Most countries wouldn't even be able to give them this. These sentences are harsh and for a person aged 15 at the time and 16 now will seem longer than their brains can literally manage to comprehend, people struggle to conceptualise time longer than their lives until that point. They might never be released but if they are truly remorseful and show evidence of improvement 20 years from now, yes they should be released, and if they don't they won't be. That's the criminal justice system and it's what we should want. No matter how shocking, they were children. Nobody is suggesting they don't deserve a life sentence, nor that the punishment period as in Scotland or minimum term as in England shouldn't be substantial, but children deserve to not be thought of, for the rest of their lives, by the worst thing they did. Its going to take a lot for them to get out, and rightly so, but they should be given at least a chance.

What about the girl they murdered for fun? So because they’re children they should get a 2nd chance? Where’s Brianna’s 2nd chance?
@PCDelorian
@PCDelorian 6 ай бұрын
@@cortneyrichardson8553 That's why they are getting life sentences. I can understand your point, but the purpose of the criminal justice system is supposed to be justice not vengeance. What happened to Brianna is awful but its not going to be undone by ruining their lives, punishing them is of course necessary but 20 years is longer than they can currently comprehend and it would make no meaningfully different impact to increase it. And yes, because their children they deserve a second chance, people do dumb shit when their kids, and whilst most don't go far as murder, committing childhood crime is not at all uncommon, we understand this and accordingly give them lesser sentences than adults with fully formed brains. They are not getting a guaranteed second chance, they are getting the chance to maybe one day leave the confines of the prison whilst remaining under restrictive conditions where they may be returned without notice nor trial.

@@LostHope84 in some cases you might be right, but how are they going to get therapy and less interventionalist treatment if biggoted people go around stigmatising and ultimately killing them? The answer is obviously to be a bit more compassionate and humane and make sure there is money and councellors available to help kids be happy with who they are, but no-one wants to talk about that, they just want to take the piss and issue commands about what trans people should and shouldnt do. I would never want to change my gender in a million years and I dont understand it myself. But I want to live in a free country where people can make choices about their bodies as individuals, I dont understand tattoos either but I am not petitioning to get people with tattoos mental health checks. Furthermore, someone who takes the piss out of peoples dead kids (not that I am saying you are) is far far more sick in the head than any trans person, thats just an unescapable fact that all the keyboard-warrior psychologists like to conveniently forget.

Kinda crazy that is fully accepted that Brianna can choose to change her gender and isn’t questioned at the age she was, but then two people can extensively plot to kill her and then go on to do so, but get a much more lenient sentence because essentially the law says they are too young to know any better… you can’t have it both ways.. if at that age you can legally decide to change your gender, then you must also be held fully accountable for any other actions you take, including murder.. these two knew exactly what they were doing and should be in prison until they die.

Also Also, one is a lifepath the other is a legal punishment, teenagers also pick which A-Levels they do, what career they want to pursue, because that's the age you decide who you want to be. Judges are human beings and many of them have families of their own. Of course this will get to them. Justice Yip apparently has three children. Justice Goss (who led the Lucy Letby trial) has five children of his own and given his age (recently turned 70) he is very probably also a grandfather as his children will probably be in their 30s at the very least. We have no idea how judges cope privately with such appalling cases and evidence. I'm absolutely sure there is help available for them, same as a jury would get.

The words used 'At His Majesties Pleasure' prior to announcing the number of years is a system whereby, and often used for young offenders, that the number of years can be indefinite. In most cases in English law, as far as I am aware, it means at the end of the term, they will will be reviewed rather than being simply released and are on a lifetime license, which means being subject to recall to prison at any time during their lifetime. It is a substitute for the inability to impose the full adult term.

So disrespectful to Brianna and her family! That pair should NEVER see the light of day again. They are nearly 18, not 10 - like the Bulger killers. 20 years, pft?!! How pathetic. I agree there was a proportion of hate crime, while also understanding it wasn't as simple as that or purely that. A shit load more of additional stuff, but it was there. Directly with the boy and with the girl in the ways that Breanna stood out to her and was viewed as a suitable victim. I think she was jealous of her personality too, and the attention she'd got on her website. One of the most disturbing crimes of my adult life, the sheer lack of humanity or empathy.

The judge took it all on board with an excellent summary in this brutal murder, there are no excuses they had tried to kill her with poison but succeeded in the most horrific way. She wasn’t even the only one on their kill list. These are two very dangerous people and I’m not sure I would ever want them released but unfortunately because of their ages they will be on the streets in the future. I’m not even sure people with this mind set can change or be helped. My thoughts and prayers go out to Brianna’s parents and family. Let people be who they want to be until we stop judging and society changes this will happen again as it has in the past. So sad.

Anything you say can and will be used in evidence against you, not for you! I loved the way the judge spun their attempts to get a lesser sentence by claiming some kind of diminished responsibility due to a mental impairment by using their own seemingly measured and considered reason for not showing remorse against them, very clever and quite right. However this does also serve as a reminder that when arrested wether you are innocent or not "no comment" is the only words you should utter.
