When you cut green-stemmed beans with your Gleaner, I'd recommend running the rotor in the high range. When we had an S-series Gleaner, the book said to run the rotor in the low range and it was constantly slugging. We got tired of it and started running in the high range and got along great. We were able to adjust to where grain quality didn't suffer and the machine performed great. In the off chance we would slug the rotor with it in high range, we simply opened the concave all the way, opened the stone trap, put the rotor in low range, and it would push it through. Good luck!

Ryegrass is a major crop on the farm.down here in New Zealand. It is cut green usually at xmas. Pick a wet day as it stops the tops from shattering. Left in windows for between a week to 10 days and picked up two windows at a time. We only have old 18 ft headers. Danger for us is wind. Can blow seed right out of the head. Manage around 2000lbs acre. Last year pulled in around 170.tons and dressed down with 12% losses. We had rain and nasty wind on windows that spoilt a brilliant crop back to a good harvest result. Bonus for us is the hay we bale afterwards. The ryegrass is left to come away again. Either cut for ballage or left to fatten lambs.

A few years back we literally spread wheat on a field with a fertilizer spreader about the third week of September. Had planned on working it under, but it turned into a really wet fall, and we couldn't get much wheat planted, so we just left it. Never turbo tilled it, just spread it on, and got 110 bushels off that field the next year.

Not trying to be picky but that is what we call field rye or cover crop rye. Ryegrass is what we plant for a lawn MFarmer discussed that in one of his podcasts. Ryegrass is considered a weed in my neck of the woods not a cover crop.

I wouldn't say that is "rye grass". That refers to Italian rye grass which is quite different than the "winter cereal rye" or just "rye" that you have there.
@jacoblandis45353 жыл бұрын
That was my thought too. Cereal rye, not ARG...
@donmaloney62263 жыл бұрын
I thought when they opened up the pod it was the fine seed of rye grass not the thicker seed of cereal rye.
@jacoblandis45353 жыл бұрын
@@donmaloney6226 I looked at it again. Around 1:19. Definitely bearded heads like cereal rye. If it is an annual rye grass it's not a variety I'm familiar with. I'm starting to figure out that calling "cereal rye" "rye grass" is a regional thing. Which gets confusing because I'd use those different cover crops in very different situations/rotations.
@donmaloney62263 жыл бұрын
@@jacoblandis4535 I agree with the beard observation. But are Cereal Rye grains not the size of Barley or Wheat grains. What Brian's dad opened up looked like a "grass" seed.
