The spurs imo are very clearly trying to very slowly get Wemby used to playing in the NBA. They don't care about this season at all. At 8:47 we see the perfect image- Wembanyama with Porzingis' face right in front. Porzingis was very similar to Victor, a physical freak with crazy skills. But Porzingis has struggled with constant injury and has missed entire seasons and has played more than 60 games only 3 times in his career. I don't blame the Spurs for being cautious, but I know caution can be frustrating to both players and fans.
@TiVeigaKung Жыл бұрын
I don't think they are really alike. Porzigs came to the NBA way more heavier, wasn't as athletic as Wemby and Wemby is more springy.

Sorry but this isn't a great take. Porzingis is nothing like Wembanyama. Victor is atleast 2 inches taller, with a much bigger wing span who can cut & is athletic. As someone experienced with hypermobile joints, including in the ankles (if not especially), I've found often once you roll your ankle like that that much, that it gets loose (technically MORE loose), as it's been heavily stretched out. The looser it gets, the more it will begin to roll on its own when it normally wouldn't. And if you notice this, best advice is to stop playing hard for awhile. I wound up tearing my ATFL playing a game in a non-contact fashion as my foot didn't snap back after having jumped directly into the air for a rebound. I believe a part of why and how that happened is from not giving it a rest after having rolled it multiple times. Again, when it's somewhat normal to roll ankles from hypermobility, it often has zero pain.

@@NORMANDIEmix Right or wrong they wanted Kawhi to play in pain. Kawhi said he wanted a second opinion to make sure the injury would not get worse if he played. They told him to shut up and dribble. Eventually, he ended up tearing that ligament with the Clippers two years ago and is just now playing like new. He wanted injury rest to minimize the pain and had it with Toronto. He had injury management with the Clippers. In no way were the Spurs going to give Kawhi the type of injury management that Toronto provided. They put their foot down. They went to the press with leaks to force Kawhi into playing. They used players talking in public in order to force Kawhi into playing. They wanted Kawhi to play from day one to the last day he wore a Spurs uniform. Nobody knows the exact diagnosis that the Spus came up with but that wasn't the issue. There are two sides to the dispute on the diagnosis. It was how they handled the injury that upset Kawhi.

I think they ordered a 2nd MRI because they were _really_ hoping to have enough evidence to go to the NBA and sit their star player and not get penalized for tanking. The problem for Wemby is that the Spurs need to tank the rest of the year to seal their draft pick, especially with stiff competition in the form of the Pistons and the Wizards, and there's just not much value to having Wemby on the floor at that point. Also, back-to-backs are hard on everyone, even youngsters. Whether a team is tanking or in first-place, I don't fault any coach for wanting to sit their star players for at least one game in a back-to-back, especially considering how generally compressed NBA seasons have become since they expanded the playoffs formats and added an extra week for "media day bonanzas" and such.

Kawhi was treated like a nobody from day one and was told what, when, and where to pee as a Spur. When it came to the injury it was more of the same. They call Kawhi the nephew because they can't call him a boy since that has racial undertones. The Spurs doctors made all of the calls. They used the MRI's and saw nothing according to them or brushed off things and declared him fit to play. Kawhi was in pain and did not want to play in pain. The Spurs do not like nor respect second opinions and Tony P made that perfectly clear when he said never get an opinion outside the Spurs organization because they have world renown doctors and should not be questioned. If Victor does get second opinions then there is no question that the Spurs will not like it one bit. The Spurs medical stuff misdiagnosed a lot of players. They misdiagnosed Greens torn thigh. @TavionDefense honestly have no opinion, first because I don't know next year prospects yet, and second because Iif they get 1st pick and a guard is the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft, and the top 3 are players like Banchero or Chet, they would end up picking a center or forward even if what they need is really a 2 guard. But I think if the best player in the draft is a great PG, it's the best situation for them, Devin Vassell can fill it up but he's not a very good playmaker

I think it’s a ruse. SA has to regulate his minutes because he gets so exhausted due to such poor stamina. PS: high top shoes would help protect his ankles 🤷♂️

One of the foundations of medicine is to not order a test if the result won't change patient management. The sports med team HAS to have an understanding of the natural history of these injuries and have a a reasonable clinical question to be answered by the MRI. Otherwise it's a waste of time, money, radiologist liability/license risk, and shit a waste of electricity. This is pretty typical of the rest of clinical medicine in 2024 unfortunately. Just image for imaging sake and see what happens, because "why not" -Radiologist

In this case the test can change team management, but not so much player management: If the GMS can order tests enough to find the slightest bit of evidence that Wemby has a documentable injury, that will allow them to shut Wemby down for whatever games they want through-out the season without being penalized by the NBA for tanking and sitting their star player (which the NBA now has some rules against).

@@jakestine4753 I guess it's what Brian said, there will absolutely be abnormality. That's already a given. So if they just want confirmation of what everyone already knows for some policy, then fair enough but I'll call that suboptimal medicine

With the league more strict on resting players, the spurs are using the ankle tweak as the perfect excuse to rest him, which is smart and makes perfect sense. He is not yet completely physically developed, he could basically be in ncaa, so ir makes a lot of sense to limit his minutes this year and the next.

I'm not sports physiologists, but his shoes need to have soles that are 1mm thick at most. There's just too much torque on those 8 ft legs.

Its not the Spurs its the game of basketball. Ankle sprains are the most common injury, an injury I sustained hundreds of times from middle school to college. It has nothing to do with the Spurs org its the nature of the beast.

He'd be better off being 2" shorter and 40lbs heavier. Seems like he's going to have a shorter, injury plagued career with conditioning problems, if he doesn't add strength and a little fat reserves for a 7 month sprint. Load management is crap. Everyone should get less $$$. The players and owners are screwing the fans over by crazy high tix and merc, but then dont provide the product. If Taylor Swift scheduled 80 concerts a year, but then was actually only performing at 60, utilizing a very similar sounding substitute, as she watched from back stage; would that be ok?
@Desi365 Жыл бұрын
Funny that you complain about load management but say nothing about teams mischieviously tanking. I find the latter a lot worse. Actually i don't understand how and why the fans keep buying (expensive) tickets to watch that.

It's become normal for players dealing with Injuries not to play Back 2 Back games. Khris Middleton hasn't played in a back 2 back in 2 years now. Why stress a player who's dealing with an injury by making him play 2 games in 2 days?

Or the team is terrible, they want their rookie and franchise player to be able to take it easy and take games off, and to do that without the NBA punishing the team they need something like an MRI to keep the NBA at bay.

He looked good after the ankle sprain? People have no idea what it takes to play an NBA game. Vince Carter was missing games in his late 30s and was throwing between the leg dunks in practice. „Looking good“ can deceive.
