Touring A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR Landscaping Company's HQ! ► Troy Clogg Landscape Associates

Today we have a special video for you guys, this one touring Troy Clogg & Associates headquarters located 5 minutes down the road from where I grew up. Troy Clogg has been in the industry for more than 40 years and has grown one of the largest landscaping and snow removal companies in the industry.
I asked selfishly if we could do a walk through of Troy's new Milford/Wixom location and he said absolutely, opened his doors wide open, and let us take a sneak peak behind this massive operation.
Troy has been a mentor and friend to so many behind the scenes, and his passion for the industry and helping the new contractor even to this day is incredible. Troy and I had a conversation for an hour before hand and I will tell you guys straight up, he's the real deal and one of the most helpful people I've ever met.

yeap,.....first truck I bought to get the business going was a brand new 1987 GMC K2500 4x4, 350 4 bolt main, 4.10 posi front and rear, snow plow prep package, heavy duty coolers, trailering package, etc......best truck ever and I've had 28 new ones over the years....$15,700.00 out the door...comparable truck today will cost about $65,000.00, and so we got 100.00/hr/plow truck then....we still only get 100.00/hr/plow truck now!...what happened?LOL....

I agree with Troy 100%. Us as an industry need to set an industry standard when it comes to prices.. We can only do this for so long before we just simply can't do it physically so we need to make as much as we possibly can before that time comes.. I also agree that paying employees what they're worth and that's one of the reasons it's hard to find good employees because the industry pricing is so cut throat that we can only afford to pay them pennies.. That was a great video Brian and I can't wait for the podcast with Troy..

Since 2014 when i met my wife and my brother wasn't able, we opened jrb landscaping&snowplowing. I don't plan on getting this big, but aim high so when you fail you still exceeded most. In the Detroit metro area there have been many "big player type" landscape/snow contractors, a few have fallen by the wayside, some remain and have a complete different nich'e than what the small scale maintenance companies compete for...large property management companies is where Troy Clogg cleans up in a way that no small scale outfit could handle. Companies like BriLar (formerly B & L Landscape) made their way utilizing municipal/state/county contracts for roadside/highway maintenance. Detroit Public Schools when they went to privatized contract services.....Brilar pulled together a pool of smaller sub-contractors to handle all 270 Detroit schools summer/winter services.....I was 2nd in command of the 3 man crew that mowed lawns, lol back when Brilar, (B & L) first came into existence then it all took off with the I-696 connector in Southfield, Mi. we did all the necessary landscape maintenance work for that project as it was being built in the 80's...taking advantage of opportunity when it presents itself, is where most fail.....realizing that the big contract is a full time commitment of epic proportion...is what stalls most people in going over the top! Troy has never been bashful about what he "believes" he or his employees can do....you must have this "belief x 10" in your DNA if you plan to succeed in the "large scale" landscape contractor scene.....

What a great guy and thank you for the the tour. Great advice on pricing yourself appropriately- I'm a homeowner not involved in the business and I'm willing to pay higher prices to companies who run real businesses. That means good equipment, have insurance, pay taxes, have good employee benefits etc. Not everyone is looking for the cheapest price.

He corrected you and said hes seen a lot but he hasn't seen it all and anything he hasn't seen is probalby a bad thing. The next week, we closed down travel with China and the stock market began its crash, and italy and then new york acquired a plague. little did he know he would be shut down half the spring or more completely. Troy knows how tough this business is and what dramatic stress it puts upon you. He has learned to be a little paranoid in this business and its a tough tough tough business. There's a happy spot for every guy, for some of them 250k size business is good, and some 1 million is enough.

Your scenario was me until about 16 years ago....always work work work. Pictures of events my wife took the kids to....I wasn't in them. I started taking the time to make school events, games,holidays,and the such.. Was it hard sometimes?......Yes! Do I regret it?.....Hell no!. I'm 56 now...2 kids out of college....2 still in college:. I feel good!. When the time comes to meet your maker, you won't be saying " I wish I would have worked more". Good luck my friend !

So long as I drive a truck and work late hours, he'll never have a father now. Bryan Fullerton was one of the first guys I ran across. Then Jonathan Christian and Jason Creel, followed by a dozen others since last summer. I am thankful to God for what he is giving me in the Lawn Care community. My motivation is a little boy. You guys are great.

My kids are 20,22,24,and 25 now..3girls,1boy. All I want when I'm gone is for them to remember and say I was a good father. In the end, that's all that really matters. Brian, so I have a question do most hoa”s only use one landscaper for the community of let’s say 300 homes if the hoa fee includes that the hoa takes care of the lawns? Or do they hire out a few different companies and split the work load? Anybody can sure if a small landscape company can go in and bid for homes. Thanks I understand when it’s owner responsiblity they hire whoever but my main question is getting into working for the hoa or property management etc etc
