonstrably impacted to Nth degree; etc.) , how much aid would be the minimum effective, how to pay it (check/cash, voucher for specfic goods or services), where you would get that money, how to determine fraudulent claims and then the will to prosecute fraudulent assistance claims, etc. and figure things out accurately and act to get the aid to people before they suffer massively or the crisis is over.... all that stuff that doesn't produce clicks online or drama in the evening TV news.

Would you please consider doing a video on almsgiving, especially on how much to donate (percentage-wise), and if it should come only from income or also from assets. I read where the BVM’s parents every year donated one-third of their assets (crops and animals) to the temple, and another third to the poor, and kept one-third for themselves. Also, where to donate first? Parish? Local poor? how to reconcile the preferential option for the poor versus, perhaps, supporting priestly orders and thus evangelization and the saving of souls? When donating to the poor should we choose local, even if not Catholic, over distant but Catholic mendicant religious orders who only live off alms? Thank you.

The first thing you should do is distinguish tithing and almsgiving. One has a responsibility to support one's local church. Note that "tithe" means "tenth" which gives an idea of the amounts involved. Alms are above that. He could talk about that, but the exact amounts and charities are a matter of prayer and prudence with faith.

Question: How would subsidiarity (larger institutions interfering as little as possible in the affairs of smaller ones) apply to the Church as a whole?? As a convert from Protestantism, the Catholic Church is 'Top down' in a LOT of ways other Christian groups are not... Many Protestant groups are even suspicious of Catholicism BECAUSE it looks so much more communist in its polity.

Perhaps this will be helpful in understanding the top down structure of the Church. Truth is truth for alll ages andl all people. The Church's heirarchical structure reflects the heavenly heirarchy ( it is also reflected in nature; if one wishes to know the mind of God in this regard one should consider the natural order). The Church maintains and elucidates Truth in the forms of dogma and doctrine, which are inerrant. The Church provides guidance on the practical application of Truth. Traditionally,, the Church has relied heavily on local Ordinaries for discernmantl. For instance, the local Ordinary (i. e., the local diocesan Bishop) rules on the authenticity of visionaries and their visions for the entire Church. If anything is introduced, even from the Pope, that contradicts the Church's constant teaching, it is in error.

Hi, Matthew. Thanks for your question. I think that the best way to understand the related issues is to reframe and therefore rephrase the discussion. The issue is always the glory of God and the multiplication of grace. Grace builds on nature, and so it usually is scarcely noticeable, being so readily confused for the simple operation of natural principles. In most senses grace is most easily multiplied in the context of meaningful relationships. This is why we find doctrine embracing subsidiarity. For grace to be effective, however, it must correspond with nature, and so the Church pursues an ever more developed and refined understanding and proclamation of universal principles both of nature generally and human nature specifically and of the manner in which grace interacts with nature. These universal principles will not in themselves be subject to local variation, although their expression and implementation will naturally take on local qualities. Part of what this means is that solidarity and subsidiarity are not in competition with each other but rather represent the interaction of various considerations in pursuit of the mutual intention to optimize the multiplication of grace. Thus the Church teaches truths of revelation which are true for all, while local churches adapt its presentation and implementation to ever more local considerations.

@@luxetspes4837 Thanks -- To be clear, I am not against the Church being top down -- I think it makes plenty of sense for plenty of reasons. I respect that Truth needs a protector.. I'm not opposed to the Church being top down, I'm just curious to know how the Church would view itself in relation to the teaching that "a community of higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of lower order, depriving the latter of its functions" -- for instance, excommunications, suppressing the TLM, etc. Would the Church itself say, "this rule doesn't apply to us because our community is different from the ones to whom this rule pertains?"

I’m curious what the research is regarding how the vaccine was “utterly ineffective” at preventing young people from spreading the virus. I’m not trying to undermine you I am legitimately curious where you found this. Overall, I’m grateful that you’re willing to discuss these things that not a lot of people are talking about in Catholic circles, but I am still concerned about the idea that the vaccines didn’t work.

I'm curious too about the ineffectiveness of vaccines (and lockdown measures) on flattening the curve of the virus and limiting its impact on health, healthcare services and the wider economy. I'm also interested in how Brian is estimating the efficacy of any alternative approach he is advocating. He now has the benefit of hindsight and it's still not clear to me that whatever he is recommending (everybody do "the right thing"?) would have been better for anyone.

"The Church" is a spiritual state of mind. "My kingdom is not of this world", our Lord says. The "church" resides in the conscience of every individual. We need to go there, humbly and prayerfully to hear what the Good Lord (the still small voice) is saying.

1) Subsidiarity is about respecting the appropriate functions of each level of community, given the essential nature of each level; it is not about maximizing independence at the lowest possible level. 2) When the gov't prints money, it's not "fake" money, it's "fiat" money. Understand, that's just fundamentally our system: fiat currency. 3) The rise of prices in the housing market is obviously not a direct function of general inflation, so we shouldn't be conflating these issues. The question the housing issue raises seems to be, are you (Brian) then advocating gov't intervention in the housing market? Those are complex issues that the Church doesn't have any actual ready-made answers for. All the Church has to offer is vague gesturing towards solidarity and subsidiarity. And always remember: the Church, from her very nature, has a limited domain of competence -- as recent events have made abundantly clear. That's an important part of the "social justice" teaching of the Church and one clear application of the principle of subsidiarity. Often prudence requires just saying, "I don't know; I have no competence on this question."

I'm not a follower of the Catholic way in Christ. But as a follower of Christ, I stand shoulder to shoulder 98% of what you have said. All faith families of Christandom failed to resist the collective government encroachment of our Faith during the "crisis". Government is not God. God is God. Christ is the only one that can save us from any crisis. Government in most cases is the creator of crisis. All the followers of Christ need to put away our petty differences and unite against the evil that cares not our differences, just our destruction.

Sorry Brian I'll have to disagree with you on this one. "That which you do for the least....". Before the support programs kicked in it was exactly the most vulnerable or lower paid customer facing roles where the casualty rate was highest. The virus is a global phenomena. Like water it will go where it has least resistance. I don't see how local initiatives would have any impact? I share your concern on the impact of this money printing but that really started in the 70s(?) when the break was made with gold and the reliance of personal debt. We continue to elect politicians who kick that can down the road. Keep up the good work Brian, always good to start the weekend with your thought provoking output.

Correction: The teaching you refer from Saint John Paul II is not referred to the levels that you are stating. Is a teaching that refers to “Socialism and socialization” o communities. As is stated complete (not a little part) CEC 1883 Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which "a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co- ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good."

Interesting analysis. One critique -- the Henry VIII analogy of this syndrome having happened was a "regional" syndrome among the bishops of the time. It was to some extent "parochial" in proportion to the larger issue before us because the impetus to "do our part" came from the very top of the Church hierarchy instead of regional primates within the leadership. The shear force of the impact of words and images from Francis bludgeoned subsidiaries (i.e. regional consortii of bishops/ bishops' conferences) into spreading that very destructive message thus placing upon the individual (and within the context of the lowest end of the subsidiarity spectrum -- families) that cognitive dissonance to the point of imposing a kind of "guilt" loadstone upon the very consciences of the individuals -- increasing and thus distorting what is otherwise normally a healthy tension between conscience driven action vis a vis magisterial driven action. Thanks for your exposition on the inseparability between solidarity and subsidiarity.

I'm sure everyone has probably heard the expression "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." In many ways this is the story and motto of the modern era. The heart of this story is that it is impossible to actually do good, without knowledge and understanding. First you must know what is actually good (moral judgement) and then you must know how to actually accomplish that good (prudential judgement). We in our current society poses neither moral judgement nor prudential judgement. In large degree we lost them precisely because the Christians of the last few hundred years mistakenly believed that all they needed was pietism and/or emotionalism. We have come to a place now where the things necessary to propagate and preserve moral judgement and prudential judgement are viewed as useless, impractical, waste of time, outdated, and so on. In other words, we are not only massively ignorant as a culture, we have become stupid as well. Stupid is very difficult to remedy. “Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever.” ― Aristophanes
