Hi Brian. Am a baker from India. Thank you for this foolproof recipe. I tried it and it came out awesome. I added some orange rind for an Orange shortbread version and the flavour was awesome. I have seen so many shortbread recipes and also tried some when I visited Scotland, but the fact that you did not add any liquid in the dough and let the stand mixer do its job was infact unique. Thank you for sharing your recipe and tips with the world 😀

I would 7ee a hand mixer but I've burned out the motor on 2 now, so I am more careful to use them on stuff that is not too stiff. My hands get tired on shortbread but I love it. So I 0ut up with it.

We never use a mixer in Ireland. You just have the butter at room temperature and cut it into chunks, rubbing it into the flour until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Then you stir in the sugar, then add a spoonful of water or milk to bring the dough together. Just press into a lightly greased baking tin and score the portions. Let it cool completely in the tin and dredge with caster (fine) sugar. We do not use rice flour, but sometimes use semolina.

Outside of the Scottish community, it really isn't well known due to its limited availability. It's also such an incredibly rich butter cookie, and with everybody these days either vegan, keto, paleo, gluten intolerant or on some other restricted eating plan, people pass it up out of necessity.
@Hellboy7002 жыл бұрын
@@msr1116 I don’t know about ‘out of necessity’ but I get what you mean otherwise. Food trends have a way of turning right back around to the place people began. Take for instance gluten. The vast majority of humanity is NOT gluten intolerant. Butter has both good and bad points on fat, same with Keto. And Vegans, the philosophy is good, but the execution is not the best. Unless you have a food allergy, eat what you like. As for shortbreads ‘limited availability’, this Chicago born, Texas raised American grew up eating it on holidays and on occasion with tea.

@@sadiakhann so you legitimately think there are human beings out there who think their grandparents give birth to them … stfu

So pleased you look after your grandma and preserve her recipes. My grandma 😊made an almond biscuit with half-skinned almonds pressed on top. They are soft but not too crumbly with a lovely almond taste. The best. Don't think I have a recipe so treasure these gifts from generations past

I use a recipe without the rice flour. I shall try your recipe with the rice flour. It makes sense. God will bless you for being so thoughtful of your grandparents. You honor your granny by using her recipe. My grandchildren give me such joy, as I'm sure you give yours. Merry Christmas.

Did you try it? How did it taste! Did it have rice flavor?
@jonkirkwood469 Жыл бұрын
@@spicywinter I did try it. No rice flavor. These go well with a cup of black coffee or a cup of Rooibos. (Sorry for the delayed response. I watched the video again 'cause I lost the recipe and will make these for my valentine.

In one short video I learned some good techniques, a new way to make shortbread, and got choked up. Damn. So nice to see generations interacting like friends, instead of the awkward "and...how are you?" I just learned that genealogists often track family ties, regions, and ethnicities using heirloom recipes. Please, document your family's recipes, Brian. It's such a treasure.

For old British grannies like me who are stuck in the dark ages and still use pounds and ounces I will offer this version! 12 ounces flour, 8 ounces butter(salted) , 4 ounces sugar, and 4 ounces rice flour. Cream butter and sugar and gradually add the flours. Press into a small tin and bake at 300 F for 45-60 minutes.
