@RepairGeek Thank you so much for this testing. Please do more popular additives in the future, especially the ones that are widely accessible. It would also be great if the detergent / deposit control performance. Anti gel performance you guys could probably test yourself "project farm" style. I will help and send a couple of bucks your way if you do. I wouldn't mind a crowd fund either for more testing, where every dollar spend gives you a vote of what product to test next. Have the consumers unite. This info is so hard to get.

Great video, gentlemen! As the original founder and chief formulator of Opti-Lube XPD (in collaboration with Lubrizol), I’d like to share a bit of history. When we developed XPD during the early years of the ultra-low sulfur fuel mandate, our goal was a truly multi-functional additive-enhancing lubricity, boosting cetane, cleaning injectors, preventing gelling, and mitigating water contamination. It’s great to see it remain top-tier nearly 20 years later, the current owners of the company are obviously doing a great job. Interestingly, many users reported improved fuel economy with both XPD and the Summer Blend, a benefit also noted by Diesel Power Magazine in ~2008. This offsets some of the cost of the product. Perhaps future tests could explore these advantages further. Thanks for the excellent content-yours and Lake’s videos are always a pleasure to watch!

Thanks for providing some of the backstory on Opti Lube. I live in Ohio, where the temperature can swing by 50 degrees in 3 days time. That makes it hard to get repeatable results doing an MPG test. You need an extraordinarily large sample size to get good data, typically months to account for the weather and traffic. Now multiply that time by 5 additives and a control with no additives and you're talking literal years of work and documentation for somebody like me with without a dyno cell where I could run an engine at a fixed load for a set amount of time. I'm sure with a dyno you could get a result in a few hours for each product. Yes things like gelling, detergents, and water contamination could have also been tested, the issue is really financial. What was done for 1 product would have to be done for the other 4 and a control. So adding all those tests would have this video COMPLETELY upside down financially for all involved. I'm sure you're aware of what testing like this costs. I would have liked to have done more but, we simply don't have the resources. Thanks for the kick ass product that helps keep our stuff alive!
@outwestjim29 күн бұрын
@@RepairGeek Totally understand about the rabbit hole of testing! You're right about the challenges of fuel economy testing, so many variables. My thought is if a fuel additive offers at least some improvement in MPG, it would help offset some of the investment in a premium product. Thanks again for providing such great content!

When I drove a diesel, I bought a case of long-neck glass bottles (hot sauce bottles) that were about the size of the treat rate for a regular fill-up, and I kept those pre-filled with fuel treatment in the trunk. So when I got to the fuel pump, I just opened one of those bottles, dumped its content into the tank, and then filled up with diesel. I had 24 of those bottles, which was good for almost 6 months. Much less messy than trying to deal with those giant bottles, and much cheaper than buying smaller bottles of fuel treatment

Thanks to Bill Hewitt I started using Archoil in my RV which has the 3.0 liter turbo diesel Mercedes engine. It had 38k miles on it when I bought it. The first tankful (26 gallon fuel tank) or so the engine smoothed out and quieted down. Mileage improved about 1 mpg. I have been using it now for over 7000 miles and have had zero problems with operation and plan to continue using it and the fuel system cleaner ( every 5 k miles). I also change my oil, Mercedes recommended Mobil 1 5w-30 ESP every 5000 miles (Mercedes recommends every 20k miles, but that’s insane). It’s the little engine that could now hauling an 11000 lb. I was a fleet manager in California in the mid 90’s when they mandated low sulphur CARB diesel. Out of 50 delivery and line diesel trucks of varying age, we lost 20 fuel pumps due to the low sulphur lack of lubrication within the first year. Modern fuel pumps are designed to properly lubricate with less sulphur but those older trucks took a real beating. Of course, California air resource board denied any wrongdoing even though it cost California based operators millions of dollars. Based on that experience, I’ve use Diesel Kleen in my personal Duramax 2500HD just to be safe.

I had done about a years worth of research before I was in the position to actually pull the trigger on my tractor purchase. All the Kubota forums recommended HSS EDT and I have been running it from day 1 when I dumped it on top of the full tank on the day of delivery. I don’t know if it’s made much of a difference but so far I’m impressed with the fuel efficiency and finally have gone through my first regen at 46 hours. Same story for my truck, since the day it hit my driveway I’ve been using HSS. The XDP stuff sounds pretty impressive! If it was cheaper I’d be all over it. My truck doesn’t have a CP4 pump or a DPF so it seems like it would mostly be money down the drain on that vehicle for me. Considering my HEUI injectors it would probably benefit me more to put that extra money into quality oil changes more frequently. I might consider it for my tractor because it doesn’t use up that much fuel and a single jug of that would last me a pretty long time! Thanks for the video and the useful information brother!

Over the years I've used all 3 of the middle products (Hot Shot's EDT, PS Diesel Kleen, Archoil AR6500), currently I'm running PS Diesel Kleen (1000:1 in the Archoil bottle for easy dosing). Keeping things clean and well-lubricated is the top priority but a lot of folks don't realize how important having sufficient cetane is. These HPCR diesels should be nice and quiet, if they sound like an old MB 240D when you start from a stop then you really need to start using a fuel additive to boost cetane because that is NOT good for the engine. The Duramax engines (2.8 and 6.6) have been suffering from cracked pistons for many years and I've speculated for some time that, aside from a bad aftermarket tune, these failures are due to low cetane knock over time causing fatigue and eventual fracturing of one or more pistons. Here's why I think that. The Duramax (and likely other) pistons are oil-cooled via an oil squirter that shoots oil into a hole on the bottom side of the piston and then the oil comes out the other side. The oil gallery runs parallel to the wrist pin between the piston bowl/face and the wrist pin. The piston face is thinnest at the bottom of the bowl right above the oil gallery and this is where every. single. piston. fractures, most times leaving a jagged hole where the thin piece of piston cracked and caused the engine failure. Upon removing the head it's not uncommon to see cracks forming in other pistons as well. A lot of folks as well as dealer techs, without any testing, claimed "injector failure" caused the holes but that's not the case. That was a false assumption due to laziness/lack of proper RCA. Which brings us back to cetane. If you're running a low-cetane fuel and hearing injection knock (and thinking that's what a diesel is supposed to sound like) then you're not doing your engine any favors, that knock/rattle is hammering your pistons. If you own a Duramax like I do then you should be running a quality fuel additive every fill-up. Not only will your HPFP thank you but you could very well end up preventing engine failure due to cracked pistons.

Good video, good channel! Not sure if you're familiar with Daves Auto Center KZbin channel, but he just had a customer with a 6.7 Powerstroke that had 900K on it before a lifer failed and wiped out the camshaft. There are actually two videos that he put out on it, one showing the original CP4 pump with virtually zero wear and the second showed the engine being torn down and inspected, also showing virtually zero wear. The customer was religious on maintenance and fuel additives, he also used an oil filtering system (can't remember the brand) and the results are amazing. It's all about the maintenance with engines, diesel or gas.

By the way, I liked and subscribed and used your link to purchase a gallon of XPD. I had been using Hotshot EDT for the last year in my 4 year old Wrangler. The fuel pump was replaced on a recall last year and I thought I should try to make the new one last. I did not have any trouble with the original CP4 pump in over 30,000 miles of use. I saw a video on KZbin where a CP4 lasted 900,000 miles on a guys long haul truck and he used an additive plus he changed his fuel filter at every 10,000 mile oil change. The engine was being rebuilt so they tore the CP4 apart to look at wear. The other reason I decided to buy the additive was fuel economy. I could tell a slight difference of maybe 1 to 2 mpg on my 3.0 L EcoDiesel. I am getting 23 mpg over the course of a year with 14,000 miles highway, city and off road driving. It will be interesting to see if an increase in cetane with XPD vs Hotshot will improve my fuel economy another 1 or 2 mpg in 2025. The gallon of XPD should last me almost the entire year. So, $100 for a year isn't too bad. Thank you for this information.

I bought a used 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Duramax in mid-2024. Aftermarket wheels and tires, Cognito leveling kit, and S&B Cold air. Otherwise stock, as far as I can tell. My first Diesel since a 52 hp VW Rabbit in the late ‘80s. Fuel mileage was surprisingly bad - below 14 mpg in 2/3-highway 1/3 city average driving. Based on a this video, I ordered a case of 24 - 4 oz. bottles of XPD All-In-One direct from Opti-Lube. Apparently many others had done the exact same thing, as I got nice informative emails that my order would take a little time, but my product still arrived more quickly than expected. That’s excellent service number one. Opti-Lube both 1) kept me informed; and 2) delivered exactly what they said they would, or better. The product itself, however, performed beyond all possible expectations! The video documented reduced wear characteristics. What surprised me was the increased fuel mileage. Almost 2 mpg average fuel mileage improvement. This stuff is fantastic! Calculating the extra miles vs. the extra cost of the additive, the XPD Red has reduced my direct fuel cost by 8%. That’s excellent service number two. This product works! This product works beyond all expectation! It would be hard to over-compliment XPD. I cannot remember being this impressed with a technical product. I am extremely satisfied.

It's more money, but if it protects an expensive engine, and keeps it going, then it's a no brainer. As you pointed out, it's money well spent. A guy can buy a lot of Opti Lube for a fraction of the price of a new injection pump, or worse, a new engine. I still have a few bottles of Power Service Kleen. I wouldn't want to take a chance and mix the two products, probably best to use them separately. Thank You!👍

Hi, I am based in UK, common diesel problems here are frequent interrupted dpf regen cycles, diluted oil as a consequence, long oil service intervals which maybe responsible for worn out cam chains. Archoil, oilsyn and other additives addressed this for me by eliminating dpf regen cycles and saving my oil. The soot reduction and side effective of improved mpg is the main effect of the additive. I have also used the archoil catalyst additive to similar effect. I love you oil videos which align with my experience. A high reving track engine that killed Mobil 1 led me to think pao based oils that resulted in the engine revving more sweetly and negligible wear. I had similar experience with a two stroke kart engine. I have also used synthetic two stroke oil, designed for fresh water boat two strokes as a diesel Lubricant additive. It burns completely and smokelessly and hopefully help lubricate the fuel system.

I also use Oilsyn and I swear by it. I go for increased mpg and use Hybrogen. That stuff is incredible. You can actually tell the difference in idle engine with and without it. I've been using archoil for around 60k miles I think? I run the heavier cleaner every 3rd oil change or so. Injection pump is quite a bit calmer with it vs without, and my mpg is solid, but not a signifier since my truck is very bad aerodynamically. Regens are still exactly in spec with over 100k miles on it too. Best thing about archoil is buying with a discount code, and in bulk. Costs around 7c per gallon doing that. Got a free small bottle I gave to my dad for his riding mower and tractor and those machines run way better with it. I know it's off topic but for any of you guys running diesel trucks/suv's/cars with emissions on them, get an amsoil bypass oil filter kit for it. It's expensive and will sometimes not have a vehicle specific kit for it, but it filters down to 2 microns. On my small diesel I can run their 90 series for 2 oil changes (draining it each change). Oil is still ink black but I still have almost no blowby compared to the vast majority of owners since it helps prevent carbon seizing of the rings. Other benefit is less significant wear particles circulating in the engine meaning your bearings and cam's won't gunk up if you stay on top of your oil changes.

I mean in Europe, if you have a modern-ish diesel (with DPF), you NEED premium or you NEED additives. The regular diesel will gunk up everything. Been there. Premium diesel is also better in lower temps, it won't jelly up as soon as regular diesel. - It messes up the fuel system and you will have some intermittent loss of power. - It messes with the DPF/regen, it clogged up my fifth injector multiple times. - It left us stranded before. - Managed to clog up a new TDCi DPF filter under 7k miles. I was using premium when I bought my car (used). No issues, it worked like a dream. At some point I figured I won't waste money on it and swapped to regular. It caused me months of headache, because I would never think it was the fuel. Once I went back to premium again, 0 issues. What's my takeaway? - Buying a modern diesel is just headache. Let's not even get into DEF fluid, even the DPF is horrible. Why did I buy it then? Because they said my car is "compliant". Well, it was, for like 2 weeks. Then they decided Euro 6 is the new requirement. Then they decided its like Euro 6 and whatever. - If I could go back, I'd just buy a pre-DPF car and just use regular diesel. No need to worry about anything, just drive. Maybe swap injectors every 200k miles and that's it.

@@V8Lenny Germany, Austria, France, etc. It's either marked as Premium, or it has its own name like "Shell V-Power Diesel". It's "just" higher cetane than regular. But modern diesel needs it. As I mentioned, we got stuck once before due to fuel. Thankfully the weather got warmed and we managed to put some premium on top but even then we needed dealer tools to clear codes. It sucked.

Here is another question. Do you think running diesel additives will effect or "clog" the adjusting turbo fins in a diesel truck with a variable adjusting turbo blade turbo like the Rams Cummins 6.7? It's the opposite. More cetane = less soot and therefore less clogs. I do a LOT of towing with a deleted truck, adding an additive really reduces the soot on the back of the truck. I add 1/4 litre of cheap, low ash 2 stroke mineral oil (not synthetic) for air cooled 2 strokes to every 3rd fill up, never had an injector or fuel pump issue. I have 500,000 kms on a 08 lexus 2.2 diesel, also my emmissions (c02 and particulates) are very low. I reckon it's good for the piston rings too.

@rowancockburn6156 I added every fill up. I drove 150 000km with low smoke 2 stroke oil with 0 issues with engine or DPF. Dilution ratio 200:1. When I sold the w204, it was driven 300 000km. Highly recommend it.

Great job coordinating this collab with Lake. Keep up the good content and useful information. I’ve been using Hotshot (performance dose) for several years on my trucks and have noted smoother running trucks with notable improvement to fuel mileage and reduced regenerations on the DPF. The dosage per the amount of fuel it treats definitely has an impact on the numbers your independent testing identified. I image the hotshot EDT would’ve performed a lot better with the performance dose considering how concentrated it is. I’m not claiming it’s superior to the others, but it’s worth noting that 2oz of EDT goes a lot farther to improving fuel quality vs the others. It’s cool to see proof behind some of these claims these products advertise. Seems like the lubricity improvement per dose of treatment goes to the Archoil. I just can’t see myself buying the high dose treatment stuff and having to constantly dump +8oz of treatment each fill up. The concentrated doses like hotshot or Archoil are way more convenient. Maybe the performance does of EDT would’ve gotten close to matching Archoil even? Who knows, either way, thank you!
