This isn't reliably verified though. It's related to something Dana White said but White has a habit of exaggerating things or sometimes just coming up with stuff for reporters. He said that he heard that Silva's corner talked about how Silva's leg cracked in a 1st round check, but Silva's corner speaks Brazilian Portuguese and White doesn't, so it's all 2nd hand info. And the corner could have been wrong. Maybe Silva was just saying that the earlier check hurt a bit but it wasn't actually a crack.
@tzaeru
@tzaeru 4 жыл бұрын
@@seba247 You can't see the supposed crack even if you watch the fight. There's no sign whatsoever that Silva had been injured from an earlier kick.

"Many consider to be the most severe injury in the sports history" This is definitely a lesser known injury, since it was a less prolific fighter in a less prolific promotion. Lucky for Santos, it was a frontal sinus fracture and didn't actually cave his skull in. He broke the bones in front of his sinuses, rather than breaking a skull plate, so harder to say how much worse it was than a tib/fib fracture (since I'm not a doctor).

This injury ruined his career. He was already on a downturn from clowning too much with weidman and having a freak knockout loss. The rematch with the leg wrap....god. No matter how good his striking and kicking still was, his subconscious had to fight him every single step of the way for any future kicks, and that impacted his explosiveness... He was also getting older. I wish Silva would of had a better finish to his career.

As someone who has been Thai boxing since I was 12 I just wanted to say thank you for the explanation and to my knowledge you are 100% correct about conditioning. The purpose of the conditioning exercises we do is to “kill” the subsurface nerves that are between the bone and that thin layer of skin. That way when you kick or check a kick you aren’t hopping around on one foot like your grandpa after hitting his shin on the coffee table. Thumbs up doc. Keel em coming

It's very good to point out "Kick Checks". Weidman checked *every kick* Silva was throwing. If you watch the fight again it even looks like an amateur mistake. I'm not Anderson but, as a fighter, I think he was setting up a high kick and that's why he kept kicking with force. So he could eventually kick high and Weidman would try to low-check and be hit by a head kick. Count the kicks that Weidman Checked. I was surprised his leg didn't break earlier.

@@Keithustus This has happened before in other fights. I remember joking "That check is 6months of phisiotherapy". He was training only a few days before the fight and he has Muay Thai training and part of Muay Thai is shin hardening due to repetitive creation and healing of micro fractures so what probably happened was there wasn’t enough time for Silva’s micro fractures in his leg to heal and the kick was kinda the final straw
@SamsonGuest
@SamsonGuest 4 жыл бұрын
This is super speculative. It's not like every training session in muay thai has shin hardening. It's just something people who train muay thai periodical do. And I think it's quite a stretch to assume he did this very close to the actual fight. And you also do not need a microfracture too explain a fracture like this happening in these circumstances. It might aswell break without a micro fracture.

One thing that wasn't mentioned here, and I'm not very sure if it's even relevant... is the fact that, shortly after this occurred, Anderson's coach came out and said in interviews that they believe his leg may have already been weakened from a prior injury to the same area of his leg. It's probably impossible to tell if that was a significant factor at this point, but I just figured I'd put that out there.

There was a study with the shin conditioning, I was a part of it. Shins do get slightly harder, if you take a normal healthy person and just have them kick the bottom part of a punching bag after 3 months the shin can get anywhere from 5% to 15% harder

I think there’s definitely some benefit to shin conditioning. I’m no doctor, but another thing that could help is lifting weights, which has been shown to increase bone density. So do your heavy squats and deadlifts

Hey Brain I'm curious about the shin conditioning thing, so aswell people condition their knuckles and they'll have almost one solid knuckle instead of 2 separate ones. What is that and does that make their knuckles more durable? Or is it the same as the shin conditioning where it's not really that proven? Cheers!

You gotta think about the bones in your hand compared to your shinbone, are any of the bones in your hand as big or rigid as your shin bones? Human hands are very fragile and there's no significant conditioning that'll stop a badly thrown punch from breaking your hand.

Everyone always forgets about Corey Hill, who had this injury first. Then there is also Evangelista 'Cyborg' Santos who had his skull caved in. Wouldn't rank Silva's as the worst, just more infamous.

I'm surprised to hear of the lack of evidence of self induced bone remodeling/conditioning. It has to be real though to some extent, otherwise I feel like we would see this injury more often all throughout combat sports?Especially in muay thai and kick boxing. I hope there is more research done into it. I have this internal fear now of utilizing my shin for kicks after the Weidman incident, and then finding out its basically a mystery why it happened.

I'm not sure the mechanism but pretty sure shin conditioning does strengthen the bone because Muay thai fighters who practice the most low kicks and have a very powerful kicks compared to other styles of kickers don't tend to snap their legs like that.
