There is a reason why Ryan throws that left hook the way he does. You must take into an account the set up before it is thrown. The reason it is so successful is because it’s not a normal hook that fighters are used to seeing, that small adjustment to the hook makes a huge difference. Ryan sticks out the left hand to measure distance and then rips the hook super wide from a very measured distance and boom!

You are misunderstanding the first two 'hooks'. The reason Garcia's torso is a little ahead of the punch is because Garcia is moving toward Haney while he throws the punch. One reason to do that is to get a left hook on Haney from a distance Haney thought was safe while Haney is in the shell. You would never do this with a tradition hook (which is almost exclusively torsional) because Haney's shell would allow him to roll and come over with the right hand as a counter. But Garcia moves from distance to throw a hybrid hook & his footwork is almost like a jab...another part of the reason is defensive. If Garcia doesn't connect with the hybrid hook he intends to step across Haney's body with Garcia's left foot, bend at the waist, and extend his butt into haney's beltline as Garcia retreats. This keeps Garcia away from Haney's counter right. So it's not a faulty punch. It's Garcia finding a way to get his left hook onto Haney from distance but still have a solid defensive option if the punch doesn't land. Don't change anything! If Ryan steps in to throw a traditional torsional left hook while Haney is in his shell, Haney will eventually buzz Garcia with an overhand right.
@MarkHuynh7
@MarkHuynh7 8 ай бұрын
Ur talking about Ryan needing to stiffen up his Left hook. I would disagree. I argue that the awkward hooks that Ryan throws is why he was able to land on someone that is by the book like Haney.

Dude! We can clearly see that First one was partially deflected by Haneys right hand. Focus on Haney's right glove, it gets to Ryan's wrist just as the punch arrives partially blocking the momentum. You can see the glove deform from the pressure. Then in the other knockdowns, it's wide open! Of course they were more effective even though he maintained the same form while delivering those left hooks. I can't believe you didn't highlight that with your pen during the first replay.😮‍💨🙈🙈🙈

Thanks for the video. In the 2000's, I could punch a heavy bag for four or five minutes continuously even though my body fat was around thirty-five percent. I was fat, but I had some aerobic strength. In 2013, I moved to an elevation of 5500 feet from being at sea level, my ability to throw continuous jab-cross combinations dropped from four to five minutes to three to four minutes. That still wasn't terrible. My health failed in 2015, and in the 2017 or 2018 period, I couldn't throw three punches without falling apart. I wasn't trying to train because I was putting all of my energy into trying to get to work, but even that failed. Around 2020, I started trying to slow the decline that had been happening for the previous five years. I went back to trying to train a little bit on a heavy bag. I've gotten to where I can throw a dozen or so punches. Obviously, I'm a shell of my former self, but a dozen is better than two or three. As part of my looking at variety in my exercise, I tried to throw palm strikes. I quickly learned that I can't throw a palm strike with my arm extended to the side. If my upper arm bone is in line with my clavicle, I'm going to feel as if my arm is falling off at the shoulder. If my upper arm bone is perpendicular to my clavicle, I can hit the bag without hurting my shoulder. I mention all of this because your video now explains what is happening. You mentioned that the pectoral muscles are stronger when the arm is facing more forward than to the side. You said that these muscles can be stronger and give the shoulder more stability in this position. My experience now makes sense. When I hold my arm to the side and try to turn into a palm strike, the pectoral muscle isn't strong enough to provide stability. When I hold my arm in front of me and turn into a palm strike, the pectoral muscle can provide shoulder stability. Thanks for this understanding.

Ryan has always had a whipping action with his hook and I think this is how he generates the power and speed. The 3rd knockdown was the best and I can’t believe that didn’t put Devin out. He was closer on the last knockdown that’s why his peck was used more and Ryan had more punch. Ryan has always thrown his punch like that. That’s why his punches are so snappy.

Better to extend the arm on the left hook, and deliver a less powerful blow, than to go for maximum power and put oneself closer to danger. There's an important trade off between offense and defense. And usually defense is more important than offense all other things being equal.

Dude. Just stop. You are wrong on pretty much every talking point. Rigidity doesn't transfer energy - it causes it to be reflected back into the puncher. The key to delivering maximum force into the target is relaxation. Furthermore, the angle of the pec does not matter whatsoever upon moment of impact. The pec is used to accelerate the punch and generate power before contact, not afterwards. Basic ballistics at play here. In fact, a muscle in its stretched state generates far more power than flexed, due to the elastic rebound effect. The axe kick in Taekwondo is a perfect example.

Of course the ideal hook is with a 90 deg arm angle, but if you want to land at longer ranges, you sacrifice some power. It’s a tradeoff. Garcia had no trouble dropping all of his opponents with that longer hook so this isn’t really an issue. In the pocket with a stronger hook, he is more susceptible to counters, and he has a tendency to keep his hands low.

Hey doc! You forgot to address Haney’s broken jaw. Mouth hanging open like that is a clear sign. Seen the same thing with Colby Covington with his fight with Kamaru Usman…

Tl;dr- if you are a pro boxer who repeatedly gets hit very hard in the head by an opponent with lightning quick hands - and you do not return the favour - there is a material risk of losing the fight 😁 ps Your videos and breadth of knowledge are absolutely superb - thank you, genuinely 🙏🏾
