It's pretty tough to plan 10 years out, especially in a down market. You have to keep in mind that bin life can exceed 20 years or more, so a 10 year plan is never enough. Best way to think is what you can afford half of in a down market, and finance the other half for a 5 year note. But you have to do the numbers that work for you. 👍👍

I've hauled out of a lot of places and I would put it directly above the pit. If you overload a truck it's easy to dump some back off and it makes blending a breeze.

Add height to your 48 ft bin if your foundation will handle it. We did it with smaller bins and saved a bunch of money.

I am about your Dad's age and started sweeping out bins in 1964 when my grandfather put up some of the first in our area, 2 10,000 bu. with bin dryer, and a 3rd bin a few years later. The only regret with bins over the years has been underbuilding the grain systems. I would wonder about using the older system for beans (if that is practical) and maybe for overflow corn storage, even if it meant hauling dry corn from the newer system to fill leftover space in the old bins. Drying floors are a big help for longer term storage, and for drying or rehydrating beans. That is a smaller investment, especially if you can do some of the work yourself. An overhead bin is wonderful, but yes it is expensive and may be hard to justify with current prices and what might be happening in the next few years. Good luck, it is enjoyable to listen to your thoughts on future plans.
@mikewilliams4297Күн бұрын
I worked at a small Grain Elevator afterI graduated high school. We had overhead gravity fed over our pit very handy loading,and blending. Our pit building was open to the east and west that helped shield us from the cold northerly winds in the winter. It’s hard to think of everything but I sure you’re viewers will help give you some good insight for your project. God Bless the Browns.

We decided to hold off on ANY investments for the foreseeable future. The renewed talk of tariffs as well as subsidies possibly going away is making any type of planning difficult. Non-farmers have no idea how difficult it is to see the future - you put seed in the ground with no idea what the markets will do
@TractorgalКүн бұрын
We are doing exactly the same. There is too much scary talk from some of the ones chosen as incoming that have no idea what we go through. Just because you are a billionaire, doesn’t mean you understand American agriculture… 😮
@Wyomingfarmer28 минут бұрын
Grain storage if it can be done financially is probably a good way to go, if markets go where we think they're gonna go
@toyfarmer70Күн бұрын
You could build another hoop barn. The same size as what you have with 4' walls would hold 35000 bu. Use lime to pack for the floor keeps it cheaper. Use it for cold storage when not using for grain.
@robertverhulst438Күн бұрын
After reviewing several years of yield maps, we decided to do more field tiling this past fall. We feel we will get just as good a return on that right now. After all, if you can't grow it, you don't need to worry about storing it. Our on-farm storage almost matches up with our production at this time, but we do hope the tiling will make it so we will add more storage.

Thanks for the video Brian. Thanks for going over future plans for your bin systems. Cost is always a consideration and having land space is the other consideration. Not easy to put a bin here and there if they don’t work together. Was an interesting discussion Brian. Was wondering if I could ask a question. You and dad seem to work on the future plans and your brother seems not to be in the discussion. He prefers it that way??????? Thanks Brian. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

So why not get a bin like welker and mike have for their fert bins for now and use it as a surge bin to have then you can still put the big bin in later. Since you have to tear the floor apart in the old place why not put in like a conveyor and then dig a big ol sump somewhere for all the water to go so you can more easily pump it out.

What I can’t get over is how farmers look at spending money. They see towering monuments to their hard work. I see it as my money being sucked away by others. You do have to spend money, no doubt, but it requires very unemotional analytical skills. Whatever you build is going to be outdated or your needs and wants will completely change in 15 years. I did not have bins for a LONG time. I ag bagged. When I did start putting systems in, I either paid cash for them, or had the cash and used a USDA low interest loan program.

With so many farms putting up bins do you think that one day that ROI will be harder to reach? Maybe not even in our lifetimes. As in, nearly every farm being able to store grain and removing the highs and lows from harvest time because there wouldn’t be such a dump on the market at once? Non farmer asking for my own curiosity.
@alanb9337Күн бұрын
If any money is to be spent it might only be in the direction that at least maintains the quality of the stored product and for the safety of the sites. Such as the circular stairs for the wet bin at the new site (and maybe a laser level system). Pumping in resin/ foam (if that is the appropriate technique) for the under-mined areas (at the old site) with the best concrete repairer you can find. Maybe digital onboard truck scales with a connection to a mobile phone app for at least one truck/ semi-trailer. Brazil has 116 million acres of soybeans in the ground. (report 31st December, 2024). Diversification ideas? Miniature F1 Wagyus?
