Most countries wouldn't even be able to give them this. These sentences are harsh and for a person aged 15 at the time and 16 now will seem longer than their brains can literally manage to comprehend, people struggle to conceptualise time longer than their lives until that point. They might never be released but if they are truly remorseful and show evidence of improvement 20 years from now, yes they should be released, and if they don't they won't be. That's the criminal justice system and it's what we should want. No matter how shocking, they were children. Nobody is suggesting they don't deserve a life sentence, nor that the punishment period as in Scotland or minimum term as in England shouldn't be substantial, but children deserve to not be thought of, for the rest of their lives, by the worst thing they did. Its going to take a lot for them to get out, and rightly so, but they should be given at least a chance.
@cortneyrichardson85536 ай бұрын
What about the girl they murdered for fun? So because they’re children they should get a 2nd chance? Where’s Brianna’s 2nd chance?
@PCDelorian6 ай бұрын
@@cortneyrichardson8553 That's why they are getting life sentences. I can understand your point, but the purpose of the criminal justice system is supposed to be justice not vengeance. What happened to Brianna is awful but its not going to be undone by ruining their lives, punishing them is of course necessary but 20 years is longer than they can currently comprehend and it would make no meaningfully different impact to increase it. And yes, because their children they deserve a second chance, people do dumb shit when their kids, and whilst most don't go far as murder, committing childhood crime is not at all uncommon, we understand this and accordingly give them lesser sentences than adults with fully formed brains. They are not getting a guaranteed second chance, they are getting the chance to maybe one day leave the confines of the prison whilst remaining under restrictive conditions where they may be returned without notice nor trial.

The judge took it all on board with an excellent summary in this brutal murder, there are no excuses they had tried to kill her with poison but succeeded in the most horrific way. She wasn’t even the only one on their kill list. These are two very dangerous people and I’m not sure I would ever want them released but unfortunately because of their ages they will be on the streets in the future. I’m not even sure people with this mind set can change or be helped. My thoughts and prayers go out to Brianna’s parents and family. Let people be who they want to be until we stop judging and society changes this will happen again as it has in the past. So sad.

Anything you say can and will be used in evidence against you, not for you! I loved the way the judge spun their attempts to get a lesser sentence by claiming some kind of diminished responsibility due to a mental impairment by using their own seemingly measured and considered reason for not showing remorse against them, very clever and quite right. However this does also serve as a reminder that when arrested wether you are innocent or not "no comment" is the only words you should utter.

It's not a standard 20 year sentence where you get out after doing half (so out in 10 years), this is a minimum sentence of 20 and 22 years. They will have to be in prison for this minimum amount of time but potentially longer. For instance if after 22 years it is deemed scarlet is still a danger to public she will be kept inside until she is deemed to be no danger to society.

In my old law practice we had a lot of dealings with this Judge when she worked in Exchange Chambers in Liverpool. A very nice lady. I often wonder how cases such as this one affect these Judges themselves. I know they have a job to do but it must be awful at times when they are restricted by laws when it comes to sentencing.

@user-hj4vw5kf5h The parents of the girl I've heard are beyond mortified, and completely support the sentencing and have reached out to Brianna's parents to apologise profusely (Brianna's parents were apparently really gracious towards them, which I can't imagine how difficult that would be) I've not heard anything about the boy's family.
@stephanie68518 ай бұрын
why do people say rubbish like this, how have we not worked out that monsters breed monsters yet. The parents probably don't give a damn. Abusers tend to groom their kids to either become abusers or victims of abusers. There is too much pity for parents who raise psychopaths
