According to original Illiad, Menelaos wasn't killed by Hektor. At end of the war Menelaos found Helen and took her back to home. He died some time later in Sparta after that Helen was exiled.

Did you notice that the Troyan general, Glaucus, is James Cosmo who played Brendan Gleeson's father in Braveheart? This time they're on opposing sides.

Film error: Paris loses his shield at 0:43 but when you next see him, he's got it again. Still, a well-done fight. They did a great job of portraying Paris as badly out of his league (which he was). Too bad he didn't get killed - that'd teach him to mess with other guys' wives!

Paris was a great fighter too! Just... Menelaos was King of Spartans! And a King in Sparta, was raised same way and same tough life as every other Spartan, knowing only how to fight, after they are taken from their homes, from 7 year old till they die! That was their life. Completely normal to win.

@koveras13 if you read the actual legend in The Illiad, it is mentioned like a hundred times that Paris is a coward. His arrow that killed Achilles was guided by Apollo because Achilles sacked Apollo's temple. Paris also shot his arrow when Achilles had his back turned. All you people who gave this guy thumbs up don't know anything.

Menelaus never died in the Trojan war according to the true story. Also, he wasn't an ugly bastard, he is described as a handsome young man and a great warrior.
@fuzzykins94

Actually he did. He found about his weak point, his heel, and shot him there with a poisoned arrow. The Greeks then adopted this strategy and Paris was killed by a poisoned arrow himself. It isn't stated how he discovered his weak point however.

@Lhein33 Menelaus and his people were called Acheans greeks in the illiad who ruled over Lacedaemon which were the Spartans. That is just in the greek account, but in actuality it was really the tribe of Dan or tuaatha de Danaan which left their mark everywhere they went (denmark, macedon, scandinavia) waring among there other settlement Troy.It was the dorians who settled in argos around 1100-1200 they were not myceaneans.

@xristodoiiaspis That is what I meant. That the movie is wrong! Ajax defeated twice Hector and Hector fled from battle as both times he lost. Actually he suicided when he understood what he was gonna do. Because he did not take the armor, he became crazy and wanted to kill all Greek kings. Athena blinded him and he killed sheeps instead. After that when he came back to normal and understood what he would do, he saw he was becoming crazy and he suicided.

even in the myth Paris killed Achilles (his arrow was guided by some god straight int achilles' weak spot, i forget which god) , also he was supposedly a stronger warrior than his brother , but after falling for Helen his warrior skills seem to have greatly diminished this also happens in the myth

It seems out of character for Hector to step in and kill Menelaos especially when the duel was agreed and executed as per the rules. I'm thinking Hector would have been good enough to disarm him instead and then he could have ordered Menalaos to go back to his army line and prepare for war....then butcher him while in the war :)

while I will say he cries a bit much, there is technically a very painful vein in that portion of the leg. This is where biology classes come in: I do not remember what its called, but it hurts, and thus people aim for it a lot. My grandpa got hit there in WWII, and he cried louder than Paris. And my last comment was directed at when Paris shot Achilles in the heel, not at this fight. Just fyi

why is everyone so upset about Agamemnon and Menelaus being killed? I know its not what happened in the Iliad but that generally happens in movies. Still I don't know why people look up to guys like Menelaus or Agamemnon. THESE GUYS ARE NOT HEROES PEOPLE!!! They're cold blooded killers who murdered innocent men, women, and children for power and glory. I don't understand why people would idolize these poor excuses for human beings.

@TortugaBreen I was actually referring to the movie and not the myth but I have to say that they still weren't that great of men. Agamemnon didn't really care about Menelaus's wife. He only wanted to sack Troy and claim it as his own and he killed many innocent people to do it. He didn't fight for love or defense of his country but for greed and power. That alone makes him a poor excuse for a man.

He killed from behind, after Afrodite revealed the secret of his weakness. And for God;sake no, he was not stronger than Hector! Hector was their hero and half-God! (In the Myth, it is said, as much of Priamos, as of Apollo). Afrodite, Athena and Artemis, had a competition for the most beautiful Goddess. The judge would be Paris and had to give a golden apple to the winner. Afrodite, in order to chose her, promised him that she would reveal the secret, to kill Achilles.

@aminoacid1648856 Of course Menelaus was a good fighter (both in the film and in the Iliad), but he has little to do with Spartans of the classical era, whom we have in mind when we say "Spartans" (Leonidas, 300 etc). Menelaus and the Spartans of Homer were Mycaenean, like the people of Argos, Pylos etc.

Menelaus is a KING.He respects Troy and wants peace. As a thank U,a prince STEALS his wife ! The same prince challenge him to a fight to the death. and heheehe, that same prince is a disgrace to men all over.... It sucks that M is killed so early, not because of the illiad, but because Brendan Gleeson does such a good job. Still, Menelaus is important in Troy,he´s the one who shows us what a heartless pussyboy Paris is! "Is THIS what you left me fooorr?" Heehe Love that.

@streakz1231 Your theories are a bit complicated. Of course the Spartans of the Trojan war were not Dorians (the name Dorians itself doesn't exist in the Iliad), that's the most common theory. About the other things you say I think there are serious problems. Who said that the jewish tribe of Dan is the same with the greek tribe of Dorians? The letter D which they share is the only common thing they have. :) Tuatha de Danann were from the medieval ages, nothing to do with antiquity, Sparta etc

If you want me to write more properly english, I would suggest you do the same. I think an epic was written for the war, is more real than anything else there is not a clue how it happened. You take always the most reliable facts you have. And the movie anyway is supposed to be based on the movie, so it is assaulting changing the whole story. Same goes of course for every Greek/Roman/etc. movie made and completely changed the story. I do not respect the non-respectful things.
